Good.

Shall we just get the first & most obvious question out of the way?

Is this as good as the original?

The short answer is unsurprisingly "no", though such a task was always going to be an impossible accomplishment for whoever bravely initiated the undertaking - regardless of their undisputed talents - especially considering the perfect pilot writer Dennis Kelly & Marc Munden faultlessly created for Channel 4 all those years ago in 2013. However, that's not to say the first episode is bad because it isn't. In fact, it's pretty decent & after watching the debut, also clear Gillian Flynn & capable director Toby Haynes tried to stay true to the intentions of the UK version - so I admire their apparent efforts... But regardless, this has the undeniable & unfortunate disadvantage of being a reboot of a beloved cult classic & therefore, as a consequence, will forever be saddled with the unenviable quest of stepping out from under its enormous shadow - which from first impressions, I'm not sure it's ever going to be able to do.

For instance, if this was an original series, I'm absolutely certain the reception from fans would be warmer - as it can't be stated enough, it's seems like a really strong show... But when the standard has already been set higher by their predecessors, the result will dampen our somewhat muted reactions.

As an example, the violence was handled more effectively in UTOPIA because the people involved in its creation made the bold decision not to pull any punches when it came to featuring graphic confrontations. Dennis Kelly wanted to shock people who watched the series because he believed violence is always nasty & never something to glorify. Thus, we witnessed scenes which were truly horrifying to see unfold & this defined the approach filmmakers took when tackling issues within the narrative; it was uncompromising, bleak & gnarly... Additionally, genuine tension was built as a result because we were always fearful for our protagonists - scared for what they may have to potentially endure - which only enhanced the palpable atmosphere... Whereas this seems noticeably more restrained & less brutal. There are sequences of murder but the deaths don't pack anywhere near as much of a punch when you watch them. The hits don't land & I simply wish they'd gone a bit further.

We'd Like The Utopia Manuscript.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay since Amazon keeps pushing this show into my face, here we go....

We BEGIN here with a young couple getting out of the car and going into .....wow, a house FULL of crap. And while looking through piles of stuff, they find a pile of old comics. UTOPIA, COMICS.

Apparently when the news that UTOPIA comics have been discovered goes public online, apparently web geeks go nuts.

And then we get, FRINGECOM...not sure whats happening there but we're there! And a group of geeks is meeting together with the young couple from the beginning. Oh they are receiving people to BID on the Utopia comic. People are like GAGA over seeing some of the pages. they only show 1 page to each bidder. Ruh roh, 1 guy sneaks in taking a picture of 1 page.

Certainly a lot of hubbub about a comic. But they SELL for 20k to a guy in the Penthouse. Then 2 guys show up to the bidding room and drug everyone at gunpoint. These 2 guys get the info on who bought the COMIC. And some kid he parlays his way to get into the Penthouse and he's in there. And the BUYER comes back to the PENTHOUSE with a fangirl, just as the 2 guys show up at the door to the PENTHOUSE.

+1 Star for the funny stuff the KID was doing playing aorund in the Penthouse...

Oh my the KID gets away, for now anyway. But the BUYER.... HE DOESn't make it. Fangirl doesn't make it. These 2 GUYS ARE killing everyone involved wiht the seeing of the UTOPIA comic.

Awesome.

+1 Star for the going down the list of everyone who saw the UTOPIA comic and getting rid of them. Ruthless!!!

Nice. Very Impressive first EP. 7/10

Down the rabbit hole

An excellent start to this reimagining of the original masterpiece that will offer nostalgic spine tingles to its fans while standing very much on its own feet.

Offering its own unique creativity and opting for a different path through the maze whilst the core brilliance shines through.

Leaves the Original For Dead

It's just crisper, slicker and a far better exposition of the concept.

I tried. Honestly.

I tried to get into this. I really did. Sure I'm a massive fan of the Channel 4 original. I mean, that's why I was excited for this but jeez... As soon as our pretty blonde anti-hero was introduced and a dorky romance scenario set up via (insert whatever)con I could not. What's wrong with you America. Watch the original if you want a unique thrill ride with shocking and surprising twists and turns that has a soundtrack like nothing you've heard before and a visual style that subverts the darkness of the underlying narrative... because that's what's missing here... and more. In this case, familiarity has very rightly bred contempt.

Could not get into it.

1 out of 5 stars.

A concept and story about a young couple finding a comic book that can foresee what is going to happen in the future. From diseases to cataclysmic events. While many comic book fans who seen the dystopia book wants there hands on utopia. Strange people are after them and putting there lives in danger.

The script does not do anything to make the characters interesting. The direction is boring with its set up. Its weird, strange, and forgettable so far.

Couldn't get past the texting on screen
michael-johnson-au1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Unnecessarily patronizing to appeal to "the kids". Really not what the first episode needed.

The one page view per bid? Huh? Page chosen by the seller and each buyer gets a different page. Who's then bidding against them? But maybe they are buying the entire comic. Then why view only one page? Who writes this?

Fell asleep at 30 minutes.
