beware
ops-5253522 January 2019
Its a hilarious story of womanhunting, greed, manipulaton, and as it seems from this documentary,a very toothless american judicial system, and a lack of will and manpower by law enforcers to deal with internet predators like john.

its the dum and stupid v.s. the bad and ruthless, in oxygen style and at oxygen level. you get what you pay for. watch it and behold and beware, you may be the next.

Too many recaps!!!!
dededexter14 March 2019
Not that interesting telling of this con-man's life. Way too many recaps. Also too many people just repeating what others had already said. Could have done in less than 60 minutes run time.

Terribly executed documentary Warning: Spoilers
Thought I'd actually watch this before trying the drama on Netflix, really wish I hadn't.

It's rubbish, and a fairly boring story, to be honest, delivered in a very cheesy and at times annoying way. There's constant recaps throughout, which would be from the ridiculous amount of ad breaks they have on American television. Mind-boggling that they couldn't just of edited this for release on a streaming service, around 10 times you have to hear the same sentence repeated immediately after it was just delivered. Not only that, the people being intereviewed then often repeat what has already been said as well, god-knows what the editor was doing. Underneath all of this is a constant drone of 'dramatic documentary' music which you can often find in bad/cheap American documentaries.

The actual story itself is of a manipulative, drug addicted, possessive guy. Seems like a nasty piece of work but probably not horrific enough to somehow make a drama series out of it.

It's essentially lots of people stating over and over what a bad guy he was, whilst not really showing much that warrant a detective to state that he was person he'd ever preosecuted.

Theer's No real exploration or explanation of why he was like this. Give it a miss.

Eye-opening film about hidden abuse
PotomacPunchy20 March 2019
Ever wonder why women don't "just leave" abusive relationships? Watch this series and find out. Three women per *day* are murdered in the United States by someone they know. Often their killer is a former intimate partner and the murder takes place within a month to a year after the victim leaves the relationship. This series explains how people like John use coercive control tactics (Google it) to manipulate and abuse victims using methods that are immoral but do not break the law. This film also illustrates how it's difficult for victims of coercive control to obtain meaningful help from the police, why a restraining order can escalate violence, and most frighteningly, why it's difficult for victims to obtain legal help; It's not due to lack of financial resources-something much more terrifying. This happens every day right under our noses. This could be happening to you, your sister, a co-worker, or a next-door neighbor. Enlighten yourself.

You go girl!
toppleover13 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This doc would've been better if they focussed on how the stepdaughter took vigilante justice into her own hands. John was a big loser. Manipulating these women, steeling drugs, doing what opiate addicts do. The experts were pretty lame: The psychiatrist saying he had traits of a psychopath....cool, but again, most addicts do. The dude who says there were other women that had been similarly used by John...cool, I'm sure there were a couple others. But he seems to have sponged off each one as long as he could, using their money to buy drugs and play video games all day. Guess what? That's what addicts do. Seems pretty obvious that the step daughter (who had put tracking devices on John's car) took a big knife and went out to kill her evil stepdad. Don't get me wrong - I think the world is a better place without him. But if he had really set out to kidnap her (which he had never done before - he wanted to shoot up, not kidnap people) she'd likely be the one who ended up on life support. Or at least a lot worse off than she was.

Those recaps really annoyed me
kasperdyrendal9 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I do get that John was a very bad man but once again we only get one side of the story. He was not serial killer or a murderer. Yes he had a knife at the end but we only don't know if SHE brought the knife and he wrestled it out of her and what not. Point is - we only get one side of the story.

I would have rated this 6-7 - the one sided story annoyed me. I decided to give it 4 because of all the recaps where it goes back like 15-20 seconds and repeats itself. That reeeeaaaalllly annoyed me. It was also because of the recaps I decided to write this review..

This "Dirty John" was not a single case, it's still happening everywhere
MovieIQTest31 December 2019
When I watched this documentary and compared it with the TV Drama "Dirty John" based upon the real guy in the documentary, I immediately thought about another similar case that is actually happening in the same Newport Beach neighborhood.

There's a very beautiful Philippine woman who just divorced her mega rich husband who was later convicted with a serious financial fraud crime and now serving a very long prison sentence.

When she divorced him before her husband's fall, she got the 1/2 community property from her husband, so she's now a very rich divorcee. Her landscape guy, a Japanese guy who used the same tricks and strategy just like the Dirty John, and fooled her step by step into her bedroom. The guy of the Japanese origin got nothing except a triple mortgaged house with lot of leans on it. When he hooked up the newly divorced Philippine woman, he immediately sold his house and moved into her mansion that used to be her ex-husband's property. This guy has been doing the same things exactly like Dirty John did, the MO is almost like he just conveniently copied Dirty John's formula and tricks. After he moved into her house, he's not a lawnmower guy, but a very caring driver and loving companion to the lonely divorcee, carrying out all the odd chores for her; exactly like Dirty John did, but she paid everything.

When my wife told me what happened to her Philippine colleague's daughter, I was so amazed that same scenarios could be repeated so soon and almost the same as what we saw in "Dirty John" TV drama. What the Japanese American did, does, doing are exactly like what Eric Bana did in every episode.

The weirdest thing to me is another "Dirty John" is doing his cons in Newport Beach, California now. What a coincidence!

I really want to make a copy of this documentary and that "Dirty John" complete 8 Episodes of Season 1 TV series in a USB driver, asking my wife to give it to the mother and her daughter. I am so certain that once they watch, both of them would immediately recognize and realize who they're dealing with now: A "Dirty John, Chapter 2" or, "Dirty John v. 2.0" is just happening around them. But so far, my wife still refuse to do them a favor; or, do me a favor.

John was a victim too
rplooijmans8 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah I agree with this other review. John seems to be an ahole but he didn't deserve those 13 stabwoonds. He probably hurt himself enough already. That daughter who killed him seemed very odd. I highly doubt this whole stabbing incedent was as innocent as they make it out to be. This man was a loving husband and his wife finds some drugs and what does she do? She does not confront him, no she calls the FBI and rats him out. I'd be angry as well. This man had a problem. Apperantly he had 99 poblems. And yes, many if thos were women. His name was John. His name, was John.

Warning: Spoilers
He never actually did anything dirty or threatening. Awful attempt at creating an excuse for the weird woman that murdered him. Horrendous.

How Dumb is Debbie?
quockquock14 February 2023
I get that Debbie was manipulated and used etc... But after the third or fourth time that Debbie read police reports, threatening texts from John, mugshots, cars being set on fire and so on, enough is enough Debbie. But she keeps going back to him? What a moron Debbie must be. Debbie hides for 23 days, lives in hotel rooms, moves, drives a different car, all to hide from John. Then John texts Debbie and she goes to visit him in the hospital and feels sorry for him? I think she got what she deserved, if she's that naive. When a man threatens to make one of your children disappear and you're still with him, you've got some major issues of your own Deb.

Absolutely nothing new!!!
li090442616 August 2023
The movie "Dirty John: The Dirty Truth" is a documentary that delves into the true story of Debra Newell, a successful interior designer who becomes involved with a con artist named John Meehan. The documentary unravels the tactics he used to deceive and manipulate several women. It is indeed surprising to see that many victims, like Debra Newell, are drawn to men who possess a combination of strong personality, machismo, education, and romanticism, and who often pretend to have prestigious professions such as doctors or lawyers. Do they ever ask themselves: Why would this kind of man be still single and available?

The documentary is monotonous, repetitive and does not provide any fresh information about con artists targeting vulnerable women.
