The main character, Alex Sullivan, is a 20 year old piano man who plays in local bars and restaurants for pennies. He lives with his girlfriend Lisa, a waitress, in a small house where she is paying most of the necessary bills to survive. One day, Alex's manager, Rob, announces that a famous record producer, Mia Filliano, has been in contact with him, and how she wants to talk to Alex about a possible record deal. She requests he write her a song as a demo by the end of the week, but it must be absolutely perfect. To do so, Alex spends all of his time writing, going back and forth to his elderly name, Mr. Hooper's house, due to the fact Alex doesn't own a real piano and Hooper does.
