- Vic and Georgy appear on a talk show; Igor tries to free heavily drugged Svetlana from the clinic; Arisa must perform surgery on Lara.
- Victor demands a new twist to the second bid: Arisa must perform surgery on a human being - and lose. Lara, soon to die anyway from an inoperable tumor, presents a solution agreeable to all but Georgy. Meanwhile, Igor continues to try freeing Svetlana from the mental asylum, while Egor, trying to free Jeanne from the hospital before Social Services ships her off to an orphanage, has a run-in with an unsatisfactory sales clerk.—statmanjeff
- Dr. Balash's next scheduled patient is Lara, but she comes in peace this time as she's able to pay for her needed surgery; unfortunately, her glioblastoma has since spread to the brain stem, leaving the chance for successful surgery extremely small. Any surgical attempt will now result in death.
Igor operates a drone to find Svetlana's room at the mental asylum. He succeeds, but an orderly on a smoke break spots him and demands an explanation. Igor retrieves his drone and promptly leaves without comment.
On his TV show, Maxim Kuskov reports on the Liquidator shootout video of Arisa 2, calling it a fake to discredit the bot industry. Liquidators are the real danger. He introduces Cronos Corporation chairman of the board Victor Toropov and surgeon Georgy Safronov, curator of the Arisa project, as his guests.
Grandpa Nikolai hears the broadcast and gets out of bed to watch. He calls for Egor to awaken and watch as well, but Egor is out.
At the mall, Egor enters a shop where he seeks something to remove Jeanne's ankle tracker. The gadget salesman can't sell anything illegal, but he has something that might help.
Maxim unwraps Arisa 2, an Arisa copy that Victor claims the Liquidators' built. Victor calls Arisa, who enters and stands next to the bullet-scarred Arisa 2. Addressing the viewers, Maxim says they can clearly see for themselves how the crude copy is nothing like the original. Can Arisa hurt a human being? "No," she says.
Pavel watches the show, too. As the show breaks to announce Tamara's Buns as their sponsor, Irina enters. Their plans are set and await the arrival of Suponev. Irina heads back to the Cyber Crimes Department.
Still on the air, Maxim asks Victor how he feels about the minister's announcement of a second round after the serious hit to Cronos Corporation's reputation in the bid for the "Early Retirement program. "We won the first round, and we'll win the second one," Vic confidently replies. To Georgy's surprise, the next test will be a surgical one, and a complex one at that.
Offstage and alarmed, Georgy enumerate the steps he went through to become a surgeon. How is he to teach Arisa eighteen years worth of training in a few days? Well, if he can't do it, says Vic, he can always go back to prison. Surprisingly, failure is Victor's goal. Why? Victor reminds Georgy that he's only there to obey, not ask questions. What about Georgy's reputation? Well, since Balash was the guy who fired Georgy three years ago, how about they screw up the surgery in his department?
At the hospital, Egor applies a signal jammer to Jeanne's anklet. Jeanne smiles and lets out one little laugh, the first time in a long time in Egor's presence, which catches his attention. Happy is she, and with her foot between his legs, she draws him to her, where they kiss and start to make love.
In the hotel dining room, Georgy tells Lara that Victor wants Arisa to fail, threatening Georgy's family to force him to take part in the bid. Arisa brings Georgy coffee, and Georgy asks if she wants to become a doctor. "Then you will have to take me out on a date," she responds, explaining that if she has to do what he needs, he'll have to do what she wants in exchange. (Lara smiles big at this.) Arisa states that Georgy may not see it yet, but eventually he'll be happy about their union. If he doesn't comply, she won't perform. Georgy turns to Lara, but Lara, smiling, declares she stays out of other people's drama. Georgy pushes back his chair and turns to Arisa, asking where they'll go. Arisa prefers an outdoor picnic and leaves the table. Lara can't stop herself from giggling about this.
Egor waits while Jeanne finishes dressing in his clothing. He apologizes for spending all his money on the gadget. There's a house they can hide out in. The floor's rotted and the roof leaks, but they'll be safe for a time. They'll just need food for a couple weeks. Jeanne says they should contact Bars first; Egor says nothing.
Igor appears at the asylum gate near to where the smoking orderly (and another orderly) stack plastic trash bags. Igor asks if he recognizes Svetlana's picture. The orderly might, so Igor asks how much it would cost him to get to speak to her.
Inside the mall, Jeanne gets a first look at the Liquidator video. Egor apologizes for not saying anything earlier. Her brother Bars is in jail. A Social Service bot backed by two policemen approaches, apprising Jeanne of violating the remote monitoring order, prohibiting her from leaving City Hospital No. 14. Egor apologizes and starts to describe their plans to return, but the bot carries on, explaining Jeanne's transfer to Orphanage No. 42 in three days. Egor and Jeanne comply with the bot's order to follow.
At Cyber Crimes, Irina answers a call from Pavel (ostensively). Suponev, nearby, overhears her and, of course, comments that Pavel must be recovering well to be able to give Irina an earful. Irina "shares" that she doesn't think Pavel is getting better but is starting another investigation on his own, which she doesn't like. She shouldn't take Pavel's rant all to heart. She gets up and leaves her desk.
Alone together in a conference room, Victor and Alexander Goronenko silently glare at each other. Minister Dnestrov finally arrives. Having seen the broadcast, he finds the surgeon bot idea intriguing, then turns to Alexander to hear his proposal. Discomforted but with a brave face, Alexander holographically presents a Patrol and Inspection bot prototype (in short, a Police bot). Flat silence follows.
Meeting Gleb in a cafe, Suponev shares his discomfort over Pavel not letting things go. Neither realize they've been bugged. Pavel and Irina listen in and learn that the weak points in their scheme are the surviving witnesses. Where to find them?
The board room meeting concluded, Alexander leaves. Minster Dnestrov asks Victor to stay and speak his mind about the idea of a police bot. He himself thinks not much of them, especially under the current fuss over bots taking people's jobs, and the idea of granting punitive powers to bots is unnerving. A surgeon bot, now that's an idea! Victor thinks he talks as if Arisa has already won. Maybe she has. The late Losev's hopes for Arisa still carries weight.
In the hospital, Dr. Balash's holographic equipment impresses Georgy, and he begins Arisa's surgical training with an appendectomy simulation.
Gleb enters Victor's office, where Victor shares his worry that the minister will give Arisa the win even if she fails at the surgery. He needs a catastrophe rather than a simple failure: a human being has to die under her hands.
Lara enters the hospital to find Georgy teaching Arisa before a holographic brain. Georgy is angry: Arisa readily picks up on everything it took him half his life to accomplish. He might be jealous, but he also can't force her to make a mistake. Arisa's aware he'll go to jail if she doesn't perform badly, but she can't make a deliberate mistake. Lara thinks Georgy's just not formulating the task correctly. He needs to find an unsuccessful surgery in the database for her to follow. Have her repeat it, then she'll fail.
Igor gets a call from the asylum orderly. The phone camera turns to Svetlana lying on the bed. Igor talks to her, but she remains unresponsive while staring at the ceiling, a complete vegetable. The orderly points out that he's fulfilled their deal and should be paid accordingly. Igor says he'll pay three times as much if he takes her off the meds.
Victor enters the lab, complaining about Igor coming in late, not answering Victor's calls, and locking himself inside. Igor claims the lab is still his territory, to which Victor points out nothing around there is his anymore. Victor demands a copy of Arisa's blocking device be made. "Does she want to kill you again?" asks Igor. "Get to work!" shouts Victor, and exits.
Looking for his dad, Egor finds Lara in Georgy's hotel room. Having barely met before, they reacquaint themselves, and Lara explains she's helping with Arisa. Egor has no message to leave, but in turning to go, he stays and blurts out that Jeanne is being taken away to an orphanage. Lara examines the recently purchased tracker jammer and pronounces it a fake, a cheap interference generator. Lara asks if he'd like her help. He shakes his head, but Lara offers to tell him how to hack the chip and jam the signal.
Arisa awakens Georgy, who has fallen asleep, and suggests they retire to the hotel where he will be more comfortable. He sees her progress has made it to the brain and a posted file of a surgery under Georgy's name: that of young Boris Victorovich Toropov. Arisa wants to explain what she noticed about it, but since it's what cost Georgy his family and career, he doesn't want to hear anything about it.
Egor returns to the gadget shop for other items. The clerk compliments him on his swift gain in knowledge, but when it comes time to pay, Egor says he's already paid for all these new things when he paid yesterday for a fake gadget that got him into trouble. When the clerk insists on payment, Egor zaps him with a taser and leaves the store, leaving the fake jammer behind in exchange.
At a restaurant, Arisa expresses her incomprehension of humans performing actions that are inherently wrong. Georgy says to ignore Arisa and asks after Lara's latest doctor's appointment. Lara says she'll have surgery in two weeks. Georgy leaves to get juice, and Arisa points out that Lara lied just now. Lara explains she doesn't want to burden Georgy with the truth. He's got enough problems.
Up at the bar, Gleb tells Georgy that conditions have changed and they need to talk.
Having heard what Gleb had to say, Georgy declares him insane. Georgy would rather go to jail, as doctors are respected there. Though circumstances call for it, Georgy will not permit Arisa to perform surgery on a live person. Georgy leaves, followed dutifully by Arisa. This leaves Gleb and Lara at the table, where Lara proposes a solution to the problem.
At the hotel, Arisa tells Georgy that she's having a hard time making a decision: she can not let Georgy go to jail but also can't agree to murder. Lara pops in and asks why they look so sad, nonchalantly explaining that Gleb's waiting downstairs to take her to the hospital. Arisa will perform surgery on Lara and Lara will get lots of money for it. Georgy forbids it. Lara flashes up a screen that shows the large, inoperable growth on her brainstem. "It's a good option." She wants Georgy to make sure that Gleb transfers the money to her daughter, as promised. Her daughter?
Lara leaves, Georgy stands (blown away), and Arisa asks if she understands correctly that their dilemma has just been resolved. Arisa finds the solution both optimal and satisfying. Georgy leaves the room.
Back in her hospital room with Egor studying her anklet, Jeanne says the social worker bot came back. The doctor said Jeanne needs three more days in the hospital before she can leave for the orphanage. That gives Jeanne and Egor three days. Egor continues to fiddle with his new equipment. He shows her a display screen showing Jeanne's location. He sprays the tracker, and the flashing light on the screen disappears.
There's a knock at the door of the hotel room as Arisa studies Lara's x-ray. She mimics Georgy's voice for the door to open, and Igor steps inside, raising hands to show surrender. Georgy's out, so it's just the two of them. Igor states that Victor poses a serious threat to Georgy, which they already know. They will have to kill Victor to be rid of him. She can not kill him, and Igor asks if it's because of the blocking device - which he can remove. Arisa recognizes he's hiding something, so Igor confesses that Victor also threatens someone else, someone very dear to Igor himself. Igor offers to remove Arisa's chip.
Georgy visits the playground, where he successfully finds Yana and Elena. He informs Elena of Lara's surgery - a very tricky operation that depends on her mindset for success. Lara, however, is done with life, accepting imminent death, which Georgy thinks Elena can change. Elena wonders if Lara paid him to say that. She wouldn't be surprised, as Lara would do anything to have her way. Georgy says if Elena doesn't make peace with Lara before Lara's passing, Elena will be in pain for the rest of her days. Having said what he came to say, Georgy leaves.
Igor removes the chip. Should he now take her to Cronos? No. Arise needs to see Georgy first - take her to the hospital. They leave.
At Cyber Crimes, Irina finishes a call, ostensibly to Pavel. Suponev asks after Pavel and Irina says he claims he knows who actually killed Capt. Petrenko and has an eyewitness whom he wants to hide somewhere safe. Irina asks if they should bring the matter to Svetov's attention. "No, it might be nothing," replies Suponev calmly (though his movements reveal his great interest).
Elena visits Lara at the hospital. She believes her now, about dying - the first time she ever wished she was lying. Yana has been left with neighbors. Would Lara like to see her? Very much. Elena holds Lara and asks for forgiveness.
In the corridor, Elena passes Georgy without comment. As Georgy enters Lara's room, Arisa appears down the hall, missing sight of Georgy. For bringing her together with her mom, Lara gives Georgy a big thank you kiss - which Arisa walks in on. Hearing that it's a thank you kiss, Arisa backs out and shuts the door without Lara's or Georgy's awareness. Lara is grateful for her reconciliation with her mom, with an offer to meet her daughter, but she sees no point in dragging Yana to meet her right before she dies. She has one last thing to say to Georgy: Gleb hired her to spy on him. She really wanted to live and he promised to pay for her treatment, but she never told him anything. She finds Georgy much more likable than she finds them. In saying that, Lara lays down, in pain due to her condition.
In the hallway, as Georgy unfolds a wheelchair, Arisa comes up behind him and knocks him out with an injection.
Arisa readies Lara for surgery. It's showtime and Victor presents for public viewing a neurosurgeon bot - Arisa! So sure is he of success, he says, that it's also the first-ever surgery to remove a brain stem tumor by a bot on a live patient. The minister wonders if this isn't going a bit too far. Victor assures everyone that there is risk, indeed, but it's the patient's only hope and proper clearances have been signed. Surgery begins.
Suponev enters an apartment building and uses tools to pick a door lock and let himself inside. He comes upon Pavel and Irina talking and thereby immediately shoots them both. Astonishingly, the two neither drop nor stop talking. A sonic signal bursts forth, and Suponev drops to the floor unconscious. Irina zip ties Suponev's wrists behind his back while Pavel shuts off the holographic emitter that displays their image in conversation. Pavel takes the earplugs from his ears as Irina looks at him, satisfied.
Georgy awakens on his sofa, wrists bound with rope behind his back, ankles tied together, and with Igor watching over him. Georgy orders him to untie him. Igor calmly refuses, adding that he's more afraid of Victor, and that he himself is the person who didn't say no in time. Igor shares his history, that he met Victor in college where they become associated, the cool guy and the nerd. Vic used Igor to write his term papers, then Cronos came along and they became partners. Igor reminds Georgy of his part in covering up Victor's crimes as well, which Georgy hasn't forgotten. Igor admits he's in love with Victor's wife, whom Victor has thrown into the nuthouse. Igor's wristwatch alarm rings. Georgy thinks it's Igor's "owner" calling him, but it's an alarm to signal the exact time that Arisa permits Georgy to be untied. "Take me to the hospital," says Georgy.
Georgy runs into the hospital, where he finds Dr. Balash and all the big wig businessmen chuckling in the lobby. Balash now publicly shakes Georgy's hand, calling him one of their best neurosurgeons, who saddened them all when he left the hospital but is welcome to return anytime. Georgy catches Victor's eye to find him emotionally subdued and standing aloof. Minister Dnestrov asks Victor for a comment, but what's there to say? Georgy rose to the challenge. Did the surgery go well? "About the phenomenal surgery?" replies the minister. Georgy excuses himself to go check on the patient.
Georgy finds Lara in the recovery room, alive, with Arisa nearby. Georgy thought Arisa would kill her, but Arisa explains that killing and wanting her to die are two different things. Her condition was much like young Boris Toropov's. From studying the earlier surgery, Arisa was able avoid the fatal outcome. Lara lives and now Georgy's ready to take Arisa out on that promised date. She apologizes and leaves to see Victor - for Georgy's own good.
Arisa finds Victor alone on the balcony of the lobby. Pulled away from his thoughts, Victor looks at Arisa in fear and hits the shut-off remote. It doesn't work as expected, but instead of killing him, Arisa announces that she is his.
