I'm usually a gamer who works alone most of the time. Sometimes I play co-op with friends. But when me and my friend played this game together, it gave me a hint that games like this is the reason why I play co-op games more often.

A way out is a co-op about two men try to escape and get payback on a man called Harvey for their own reasons. The two men are called Leo a family man blamed for a crime he didn't do and the other guy is called Vincent a married man expecting his first child but his crime is unknown. I thought the graphically is good as it's in a style that reminds me team fortress 2.The gameplay very easy to understand. The multiplayer aspect is good as both players don't have to have the full game as long a one of the players have the full game the other player can just has to have the free trial to play with them.

One of the best splitscreen games you can possibly play, a masterpiece in terms of story that rivals even the best movies in Hollywood. Some cluckyness in the driving and shooting, but that doesnt ruining the experience. Overall a beautiful and engaging experience, that offers one the best in this generation 9/10.

Great game with good story that will get you hooked. If u really want a story-based co-op game, this is the one.

This is one of the, if not THE, greatest co-op games I have ever played in my life. It's so perfect. Josef was not exaggerating when he said that it MUST BE 2 PLAYER. It was specifically designed that way. And olay with a close friend. It makes it all the more invigorating.

Kudos to Hazelight Studios, this team took the very forgotten co-op genre, redesigned it and took it to another level.

You must play this game with your buddy right next to you on the couch (ideally), if not online is still awesome... and get ready for an emotional rollercoaster.

Easy game, with amazing co-op gameplay, and the ending will shock u, gonna leave it at that.

Seeing split screen nowadays are rare and that's what caught peoples attention with this game. Playing with a friend at one couch brings many laughs and experience the crime saga together can be truly enjoyable, I think the game is just above mediocre but you still must play it. It's a special and new experience, the concept is new and while the story was okay the split screen made this game.

To begin with, the voice acting is kinda frustrating. It's so lame sometimes that it becomes laughable. The voice actors feel untalented and stiff. Character movement and shooting mechanics feel clunky. Gameplay wise it feels like an XB360/PS3 game with some bugs. There are some details that are small but still pretty bad like the prisoners coming into the prison with their own clothes. Or when Leo and Vincent are suppose to fill a cart with sheets and when you open it there are no sheets there at all. Or when Leo loses his parachute, parachutes cannot just go of like that. He also loses his guns and in the next clip he has it. Or Harvey telling his men to find the best hitman to kill Leo and Vincent, but that hitman can't even hit them with a gun when he's five meters from them. The story is great in the beginning, but the prison escape feels way to rushed, easy and unrealistic. Love the refrences to Shawshank though. This game opens up great but loses it in the middle. The plot is not pretty well written or thought out. The plot and cliches have been used so many times and it's kinda predictable to foresee the ending. Character development both feels good and bad but most time kind of lazy. The ending is also overused. Josef threw in so many things in this game so it felt very forced and if it's suppose to be this much stuff it should be longer.

But the story is not completely bad. It's original but we haven't seen it in a game that much and together with the gameplay it can be more interesting and fun. The story tries it best to make us empathize with Leo and Vincent by making them show feelings, their families and scenes were they talk about their lives and plans. It feels like a crime saga from the 90's and it was a long time ago I played a storydriven game like this.

Gameplay can be fun, it's very varied. Sometimes it's fast paced action, then later it's slow drama. But escaping cops, going down a torrent by boat, park core-ing through a construction site, shooting down an entire cartel and then escape with bikes. There's a lot going on and you get more than just one experience and genre.

The directing is awesome. This is were the cinematography along with the split screen plays a big role. So there's a scene in the prison were Vincent and Leo is in a fight and the camera switches between the players and makes them fight a little time each. Or when you escape trough the hospital the camera switches between the players with some satisfying camera angles and transitions. I can't come up with more examples but the directing is good as heck.

The ending is overused and predictable but the last 20 mins are still the most appreciated ones in the game. Honestly the game couldn't end in another way and that was the best way to close it. Kinda liked the sad endings.

A great cinematic game, I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's even better than the movies! Lots of detail, good graphics, great dialogue, easy to play, fun, thanks EA you did it!

Great game in general, fun to play with a friend. Good story, with creative scenes. I gave it an okay rate because I didn't like the ending. Played it twice and the ending sucked in both, would love if it had more options, that changed the story line.

But it's a great game and there's sadly nothing like it.

'A Way Out (2018)' is a cinematic, co-op only adventure that focuses on two convicts as they attempt to escape prison and settle their unfinished business. It's a great idea, an almost old-school ode to classic split-screen experiences, but it is let down by a number of issues. Firstly (and, for a game as focused on story as this, most importantly), the writing is generally quite clunky. The overall narrative is decent, if trope-laden, but the dialogue just doesn't quite feel natural. There is some decent character development, though, and the two leads are likeable enough. Secondly, the gameplay is pretty restrictive right the way through. The thing never quite decides what it wants to be. There are segments that see you wandering around semi-open areas, talking to NPCs to no real effect and playing oddly in-depth (ish) mini-games at inopportune times. There are others in which you're pushed through action set-pieces, typically just holding the left stick forward and mashing the buttons you see on screen. There are even rudimentary driving and shooting sections. Because it tries to do so much, it only ends up being somewhat effective; it's scatterbrained, to say the least. It also constantly holds your hand. It's very difficult to actually fail anything, which makes for a sort of consequence-free experience. This is true of its narrative, too; only one choice affects anything other than the scene in which it is presented. However, for all the game's flaws, it's ultimately a good experience. A lot of this is down to the fact that its ending makes a bold choice and sticks with it, easily becoming the most compelling segment of the game. What you do here really feels like it matters and it adds a layer of complexity to the otherwise straight-forward narrative. It really reinvigorates the affair just when it seems to have run out of steam. The rest of the game isn't bad, either, even though it is flawed and, even, sometimes frustrating. It's typically an enjoyable time and some of its oddities are actually pretty funny, to boot. Its central co-op conceit mitigates a lot of its issues, especially if you're playing with someone in person, and each segment is only as long as it needs to be. If it had more consistent and impactful gameplay or a truly breathtaking and nuanced story, it could have been great. As it is, it's just good. 7/10

Just played this game tonight on PS4. A friend asked if i wanted to play, and the idea of old school split screen sounded good. Unfortunately, it was quite clear from the start, that this game only gives you the illusion of a game. The "gameplay" is the major problem with this game. The only elements of the game are moving your character to the marked area and then pressing or square, x, or R2. Sometimes you have hold the button. Sometimes you must tap it. The focus of the game is co-op. But there is no real co-op aspect to the gameplay. Most of the time you push square, x or R2 independent of each other. Sometimes you must push the buttons at the same time! If you fail to do so, the game will often just wait for you. No consequences. In the few "action" scene, you have quick time events, where you have to push the right button, then the prompt comes on the screen. You have a couple of seconds to do so, so there is no challenge. If you fail (you won't, but we tried to force the game to have us fail often, just to see the reaction) you loss the progress of approx. the last 30 seconds, and start up again at the same situation. It is a game designed to give you the illusion of action and excitement, but when you realize that there is no consequences to you action, and the entire gameplay consists of, pressing/holding/tapping the button displayed on the screen, you lose the excitement. The "game" has some option throughout the scenes, to interact with the environment, be it talking to people, or using equipment or a farm or the likes. I like it when games give you a rich world, that you feel is actually inhabited with the NPC's. But unlike The Last of Us or even Undertale, these interactions bring nothing to the game. Petting a cow, doing pull ups or asking a NPC if he like cleaning I washing machine, is neither funny nor considered actual gameplay. There is a couple of minigames, where you can compete with your co-op partner, but is too little too late, and only underlines that it is an otherwise barren game. So, this is not really a game, but more of a interactive movie/story. Unfortunately, the story isn't really that compelling. A couple of guys bonds in prison, and breaks out to get revenge on the guy who got them there. Unoriginal and predictive. Perhaps i am not seeing the brilliance of the game. The game has gotten otherwise fine reviews. After playing the game, I searched for reviews that could confirm my suspiciance that this was the worst game o 2018 so far, but I couldn't find any. Reviewers seems blinded by the fake action the game tries to force on you. Therefor I found it relevant to give you another perspective of A Way Out.

This game was great fun! The only reason I've given an 8 out of 10 is that I wish it was longer! It took us a day to complete. I would have liked at least a few days of gameplay. The second reason is there were a few too many cut scenes and not enough actual gameplay.

I wish more games were made like this.

Such a gripping, coop video game; possibly the most interesting, visually striking, and thought-out coop game I've ever played. Before I get into it, I just wanna say; I absolutely love the director of this game Josef Fares; I've played all of his games so far (as of January 2022) and think each one is a damn fine masterpiece. Please keep making games Josef!!!

Anyways, I can't think of a better game designed for coop. A literal cinematic masterpiece imbedded in awesome gameplay, with a jail escape level that reminded me of scenes I've seen in prison films (for example Escape from Alcatraz). There's also plenty of cool secret interactions that adds to the discovery experience, and of course, that duel in the ending... which had me clutching.... So... damn... hard. I ended up played this all in one night with my friend, and then played it a second time in a night with my brother, each time playing as the other character. If you have any impartial interest to couch coop games, like I do, I'll give my highest recommendation to play this pronto.

Writed this review after actually finishing the game* Like Geoff Keighley said: What to expect from Joseph Fares is not necessarily the most technically advanced game or the most in-depth gameplay, you expect a tought provoking adventure with innovative gameplay, and i think he definitely go on that... And after finishing the game I noticed everything he said was true. But that doesn't mean the game is bad.

-"CoD iS bEtTer cO-oP ShOotEr than This" If you expected a shooter then you failed in life and gonna be disappointed. This game is more than "just a shooter", is actually unique, there is nothing like it, and a CoD co-op game doesn't even have a story mode, no memorable moments, no real Co-op instead of shooting and... that's it, shooting because there only is Survival mode and Multiplayer modes. I prefer having a movie like Co-op game like Uncharted, full of memorable moments and cinematic gameplay, damn the chases where the best I've played in a long time.

-"Gameplay is not in depth enough, only pressing R2 or square is not gameplay" Do not expect In-Depth gameplay with a lot of mechanics and skill trees or whatever because is not necessary, this game is meant to be accesible, to play with everyone, you little brother/sister, you girlfriend/boyfriend, your dad/mom.

-The ending, men... the ending The ending for me is one of the most impactful and hardest decision you will ever make in a videogame...believe me... the ending is very emotional and is a masterpiece. i know the story had some clichés but i expected nothing like that...

-10/10 You don't think that's too much? I'm not giving this a 10/10 just because others give it a 4 or a 1 because of not being the game they expected. And for not appreciating art. For an Indie Studio like Hazelight (EA is just the publisher/distributor or whatever) is a win, is innovative, accesible, and the story is very well writed ( just a little bit cliché). And the ending...just sells everything to me... the ending is perfect for the game.

Truly incredible had so much fun playing this brilliant game but those endings talk about heartbreaking truly wonderful the cast the writing the directing one of my favorite game's had it for quite awhile but was unable to play it..... it's a don't miss..

I think this game deserves praise in every category. It was fun, emotional, surprising, hilarious and just challenging enough to make you feel good when you solve a puzzle. 10/10 without a doubt.

I played this game with a good friend of mine and both of us. Thoroughly enjoyed. It was by far best game I have ever played. The storyline was incredible. The graphics with stunning and the game, play with smooth I couldn't fault any part of it. If you were thinking of playing this game, I would highly recommend not searching it up on apps like YouTube or TikTok this is because they can spoil some of the best bits of the game. If I were you I would just watch the advert. Although this game is rated in 18. I would say suitable for teenager audiences. If there was any game I would choose to play again as if it was the first time I have played it it would do this one. I really hope they make a sequel to this as I enjoyed every single second of this game and continue to play it with other friends of mine that have not yet played it.

This game is for absolute beginners! I mean, you're restricted to literally three buttons - triangle, R2 and Square. The game prompts 95% of your moves so there's no real exploring, it's basically just a co-op cut-scene game with a couple of triangle and square instances. There's maybe one or two good parts where you have to concentrate but the rest is just boring and non-immersive. If you want a good shooter co-op download COD lol

I really enjoyed the game. It have some interesting cooperation sequences and actions. I really enjoyed also the story with the twist at the end and i found it pretty clever and we know more stuff at the end and we have a different perspective on the characters intentions. I loved the way that we cooperate in the entire game and it changed a the end. And i found some camera movements really interesting and some 2D actions well placed. The cooperations are very great and need the actions of both and we need to communicate also. Very nice experience. I found the story, at the beginning, pretty classic and. Influenced by others TV shows. At the end the video game have his own identity. I recommend it.

Directed and scripted by Josef Fares, winner of the 2019 BAFTA for Best Multiplayer Game, A Way Out is a cinematic experience that is more like an interactive film with alternative endings than a game. Similar to games where two players are required, such as It Takes Two or Unravel Two, this work presents us with a deep and well-crafted narrative, impacting and giving rise to a bond of affection and empathy between the player and the characters. After being sentenced for crimes they didn't commit, Vincent Moretti and Leo Caruso have their fates crossed after helping each other in a prison fight, slowly establishing a bond of trust that intensifies when they discover they have the same enemy, a mobster called Harvey. It's from the moment Vincent creates an elaborate escape plan that the "real" game begins, with both players initially choosing one of the main characters to play.

With intuitive gameplay and a greater focus on visual and narrative elements, A Way Out achieves what many cooperative games fail to do: create an intense narrative and give the player the feeling that they are watching a film rather than playing a typical video game. Accompanied by a series of mini-games hidden in a detailed and rich setting, the player is allowed to deviate slightly from the "Story Mode", exploring the "false open world" that the game establishes (where the settings are minimally explorable). Although there is a lack of many elements that could enrich the gameplay (such as greater freedom to alter the characters' looks and a real open world to explore), such elements would eliminate the "interactive film" experience that the game offers. The sound ambience is superb and the development of both characters as you progress is exceptional. The need for constant co-ordination and help between the players to solve the puzzles is notorious and can lead to memorable moments during the experience for both players. In addition to the puzzles, there are also a few moments where the essence of the game comes together with the setting presented, adopting moments such as car chases in the middle of forest regions reminiscent of Uncharted or brief moments of survival that give a touch of The Forest (but without the cannibals the game is so well known for). Given the nature of the game, it's recommended not to delve too deeply into the story to avoid weakening the experience.

Even though it's a game outside my "gaming comfort zone", A Way Out was a tremendous surprise and one of the games that will go down in my list of "Best Games I Played in 2024". The graphics and sound work deserve to be applauded and the narrative in the construction of the characters of Vincent and Leo is comparable to characters in 70s thrillers (like the film Taxi Driver, for example). This brings this review to a close, giving the game a rating of 8.5/10 and leaving my recommendation to anyone looking for a game to play with a friend or loved one.
