Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

Odin’s Eye Entertainment has boarded “In Vitro,” an elevated sci-fi thriller starring Ashley Zukerman (“Succession” ) and Talia Zucker (“Lake Mungo”).
Pic is co-directed by Tom McKeith and Will Howarth, whose debut feature, “Beast,” was nominated for best first feature at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015. Odin’s Eye will introduce the new film to buyers for the first time during the Cannes Market.
The narrative of “In Vitro” is set on a remote cattle property in the near future, where a woman (Zucker) and her husband (Zukerman) have been experimenting with biotechnology and developing illegal breeding methods. It’s a mostly isolated existence for the couple, but when a series of unsettling occurrences take place, the woman is faced with the disturbing reality of just how far her husband will go for love. McKeith and Howarth co-wrote the script with Zucker.

A good hack and slash movie is sometimes what a person needs to get their mind right when it comes to horror, but sometimes such a movie can make a person whistle low and say ‘damn’. With a starting point that feels as though it could have benefited from a little more exposition that might have set things up in a more effective way, this movie still manages to break free of those few uncertain moments when the main thrust of the movie starts to come through. As the two women that start the movie out are abducted one might

Westerns are populated with cowboys, gunslingers, bandits, Native American, horses, cows and buffalos. But the genre is much more complex than shoot-‘em-ups. In fact, the best Westerns are Shakespearean in nature exploring such universal subjects as love, hate, revenge, greed, power and good versus evil. One of the most popular sub-genres is the “ranch” Western where the patriarch or matriarch — remember Barbara Stanwyck in “The Big Valley”– governs with a strict and often violent hand. They act like they are above the law and often take legal matters into their own hand. They are often widowers or widows and have sons who run the spectrum from hero to villain.
Jane Campion’s highly acclaimed Netflix Oscar-contender “The Power of the Dog” falls into this sub-genre. Set in Montana in 1925, the story revolves around the charismatic but sadistic Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) who relishes being the master of a cattle rancher.

Vietnam. In Hollywood films, it’s a country of war-torn battlefields and sweaty, booby-trapped jungles and faceless locals who are either victims or violent aggressors. But things are changing, both in and outside of Hollywood. Above: Bone (1972) / The Furies (1950)In 1967, Barbara Stanwyck was looking back on a five-decade career, a feat few of her early Hollywood peers could match. Having spent much of the past decade working exclusively in television—she was an actress, she reasoned, so if movie scripts weren’t coming in, she would act on TV—she had found more failures than success. But by the late 60s, Stanwyck was finally where she wanted to be: the star of The Big Valley, an ABC Western that ran four seasons from 1965 - 1969. Stanwyck played matriarch Victoria Barkley on the series, which focused on the lives and loves of the millionaire Barkley ranching family.Like many series of the time, The Big Valley had a constant stream of guest stars, but one young actor stood out to Stanwyck when he guested on the show as an ex-slave serving as convict labor on the Barkley ranch.

When not making tons of money collaborating with James Stewart, Anthony Mann directed some really grim westerns. This mini-epic spells out the ugly real-life Code of The West: seizing land and establishing private empires. Walter Huston’s T.C. Jeffords maintains his sprawling fiefdom through economic tyranny (he prints his own money and expects banks to accept it) — and by simple violence, murdering the people that have lived on ‘his’ land for generations. Barbara Stanwyck is the feisty heir who wages generational war on her piratical father. It’s the darkest and most subversive of Huac-era ‘noir’ westerns.

Warner Bros.’ DC Films unit has pulled the plug on Ava DuVernay’s “New Gods” and James Wan’s “Aquaman” spinoff “The Trench,” the studio announced on Thursday.
The projects had both been in development for the last three years.
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. and DC said in a statement. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.”
“I’m upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. Diving into Kirby’s Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. That can’t be taken away,...

Exclusive: Nevision, the British producer behind shows including BBC drama Keeping Faith, has signed an exclusive development deal with writer Jeff Murphy to create high-end scripted projects for the global market.
Murphy has written on Welsh series including Hinterland and Hidden, while his feature Denmark, starring Rafe Spall, was released in 2019. He will create his own ideas for Nevision, as well as helping develop the firm’s slate of feature films and series.
Nevision detailed a number of projects already in the pipeline: The Furies, a supernatural police procedural with elements of horror, which is in the works with Hidden creator and showrunner Mark Andrew. Moifaa, a family movie about New Zealand’s first sporting hero, is also on the way. Both are being developed in association with Kiwi producer Pukeko Pictures.

The Evolution Championship Series was already set for an unprecedented year. Initially, they were going to do eight games, plus a special invitational tournament for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to celebrate its 20-year anniversary. Pesky Covid-19 made it very apparent that a big get-together in Las Vegas at the end of the summer was absolutely not in the cards. Instead, they announced Evo Online. The announced games were dropped and replaced with four games that were at least celebrated for having good-to-great netcode.
The plan was to start Evo Online on July 4-5 with each weekend based on one of the different games. Then it would culminate on the weekend of July 31-August 2. Not only would we see the Top 8s for those games, but there would be big announcement trailers for other fighting games and the like. It wasn’t the classic Evo, but it would be enough of a...

The latest genre opus from Richard Bates Jr., whose previous work includes Excision, Trash Fire and Suburban Gothic, Killer Instinct (formerly known as Tone-Deaf) tells the story of Olive (Amanda Crew), a millennial working in the fashion industry who decides to vacation in the countryside to spend a quiet weekend alone after losing her job and having her last complicated relationship implode. She makes the mistake of renting a country house from a complete stranger online, old-fashioned widower Harvey (Robert Patrick), who – seemingly succumbing to dementia – struggles to hide his pyschopathic tendencies…

The Evolution Championship Series was set for July 31 to August 2. Thousands of fighting game fans from all over the world would have crammed themselves into a Las Vegas arena to scream along with Cell’s intro animation from Dragon Ball FighterZ. Nine different fighting games were going to be streamed for an online audience over the course of three days in what my wife calls “the most trying weekend of our relationship” because she can’t for the life of her understand why someone would dedicate their weekend to watching strangers play video games.
The line-up of games included Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken 7, Samurai Shodown, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r], and Granblue Fantasy Versus. There was also going to be an eight-player invitational tournament for Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a game that was extremely instrumental in Evo’s early existence.
Unsurprisingly, plans have changed.

The fantastical worlds of Studio Ghibli offer a perfect escape from our currently bleak world and this summer, there’s a new way to relive one of the finest aspects of their classic animation Princess Mononoke. Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 film, scored by frequent collaborator Joe Hisaishi, is now receiving its first-ever vinyl release–or, we should say, releases, as three brand-new, separate editions will be coming this July from Norman Records.
First up, the Soundtrack release will feature the score, conducted by Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, with main theme vocals by Yoshikazu Mera. Then there’s the Symphonic Suite, which was recorded a year after the film’s original release, reimagining the score with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Lastly, as a blueprint before the film, the Image Album was recorded before the soundtrack, based on Miyazaki’s notes and ideas for the score. All in all, it looks like an...

Another year has come and gone, and it was another great one for horror. Theatrical horror, indie horror, physical media, streaming, books, TV—there was so much good stuff I couldn’t even get to all of it, though I gave it my best effort. Here are some of my favorites of 2019 in no particular order.
Shudder: In just a few short years, Shudder has become the single most essential must-have for every horror fan. Their library grows more expansive and impressive every week, their curation of beloved favorites, smaller and lesser-known indies, and horror from around the globe impeccable. This year alone they featured the likes of Tigers Are Not Afraid, the Tom Savini documentary Smoke and Mirrors, One Cut of the Dead, Belzebuth, The Furies, Get My Gun, Hagazussa, Knife + Heart, The Ranger, the documentary Horror Noire, The Head Hunter, and so, so many more. Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

The grosses were commensurately modest but The Furies has been sold to half a dozen major territories including the Us and Odin’s Eye Entertainment is negotiating deals for Latin America, Russia and Italy.
Los Angeles-based Timothy O’Brien of Ovation Films, who has represented Emu Runner since just before its Berlin premiere, is hopeful of international sales.
Thomas’ debut feature, which had its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival, revolves around a nine-year-old Indigenous girl (Rhae-Kye Waites) in the remote Brewarrina community, who finds solace in the company of a wild emu after her mother’s unexpected death.

If you have any intention of watching The Furies, a new slasher out of Australia making its exclusive streaming premiere on Shudder, don’t read the rest of this review. Don’t read any reviews. Don’t watch a trailer. Do what you can to replicate the experience I had, which was sitting down to watch the film knowing the title and nothing more. It’s the best way to appreciate the way the movie unfolds and the surprises it has in store. Trust me.
While I won’t be spoiling any of the major twists of the film, even knowing the premise is more than I want to spoil. However, this is a review, and you’ve already made the choice to read this far despite being warned. The Furies, the feature debut of writer/director Tony D'Aquino, finds a young woman named Kayla (Airlie Dodds) kidnapped and waking...

‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.
Surveying the challenges facing the indie film business, Transmission Films’ Andrew Mackie tells If:...

One of the biggest announcements recently was that director Ava DuVernay was going to direct the film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s classic DC comic New Gods. This is going to be awesome because that means we are finally going to see Darkseid and Apokolips, but what else will this contain?
The director held an Ama on Twitter, and this is what she had to say:
How could any self-respecting Barda fan not include the The Furies?! I’m looking forward to them so much. #AskAva https://t.co/83zD6PeFBx

An above-average riff on the reliable “hunting humans for sport” scenario that’s been around at least as far as 1932’s Rko thriller “The Most Dangerous Game,” “The Furies” marks a solid feature debut for Aussie writer-director Tony D’Aquino. A pacy tale about kidnapped women being butchered by mutant monstrosities while sickos pay to watch online, this well-produced Ozploitation effort has the heavy-duty gore to excite horror hounds and packs enough of a girl-power punch to avoid dismissal as just another misogynist slasher movie. Debuting in Asia at BiFan after screenings in Brussels Fantastic Festival and Edinburgh, these “Furies” are certain to be let loose at many more genre-related events, and also have a shot at theatrical exposure in Australia and beyond. Local release details are pending.

This supremely gory outback slasher is an efficient, smartly paced horror flick that puts a series of inventive twists on some familiar genre ideas. As such, it represents a significant debut for Australian writer-director Tony D’Aquino and marks him out as a serious horror talent to watch.
After a brief prologue, giving a hint of what’s in store, the film opens with teenage best friends Kayla (Airlie Dodds) and Maddie (Ebony Vagulans), having an argument after spraying “Fuck the Patriarchy” in an underpass. After Maddie storms off, both girls are kidnapped by masked men and Kayla wakes up in a box in the outback with “Beauty 6” written on it.
She quickly discovers that she’s not alone, and that as well as...

While I initially mistook this for a film about adults who dress up as furry animals, The Furies is actually a graphic splatter movie from Australia about a group of young women who are kidnapped and taken to a forest as part of a sadistic game where they act as prey to a bunch of psychopathic masked murderers. It's a familiar set up to anyone with an interest in the horror genre, but The Furies is set apart both in the skill with which it is made, and the fact that it takes us places we didn't expect to go. It's also quite funny.
Kayla (Airlie Dodds) wakes up in a box in a forest and meets two other women who have found themselves in the same situation, and together they figure out a plan for survival. It's such a well-worn trope that you'd be forgiven for the assumption...

What you need to know about Project xCloud, including latest news, release date, trailer, and more!
Microsoft has formally announced Project xCloud, a new program that will allow you to stream console games to mobile devices. The current plan is for Microsoft to fill data centers with hardware that is capable of running and streaming console-quality games. It's a technological concept that we've seen other, similar services utilize, (such as Google Stadia) but the big twist in this instance is that Microsoft intends to use the service to bring Xbox games to many modern devices that have a screen.
Xbox representatives made it clear that Microsoft doesn't intend for this technology to replace the Xbox. Instead, it's designed to give Xbox gamers a way to play their games away from their consoles and for those without an Xbox console to enjoy some of the system's games on a variety of platforms.
