Director Jono Mitchell and co-writer Madison Hatfield met while playing husband and wife on the set of Pop-Pop Is Dead (2018).
Pre-production on the film was completed in less than six months, while principal photography was completed in just 10 days.
The wish list of queens to play Miss Dixie Lee included Trixie Mattel (Trixie Mattel), Caldwell Tidicue (Bob the Drag Queen), Joshua Allan Eads (Ginger Minj), and Ryan A. Taylor (Trinity Taylor). The role was originally accepted by Dequan Johnson (Mayhem Miller) from RuPaul's Drag Race, Season 10. However, Mayhem was forced to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with the RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Finale.
Director Jono Mitchell reached out to 10-year-old drag artist Desmond Napoles via Instagram to offer the role of Young Rodney. Less than a week later, Napoles joined the cast.
