Decent show for a highschool murder mystery
arod_8530 November 2021
It could have been better, but it was a pretty interesting show that kept me vested considering I'm 36 and this show is about a bunch of high schoolers that "find themselves" after being accused of murdering a peer. As far as high school shows go, it was one of the better series. I hate shows that have supposed to be 16 year-olds looking 25 and acting 35 (I'm talking to you, Pretty Little Liars and Riverdale), but this one was fairly believable and didn't give the characters too much credit, like other shows where a 16 year-old has numerous unexplained financial resources and seems to be smarter than any FBI agent or detective in town. Not great, but good.

John Hughes' Pretty Little Liars + Gossip Girl
pasaribuharisfadli19 December 2021
Like most of the US' teen TV shows, One of Us Is Lying still displays characters that look too old as a high school student. It's a bit creepy, to be honest.

But, despite that, it's an engaging murder mystery entwined with your daily dose of teen drama. A very binge-worthy show. Until they did a slight alteration with the finale.

Gone is the intensity of the climax and the satisfying epilogue of the book on which the show is based. Replace with your typical bland soap opera twist that clearly is a bridge to the next season. I'm so sorry, but because of that, I've lost my interest to follow their next story.

If you can get past the clichés, the actual mystery is pretty good.
cgvsluis4 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Season one has some beautiful actors and some fun twists. There are a lot of clichés...but I feel that was intentional and a real hat tip to John Hughes, the original and the best at teen angst-y drama films.

The story is about five kids who get detention on the first day of school, by the same teacher and all for unusual reasons. The five kids are a jock, a beauty, a brain, a drug dealer and the school rounder or narc. At the start of detention the narc ends up dying after having an allergic reaction to something in the water he drank. As it turns out all of the other kids have a reason to silence him, thus giving them potential motive to kill.

Lots of twists and turns, it becomes really hard to determine who is bad and who is good as everyone is keeping secrets and looking guilty. Really good mystery at the end of the day...that isn't resolved at the end of season one.

I can't wait to find out who really did it!

It was ok, but...
frank78-19-46492310 December 2021
I usually enjoy these types of shows. Although when watching the trailer, my first thought was "Oh look, Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars combined!"

I wasn't completely wrong. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed watching it. But I am so over the cliche portrayals of the young people (nerd, athlete etc...) and also I'm getting really tired of 25-something people playing higschool students. Bronwyn was the Spencer and Cooper was Emily of the PLL.

Once almost everyone got ruled out as a suspect it could only have been that one person. Which I am okay with. What I'm not ok is how the whole thing ended. Not gonna spoil anything for you, it was a pretty decent watch if you can omit some stuff.

A good thriller to help you pass the time
Themoviedigger28 February 2022
Ok so from the moment I saw the cast, I didn't have exactly high standards for the show. It seemed like yet another teen drama involving a rich kids' school, a bunch of over the top depictions of high schoolers' lives. But now, I honestly don't know how to describe it. It wasn't a bad show. It had my mind running around trying to figure out who did it and I still couldn't guess it right. The characters had some depth to them; addy has a habit of twirling her hair when nervous and Bronwyn shakes her legs. I also liked the cinematics and thought they were nice. The plot too was very good. What I didn't like tho, is the lack of innovation it had. The story at this point has been worn out. It was used in 13 reasons why, control Z, and Elite, to name but a few. I also didn't like how they munched on the old stereotypes of the bad boy going for the hard working, good girl, the rich kids' parents don't know him well, the jock who's a closeted gay, like this is 2022, being gay isn't that big of a deal anymore . I didn't like how they didn't address certain elements. Like, Maeve says she went through lukemia, we never see her struggle with it, the bad boy has been gone for a while, we don't exactly see what he's been up to during that time, Addy has been stalked by someone but they don't tell us who it was. My point is, the plot had many holes and it would have been better if they'd have been a little but more creative, I understand that it's difficult when almost every single idea out there has been exploited . I did appreciate the fact that it didn't have much sex or nudity. I feel like Netflix turned this into a norm now for its shows, which is a shame.

Anyway, I recommend this show if you're looking for a quick binge.

Gossip Girl meets 13 Reasons Why
cile-chan18 December 2021
What a surprise! Thought it was just gonna be another cliché teen-centric show disguised as a murder mystery drama. Romance was very much on the sideline and the mystery part was actually really done well and intriguing up until the very last scene. What I really liked the most was the character growth of Addy!

I haven't read the book yet and I know that it's pretty popular, but the thing is if it wasn't for IMDB's recommendation, I never would've known this adaptation existed! It's so underrated and I feel like this would've been a total hit if it was on Netflix. Anyhow I really wish they do a season 2 as the ending was a perfect set-up for it.

Worth watching.
Sleepin_Dragon5 March 2022
When a group of give teenagers head into detention, only four of them come out alive.

It's a bit of a mix between Scream and Thirteen Reasons why, if you're a fan of those shows, you may well enjoy this.

It's a good series, it's very watchable, it is guilty of delivering every single cliche under the sun, of course the central characters are all attractive, of course one is wealthy, of course there's the prom...

One of the issues I had, is that it doesn't really care to do anything particularly different, there's nothing exactly new here, apart from the low count.

It is a little padded in the middle, it was perhaps guilty of being perhaps two episodes too long, the first and last two perhaps the best of the series.

It looks nice, the music is great, it's visually very appealing.

7/10.

An enjoyable watch
nicolerazz7 January 2022
Gives me PLL vibes although I can't help but feel like these characters could have had some more development of their friendships. There were a few other things that I thought could have been done better but I'm really being picky. That being said, it was very enjoyable to watch and I would definitely watch a season 2.

P.s. Sometimes it was hard to watch because these kids made such bad choices.

Modern high school with gossiping and cheating. And a few suspected of murder.
TxMike7 October 2021
The first episode came out today, streaming on Peacock. With the R-rated language and sex encounters it doesn't appear to be targeting teenagers. More of an adult drama. It has the usual common mix of gay and straight relationships and a small time drug dealer. Now I find myself wondering if there will be a gun brought to school.

It features attractive, mostly unknown actors who carry their roles appropriately. No Oscars or Emmys for this group. Viewers who don't enjoy seeing two boys in passionate, romantic embrace should skip this series.

On the first day of school five students get into minor troubles and are held into after-school detention. An incident outside caused the teacher to rush out, just as the local troublemaker takes a drink from the water fountain. A clue might be the paper cup he used. He quickly falls ill from some sort of allergic reaction, they were unable to save him.

So all that happens right away, the mini series appears it will be about the rest of the students and what actually happened, who is hiding what. Police start to investigate, school lockers are searched, the laptop is missing. Really nothing new here but it is interesting to see how they put it all together.

I continued to watch it as a diversion, it sort of grows on you, wondering what the "Murder Club" will do next to find the one responsible. I didn't find that it has that "must watch" feel to it, more of a guilty pleasure, but I did watch it to the end. A bunch of really messed up "high school" students and a few confused parents. ."

Read the book! It's WAY better
jumpinjack1726 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong. The TV show had some good moments that they pulled from the book, and I realize why they changed some things (in order for it to work as a series). But overall, the show was really a subpar version of the book. I feel like the acting was not very believable from most of the cast. I feel like they revealed Cooper being gay WAY too early. That was a big reveal in the book about a third of the way through. I also think they totally got the casting wrong for Bronwyn. Not very believable. I also feel like Nate and Bronwyn's romance was a huge element of the book. And their characters playing them had no chemistry. And then them killing Jake and covering up his murder. Come on! Really? Oh well. Definitely read the book. It's way better.

Different but excellent
f-keys3 November 2021
Completely different plot line than the book (though of course keeps the same gist), but honestly I found it just as enticing and complex. This version gives you more complexity and sympathy for Simon, more of maeve in her own spotlight, and still keeps you guessing til the end. Wonderful cast and production, plus room created to further another storyline!

Breakfast Club murder mystery
SnoopyStyle22 January 2023
It's the first day of the new school year. Five students are given detention. Simon has an online gossip blog and is hated by the other four. Suddenly, he suffers a fatal allergic reaction. It's determined that it's foul play and the other four become prime suspects. Addy is the popular cheerleader. Cooper is the jock. Bronwyn is the brains. Nate is the criminal.

It's the Breakfast Club with a murder mystery. The police interrogation is completely wrong. Anyone who watches TV cop shows would know questioning minor suspects is very problematic nowadays. Of course, it's done to artificially generate tension. That's how the show operates. It pushes buttons. Everybody is a suspect and there is always another twist. Realism is the last requirement of this show. By the way, the title is lying. Everybody lies on this show. The kids keep making mistakes but I'm willing to allow for it. It's frustrating, but it's a very YA show.

I like the first season enough. It has its fun doing all the convoluted twists and turns and teenage drama. At first, I'm ambivalent about the Murder Club. It seems a little stupid for the suspects to gather together, but I do grow to appreciate the Scooby-Doo adjacent premise. The second season is a bit of a repeat as the mystery keeps going. What I do love is episode six with Vanessa Clark. It's the idea of looking at the Murder Club from the outside. The change of view is refreshing. The show lasted two seasons on Peacock. It could have gone one more, but I won't miss it either.

Does not meet any of the book's standards
definitelynotella10 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I, personally, adored the book One Of Us Is Lying. It was suspenseful, kept you on the edge of your seat, and had that 'must read' feel, where you absolutely had to know what was going to happen next. While this book was a mystery, it was quite focused on the characters, with plot points sometimes being out of their control. This allowed the book to focus on what they thought, what they felt, who they were, and how they could get themselves out of the mess they were in. The show, however, is unable to meet any of the standards set by the book.

Like I said earlier, the book was mainly focused on the characters. Reading the book, you get to know everyone, from our main four to the side characters. The show is consistently fails on this front. From minor issues (the wardrobe of characters going completely against the majority of their character and characterisation, mainly noticeable in Nate and Bronwyn) to major personality changes, the characters don't quite seem like 3 dimensional people, and more like the archetypes that the book set out to subvert. I could talk for hours about this, but I'll try to be concise with a few examples.

Bronwyn - In the books, Bronwyn is smart, yes, but that is only a single facet of her personality. She's a bit snarky, knows who she is, and can be determined, even in the face of lots of stress. In the show, her character seems to be boiled down to simply a smart girl who had trouble in class and cheated a bit. She doesn't have much personality, and is far less compelling than the books.

Ashton - She was one of the biggest influencers in Addy's redemption arc. As Addy's older sister, she served as an example of what could go wrong by simply following their mother's plans, and had opinions about Addy and her life while still caring for her unconditionally. She was instrumental in Addy's breakup with Jake, encouraging her to tell him the truth, and then helping her reinvent herself after their ensuing breakup. She put the pressure on Addy to do better, to be herself, to reflect on what Jake was putting her through and whether or not that was healthy in any way. In the show, she does not exist, and I can't get over it.

Now, aside from the characters, the other main appeal of the book was the plot. It was enticing, confusing, and drew you in to the point where you had to know what happened next. The book revealed information in a very drawn out way, tugging on your imagination until finally flipping all your preconceptions on their heads. For example, Simon hasn't posted the week before his death. At all. No spoilers, none of that. Detention happens, he dies, and later, the police find the posts. In addition to that, the seeming confessions that plague our main four are not posted on About That, as that gives away far too much of the plot. No, they're posted on a non-descript tumblr blog, and emailed from a secure network anonymously to students. When the death happens, we don't think that it was necessarily a murder (well, aside from the entire book existing), simply just a mixup, a sordid accident that's no one's fault. When the secrets begin to come out, you're shocked, because it was unexpected - a twist that couldn't have reasonably been predicted. In the show, all of this suspense that builds with the revelations, and how they find their way into the world, is immediately cut off with Simon's earlier posts. It completely misses the point of the books, and prevents you from getting into them. If we can guess everyone's secrets from the offset, why bother watching? After all, we can guess what happens.

In other words, the show is a pale imitation of a brilliant book. Missing the point of the plot, missing the point of the characters, it seems to have been created as a cash grab with little-to-no appropriate knowledge of what happened in the book, or what made it great. While its not a bad series, I would say that reading the book is a far better idea if you're interested in a good story, compelling characters, or actual suspense. Still, I won't fault anyone for watching this - the premise is pretty classic, and echoes other stories that we know and love.

A disaster
TheReview22century9 March 2022
Classic Netflix series for teenagers made on a very low budget. Simultaneously with this series I watched The AfterParty on Apple TV +. Two completely different worlds, Afterparty is beautiful while this series is a real disaster in every respect. I don't expect the same quality of Apple TV Plus products, since Apple can afford a theoretically unlimited budget, but at least a minimum of commitment I do. Horrible!

It deserves a higher rating

Great combination between the Breakfast Club, Gossip Girls and Pretty Little Liars. Basically, it Breakfast Club with a murder twist, and I love it. No idea why people rate it so low, it deserves at least an average 8. The actors were cast good, it could have been better, but well...they play teens, and I've seen worse.

Not bad at all
ApostolisK11 October 2021
It's a pretty good show...though it's very different from the book and I'd say worse. Most things get revealed very quickly and it kinda makes the story less interesting and with less suspense. The only thing that the series makes you care about is whodunit. The book made me curious to find out what the secrets were. And also the pov of every character in the book makes the characters more interesting and relatable.

Though the book was far more exciting, the show is still really good. It's awesome to see these characters and their stories come to life, but you don't have to read the book to enjoy it. I don't get the bad ratings. The show is very entertaining.

Easy binge. Great if you like high school shows.
fimleikastjarna21 October 2021
Somehow this show was trying too hard and missed the mark. It should have been great; the music, camerawork, original book etc are all supposed to be great in theory but feel forced in practice. The show doesn't really flow, it cringy some of the time and the acting could be better. It is however a perfectly fine rainy day binge. The whole thing is mildly exciting and definitely beautiful to watch; the sets, actors and costumes are all easy on the eye. As a fan of high school shows and novels I was happy about the show but a bit disappointed. The book was awesome. I however did like the changes that the show made to the storyline. Both stand well on their own. Neither was a murder mystery to me, the solution was obvious from the start but it was nice to see it play out.

This could have been great and it's mediocre at best
charlotteclaireperin7 October 2021
I hate the "book was better" argument. But there is no other way to describe the feeling I have watching the first few episodes. With shows like "Young Royals", "Sex Education" and "American Vandal" going around, this show screams lowest possible effort.

The book kept me on the edge of my seat, unpeeling secrets with clear set up. Those set up revelations are dropped as exposition in the first 30 minutes of the first episode. In the book we are constricted to the four central characters POV, limiting our knowledge to what they know.

On characters. Except for Addy and Cooper (half of your main cast of characters) I feel they got it wrong. I'm glad they look somewhat like teenagers (Young Royals did this to perfection). Unlike a lot of commentors; I don't care that they cast Cooper (a presumed white character) as a black, because the actor does a good job portraying the feeling Cooper's character. Addy's casting is perfect. But then we get to- Bronwyn: The actress falls completely flat for me in selling Bronwyn's character. Bronwyn is a funny, determined character. I get determined but that cheekiness is lost on her. She was my favourite character and I found myself disinterested (Also her wardrobe is another crime).

Nate: Oh Nate, fan favourite, honestly the actor is doing his best and I like his performance, but the character is ruined with his wardrobe. He doesn't look like a juvenile delinquent and more like an Old Navy model. What are those clothes? The only rebelious thing is his acting and for the heartrob bad boy that was promiced, it's seriously lacking.

This story is extremely character driven, and the show has created such a bland version of it. I'm not asking for some "Euphoria" edits either. The story gave me a strong "Young Royals" and "American Vandal" vibe, with colourfull characters and set up. This show feels like something Disney Channel would have given a little bit more thought too, but also not.

It feels underdeveloped and rushed. I can't bite into anything it is giving me.

They are disgarding some plot elements and even adding new events, but it doesn't feel enhancing. They toned this down so much.

I never write reviews but I wanted to get my thoughts out there and view others opinion.

The books are always better
Brina17x22 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If I was watching this without have read the books, then I know I would be giving this a higher rating. But, because I have read them, it's hard to move past the major changes. One of the main ones being the Maeve and Janae (before anyone jumps on me, no I'm not against lesbians) I just feel as though it's tried very hard to fit all the right standards of modern society, without realising that most of the second book is about Maeve and Luis. Amongst this claim, there are others that follow in regard to in diverting away from the original book. I will always choose the book first, but for what it's worth, the show is very enjoyable and I hope to see it somehow come back round to the books more and also for it to be able to get a second season.

Why change a great thing?
brookenichole-9805422 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of Us Is Lying is the laziest written show I may have ever seen. I tried to give it a chance but the amount of changes were too drastic to handle. Not to mention they got rid of Louis, Ashton, and Eli.

The cast was awful. I didn't like any of them. Addy's character had no redemption since she just went back to her "controlling" boyfriend. Bronwyn honestly annoyed me and her acting was mediocre. Cooper had so much anger that never made sense. And Nate was just a huge disappointment. Not to mention the relationship between the four was disjointed.

Maeve and Janae were terrible as well.

I actually really liked Jake unlike in the book. He didn't seem controlling at all and have any capabilities of being a psychopath. This is where this show has a problem of telling not showing.

And that ending was awful. Jake getting shot and Simon didn't want to kill himself? I literally laughed out loud when the evidence was on an XBOX. Are you serious?! The book is genius compared to this awful show.

I believe they should remake this with actually using the book this time.

My question is: if there's a book out there with every bit of detail mapped out for you, then why don't you use it?
