I was considering suicide but then...
mandyinman24 October 2019
I was being evicted from my home, my husband was about to divorce me because I couldn't have children, and my mother was soon to be dead. I moved in with my sister and her husband and children, was staying downstairs on their couch. I turned this on. Apparently it was the premiere night. I cried. Of sheer joy. Because so many of these things are relatable to me. Especially the fact her was a teacher. As so was I. For 14 years. And now. I feel like as though Joe is my godsend. My spiritual husband. Thank you Joe. For giving me the strength to move on and build my life back. It's been over a year since this show premiered. And I'm still here. I have my own home again, my life is getting back to normal. And I'll always remember just how much this show and Joe helped me in that dark time. Please. Adult Swim. I bet you. Give us season 2. I've been so patient and good this year. And I'll consider it my *Pera-Sonal* ;) Christmas present if you please just give me if any just ONE more season. Please and thank you. :)

This is the first show I've ever seen that has made me physically cry of happiness
brycebucher16 June 2018
This show is one of the most real experiences that the medium has offered. There are countless scenes that, regardless of simplicity, manage to somehow make you feel more human. It is almost intangible what this show can bring to you, and no words could ever do it justice. I'ts all about the little things.

Please renew for a second season, therapy is expensive
briandsmith-357482 August 2018
This show is unlike anything I've watched. Joe Perra is an incredible actor playing a socially awkward but good hearted man that talks and acts like hes 80. The humor is dry but not cynical. Absurd but in a subtler way than most adult swim shows, strangely informative at times about topics from rocks to rat prevention, and above all, good lord, this show just soothes your soul. I have not experienced a show like this before or felt the need to leave a review. I really hope it gets another season

Wonderful Storytelling
dst-thomas5 June 2018
Joe Pera Talks with You is the new show I never knew I wanted so badly. I turn to Cartoon Network for entertaining short-duration shows, such as Mike Tyson Mysteries. They're blessedly brief and to the point, and I can watch them as a matter of convenience on my DVR. Joe Pera's schtick is a grandfatherly teacher who presents the various minutiae of life from a thoughtful perspective. My take is that if he weren't such a well-intentioned, sincere character he would be mostly rejected by "normal" society. But our hero manages to win the day while living comfortably between two worlds - the outside world where we meet life, and his inner world of perspectives, knowledge, and values. The overall mood of the show is calming, with "Joe Pera Reads You The Church Announcements" (S1E6) becoming surprisingly edgy. So I've seen 6 episodes so far, and have become a huge fan. Although each episode is self-contained enough that you can dive in, the episodes also present threads relating to themes and personal relationships that you can follow - not knowing some of them will make scenes in some episodes seem random. Thank you, Joe Pera, for talking with me.

A Wonderful Show
i_ashton21 July 2018
Set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in the town of Marquette, the viewer is invited into the daily world of a socially awkward middle school choir teacher and his local friends. Far from the worn-out & predictable sarcasm of so much television comedy, Joe's humor is subtle, dry, charming, and incredibly endearing to the point of making you want to know the character personally.

By way of each episode, Joe takes us on a journey through various topics such as: how great breakfast is, Jack-o'-lanterns attaining 1/16th of the pumpkin carver's soul & how to re-grow your soul, talking you back to sleep since you are awake so late, what it's like to hear an amazing song for the first time before you heard it played 20 billion times, and even the Rat Wars of Alberta, Canada and more!

Accompanied by a cast of fantastic characters, the show's often-humorous - and sometimes subtle - references to the odd qualities of Michigan's Upper Peninsula culture are so sharply accurate, it really makes me wonder if one of the producers of the show might have spent significant time there.

Do yourself a favor and take the time to really watch this wonderful show. You'll love it.

Never has there been a show that is so willing to risk viewer engagement to establish and maintain a unique feel and mood.

The acting, editing, sound design and music all work together very purposefully to create a self-aware experience that is very rewarding for those willing to give it a chance.

Overall there is just so much heart and personality in this show, and if you like the first five minutes then it will probably become your favourite show of all time!

I very highly recommend you watch it. It is my new favorite show. This stuff is truly breaking new territory. There is nothing quite like it. I hope this show gets the recognition it deserves. True warm and fuzzy feelings in a sometimes scary world we live in

Felt like the setup for a twist. Turned into an absurdly wholesome and enjoyably education experience
dennisforbes7 September 2020
My first experience saw this show coming on right after more traditional Adult Swim fare, so my expectation were that Joe would turn into The Joke at some point.

Thankfully that never happened.

Instead I discovered a thoroughly enjoyable, bite-sized experience of a different life. That life may be fictional, but it is entirely believable and sympathetic.

This show is staffed with extraordinary talent throughout. The writing. The cinematography. The acting. It is rare that any of it fails to deliver a result closing on perfection.

I would never have tried this show had I read the synopsis, or understood its sincerity. The premise is one that I just wouldn't believe they could deliver on. So instead I went in expecting something mean-spirited caustic, and paradoxically those low expectations brought me this wonderful show.

I can't stop watching it over again

Seriously I have a serious issue here. I've had 2 weeks off of work and I have watched at least half the series every day. Specifically episodes 2-6, but they're all amazing. This is Man's crowning achievement. And the dude is actually from Buffalo which makes him even more awesome (he has an amazing bit about the Bills on youtube).

Great change of pace TV
avdad-6164429 June 2018
This show is not only very funny, but relaxing in a way. Everyone I have shown this to loves it. The show is entertaining, and has great commentary on simple things, and this is fortified by the storyline, which makes the viewer want to keep watching as well. I will say, it is not a typical adult swim program, but it is a very calm, yet funny, show to hang out and enjoy

Does what it says on the tin

It's a show about a guy named Joe Pera talking with you during a variety of situations. A lovable guy, really. It's a different breed of Adult Swim shows that I can actually see getting viewers invested into ASMR and such. A few minor swears, but overall, a very wholesome experience. Can't recommend this enough.

A show that has no bounds. And is Heartwarming!
tinydracula19 February 2020
One of the most modest, well shot, story driven, best new things, or even old things there ever will be! I'm moved by this show and I hope Joe has shows in Tennessee soon so I can throw money at him! Since the show debut i hounded my gf to watch his show with me at first she hated it. 😂😂 but after YEARS of bugging her about it we've both watched all the episodes together and are a much happier pair for it! I can't recommend Joe Pera enough! I bought his shirt (only one shirt on sale of his I saw ) but if he made more shirts; I'd buy two of each!! Please Joe!! NEVER leave us!! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼

A warm cup of tea for the life gone haywire
connorarbiter10 December 2019
I'm not a doctor nor psychologist but I can give you my Scout's Honor Pledge™ that this show will help ease symptoms of anxiety disorder, panic disorder, possibly help with mild-to-moderate depression, and, since most dis-ease of the body stems from inflammation, which is caused by resistance, I'd be willing to bet that viewing this show in a focused and engaged way could bring about healing of the body due to the nature of it, its values presented, and the simple truths it posits.

Similar to the mission of the Stardew Valley developer who wanted to remind people of the simple, sustainable "real-ness" of a life spent farming off the land, I'd assume Joe Pera and crew are hoping this show incites a similar sense of "simple, sustainable personal wellbeing" in its viewers. In my case, it absolutely has and this show has made me laugh out loud and cry quite silently in the most healing and therapeutic of ways.

Reviewers who call it boring and unfunny aren't keen to what this show is trying to do. It teaches the frazzled, nervous-breakdown-prone modern working person how to re-approach life in ways that are so slow and simple, it's entertaining-and definitely funny. If you're not laughing or invested in the show, you're probably not the right patient for this subtle therapy.

A cure for cynicism
deeoo20 April 2022
The only thing I can compare Joe Pera with, is Bob Ross making a sitcom.

It's so pure, relaxing, minimalistic, heart warming and I love watching it before going to bed to wash the daily cynicism off.

I want to be more like Joe Pera.

Peaceful and Thoughtful

Quirky with a subtle but appreciable humor. There's a warmth about this show that is refreshing to see, especially for an Adult Swim program. It has mostly flown under the radar, which is a shame.

Joe Pera is the man I strive to be. This show is relatable, funny, and heartwarming. Joe Pera shares his favorite beautiful little details of the world around us from lighthouses to old sheet music. All in all, this is such an amazing show that made me feel happy and understood.

A New (Old) Generation
gmrpc030113 September 2021
Joe Pera talks to you stands out amongst the current T. V. schedule- in fact, it stands out against the world entirely.

In the the post 9/11 era, it seems that our world has been marked by fear, cynicism, pessimism and hysteria. Against this back drop, Joe Pera and his carefully crafted 10 minute episodes, stand as the purest of remedies.

The show functions primarily as a monologue, with Joe taking us through his life experiences. Typically, they consist of wholesome activities in middle America. This, in turn, is intersected by more dramatic vignettes that piece together the many disparate characters that surround Joe in his life.

Joe is a pure, gentle soul and easily the most likeable character on television. Though in his thirties, he embodies the gentle naivety of both young children and the elderly. This potent innocence helping heighten the emotion that 'Talks With You' doesn't shy away from. Joe, like all of us, traverses life, death and love over the two seasons- with a careful reverence that is rarely seen anywhere anymore.

Joe Pera Talks With You marks a new generational shift in story telling. Casting off the sitcom shackles of post-modern irony, that have been well worn by now. Talks With You is approaching the future with a good attitude, no doubt fuelled by a good walk and a nice cup of cocoa.

One of Joe's favourite breakfasts is Oatmeal. And that is what this show feels like to me- a warm bowl of hearty, nutritious oatmeal eaten on the first cold day of autumn. Something you might have forgotten about completely, but so warmly received when experienced again.

I can't watch normal shows now
mctwitty-111 January 2020
Joe Pera Talks With You is a wonderful invention. It's something I needed. It is peerless. This isn't exactly comedy; it's something new. Watching this show is therapeutic, at times hilarious, heart wrenching, informative and big dumb smile inducing. I joined a streaming service just for this show. In a world of fast paced, flashy shock TV it is beyond refreshing. I know it's not for everyone. I just want to thank Adult Swim for making this happen. Really, this stuff means a lot to me.

Boring
odaicerp17 January 2022
I don't understand how an anorexic monotone speaking boring character lead a show? It's supposed to be a comedy I think but I find nothing funny or interesting about this show. If it is made to put people to sleep it succeeds because I can't even watch a commercial for the show without being completely bored. How is it on for a new season?

True sincerity from the most unexpected source.
alphacast19 January 2020
When I sat down on Youtube and took a look at some of the free clips from Joe Pera Talks with You, I expected typical Adult Swim fare. Sarcastic dry humor against a surreal and even occasionally horrifying backdrop. It's the kind of humor I enjoy, and it's the reason I tune into Adult Swim's stranger lineup. What I got instead was something, simply put, beautiful. I say this without irony, without sarcasm, without hesitation. Joe Pera Talks with You is a beautiful series. Writer/creator/producer Joe Pera stars as a fictionalized version of himself, a quietly passionate, socially awkward, and exceptionally kind choir teacher who wanders through his small Michigan town pondering on life, friendship, worldly and personal problems, love, the subtle complexities of ordering breakfast in a diner, and whether a fractured soul can be whole again. At 11 minutes per episode (aside from a few special 22 minute epics), its meandering, calm pace never overstays its welcome and despite an intentionally "boring" approach never actually bores, largely thanks to its well shot setting and beautifully chosen music. Its humor is sharp when it chooses to sneak in, stunning you with surprised fits of laughter with pinpoint precision, and its dramatic moments are heartfelt, natural, and incredibly moving, without ever getting preachy. The performances are all enjoyable if relaxingly simplistic, but Pera himself takes the show and powerfully drives it, wearing the grandfatherly guise, posture, and wisdom of a man sixty years his senior as though it was always who he was. There is a sincerity in Joe Pera Talks with You that cannot be ignored, and it plays out with a truly positive outlook that chooses to lovingly coexist with its negative world, rather than ignore it outright. Joe Pera Talks with You will make you feel good. It's as simple as that.

The most comforting show I've ever watched
astrofy14 August 2021
Honestly a monolith of goodness in this world, as if they took some heavily concentrated "good" and shoved it into a 30-ish year old man with the spirit of an 80 year old man. Could not recommend more to anyone out there who's just looking for some feel good, relaxing content. I honestly use this show and "Joe Pera Talks You To Sleep" to fall asleep pretty much every night. Thank you, Joe. :)
