This was bad....really bad
Otte114 October 2022
This is a skip for anyone over the age of 14. It uses the Jason Bourne lost memory and could possibly be a spy, criminal or soccer dad...who knows and people are trying to kill him. The director chose to go with shaky cam for ALL the action scenes. I do not mind shaky cam to promote tension or give the feel of what it is like to be fighting someone...but this shaky cam was used to disguised everythingincluding not haviing a good story. So many illogical scenes like people firing automatic weapons from point blank range(multiple times) and not even grazing the target. Double-digit ex machina scenes. A female character in a very intense action movie where she is killing people in hand to hand and gun and yet makeup and hair does not even have a smear. And do not get me started on Nick Nolte who looked and sounded worse than Weekend at Bernies (after he died). This is just sadness.

Low budget is not an excuse
Xieger3 October 2022
This movie has B/A list actors yet the script and some scenes are awful. Completely cliché and disjointed at the same time. Budget is not an excuse. There are action movies that have way lower budget and were at least interesting if not gripping: Hardcore Henry, Upgrade, The Raid (only 1million), etc. I've even seen better stuff from Youtube creators. Josh Duhamel should just stick to romantic comedies and light hearted stuff like the Mighty Ducks. He hardly felt dangerous or menacing in action roles. Abbie Cornish's acting was also was disinterested and looked like she was just in for the paycheck.

A perfect example of poor filmmaking.
Top_Dawg_Critic2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Josh Duhamel certainly carried this film the best he could with what he had to work with, but he needed better backing to be the action lead star he deserves to be. The writing and directing was that of a 1980's amateur-hour film. Constant cheesy slow-mo shots with the most tedious cat and mouse game ever - don't even get me started on the ridiculous dialogue.

Actor turned filmmaker Sam Macaroni, who has an astonishing 89 directing credits - all mostly short films and TV movies, still hasn't learned how to properly fill in any runtime that's over an hour long. Along with the Blue Bloods series and a handful of short films writer Van B. Nguyen, they stretched out every scene to the max with little meat in the story that had long dragged out scenes and mostly unnecessary dialogue.

The action shots were all boilerplate cliched, and all the back and forth cat and mouse narrative became very annoying fast. An example is when Omar Chaparro's character Eddie wasted 5 minutes of film talking to the doctor to get Cain to remember; ok we get it, just say "get it done or else". You'll see that issue of squeezing every scene to its fullest throughout the entire normally comfortable 91 min runtime, of which felt much longer due to the lack of any real captivating narrative. And that's not including the many cheesy slow-mo's that added another wasted 10-15 mins of runtime for no reason.

It's all a boilerplate by the numbers story that's mainly filler with very little substance. All the attempts at any twists in the story were predictable and also cliched. This entire mess should've been cut down to a 1 hour TV movie length at best, if not into a short film.

The only redeeming qualities this film had was the acting, some decent action choreography by Duhamel, and an adequate score - for a B film. It was great to see the legendary Nolte, but even he needed better cast direction to speed up his slow and slurred dialogue, because one can only take so much before they start yelling "spit it out already".

Had the writer and director at least consulted a seasoned filmmaker for some much needed changes, this film would've been much more watchable. But as is, it's a very generous 5/10, all going to the underrated Duhamel for another convincing lead performance (he was a great lead in Bandit as well).

How bad can it get?
beechguy-3438212 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie caught my attention right up to the point where Duhamel was caught off guard by 2 thugs that opened fire with automatics and he someone manages to miss around 50 rounds while taking out the 2 in front of him. Then, immediately after that, 2 more thugs open up doors behind him and lay out ever more rounds in a hallway no wider than about 5 feet, yet he STILL manages to not get hit by one bullet. Stopped watching after that. Yikes is all I have to say. I really can't imagine how anyway can overlook this aspect as it doesn't even try to not look stupid. Hopefully others come to their senses and turn this off.

Netflix this is why you're in trouble
Chris_Mac_2515 October 2022
This type of movie is why Netflix is in trouble. They fund this garbage, throwing money at a terrible script and awakening Nick Nolte from his annual hibernation. Poor old Nick is slurring and carrying on, completely unconvincing in a Mickey Rourke style cameo of ludicrous casting. Omar puts in a solid bad guy act but his pony tail wig distracts. Abbey looks mildly embarrassed and Josh Duhamel looks like his misses the big budget Transformers days when the catering cost more than the budget for this entire film. Some laugh out loud bad moments, so bad I was looking for Damien Chapa's name as the director.

Painful...
mattias-420-82121915 October 2022
I agree with an earlier reviewer: I'm not sure I'll make it through to the end. 20 minutes in and I already have a strong suspicion that this might be the worst movie I've ever watched.

This movie is absolutely terrible in every way. Plot, conversation, acting... Everything. I'll give you an example:

In one scene the main character is having a flashback. He's in a (terrible as usual) conversation with the bad guy, Eddie. Eddie is holding a glas of tequila in his left hand and his hair is up in a ponytail. Cut to another angle and all of a sudden his hair is down and the glas is gone. Cut back again and the ponytail and glas is back. Cut again. No ponytail and he takes a mouthful of tequila from the bottle. What the...? It's amazing to watch all the inconsistencies in this production. They are everywhere and they are hilarious.

I won't give anything away, but the end leaves me with a feeling that the producers of this mess will hit us with a sequel. I'm looking forward to it, but at the same time I don't think they will be able to raise enough money for it. I would love to see it. I haven't been this entertained in a while.

Was there a script or did they make the plot up as they went along? Was the budget over or under 5 bucks? Was this flick made by 4th graders? Did they make it this lousy just to win some kind of award? The questions are piling up minute by minute.

BTW: Did you know that the point of a satelite phone is that it's easily traceable? I just learned this.

I urge you to watch this movie. Watch it as a comedy/parody, not as an action flick. It should be used at every film school as an example on what NOT to do.

A note to some reviewers: You know that the average of 1-10 stars is 5 stars. Right? How can you give a movie you dislike as much as you say a 5 star review? Your words doesn't match your rating.

7.5 minutes in... ... now 28 mins in...
jasonaldrich-8723914 October 2022
And idk if I'm gonna make it. Thought about turning it off when Nick Nolte's skeleton came on screen and tried to speak words... at least that's what I think it was trying to do.

Maybe I'll change my rating if I finish it, but this is as low as I'm going becuz it's still never gonna be as bad as The Animal was.

As for the movie itself, someone said something about 1 A-lister in the movie... who is that?? I think Josh Duhamel makes these terrible movies now just for personal entertainment. It's like the people who make the Sharknado's, they all knew all 11 of the movies were trash, but they did it anyway. That's the 2022 Josh Duhamel, everyone.

Update: This is a complete disaster of epic proportions, and all I need to say is, NO POLICE!?!?!? It's a hospital, right??? Machine guns shot, dead bodies everywhere, bare handed murder in the kitchen... holy moly.

Update #2: Changed rating from 2 to 1. Still have a half hour left and it's unbearable. If I was actually at the movies I would've walked out... so it's just as bad as The Animal. Lol.

Ghost of Nick Nolte
kryan-8903315 October 2022
Should've been named The Ghost of Nick Nolte. My husband and I thought this was 80's satire. This was the WISH version of a Lifetime movie, but aired during those god awful Christmas in July things.🎄

Some of the fight scenes were ok except when, after hand to hand combat, nobody's hair was even out of place. The shooting scenes though, lol What a joke. All of the shots that were fired and miraculously missed Josh and then he fires twice and kills them. The inconsistencies throughout this whole movie are comical.

How many kitchen trays were harmed in this film? That's what I really wanna know.

Pretty sure Nolte did this for free
staunton-gary9 October 2022
Blackout, I went into this blind, not in the drunk sense, I didn't read anything about it or any of the reviews. If it wasn't for Josh Duhamel this would have been below average. Having said that, I do believe that Josh Duhamel went into this blind too, maybe not the same blind state as myself. Abbie Cornish spent too much time looking emotionless. Omar Chaparro (Eddie) is obviously a fan of Jordi Mollà's portrayal of Hector Juan Carlos 'Johnny' Tapia in Bad Boys 2. Definitely a B grade movie with a budget to match. Some of the action scenes were done well. The director should have taken some direction from a more experienced director, the writer, a little lazy and relies too much stock standard cliche's. That aside, it is watchable and I would recommend it.

Amaaaaaazingly bad movie
default-2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Totally rubbish movie: -music score repetative and annoying, its like the took it from an 80's video game and pasted it in this movie without caring if it fits or not -illogical plot with incosistent twists. Bad guys become good guys and vice versa without any good reason -bad action scenes with slow motion to fill the gaps, bad guys shot millions of bullets at close range bad manage to hit our nerves instead of the good guy -dialogues tha are gonna make you laugh with the cringynesss -movie fights that are badly edited and choreographed and totally ignore the laws of phisics.

-bad actor performance from all actors. Maybe they have not read the script before signing up or maybe they needed the check and they didn't care but they all seem like they are reading it from an auto-cue and they don't actually believe any of the words cvoming out of their mouths.

Now you may ask why I finished it? Well I was folding clothes for my wife which is boring and I thought that I need to do something more boring to feel better. Well mission accomplished!

Mexican Hospital Mayhem!!!
zardoz-1324 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing about the Netflix thriller "Blackout" from its generic title to its amnesiac hero who dodges trigger-happy hordes of gunmen after him is remotely original. Typically, when people think about amnesia epics, Matt Damon's popular Jason Bourne film franchise comes to mind. Long before "The Bourne Identity" (2002) and its four sequels, filmmakers had been cranking out thrillers about heroes and heroines suffering from amnesia with pistol-packing killers at their heels. "Fear in the Night" (1946), "36 Hours" (1964), "The Man Called Noon" (1973), "Total Recall" (1990), "Clean Slate" (1994), "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996), "Memento" (2000), and "Mulholland Drive" (2001) rank as some of the best action-oriented amnesia epics. If you've seen any of these, not only are you acquainted with the premise but also the gauntlet of obstacles our protagonist must hurdle. Like most amnesiac heroes, John Cain (Josh Duhamel of "The Transformers" movies) awakens in "Blackout" to find himself sprawled on his back in a Mexican hospital bed, with his loyal wife, Anna (Abbie Cornish of "Sucker Punch"), hovering at his elbow. Our hero's adversaries are heavily armed henchmen who failed to liquidate him during a careening car chase that ended with Cain smashing up his vehicle, wiping his memory, and landing in a hospital. Neither "Guest House" director Sam Macaroni nor "Boyhood" scenarist Van B. Nguyen let the momentum slacken in this nimble, bullet-riddled actioneer that piles up a double-digit body count!

Hollywood makes two kinds of amnesia movies. The first kind are those where only the hero is in the dark. Memory loss plagues him. You know more about him than he remembers about himself. The second kind are those that keep both hero and audience in the dark. Everything is a mystery which must be unraveled. "Blackout" qualifies as the first kind. Macaroni and Nguyen share details with the audience about Cain's past. Moreover, the opening gambit in "Blackout" constitutes the set-up. Cain has fled to his house in Arizona near the Mexican border. Cartel gunmen have trailed him. After arming an explosive gadget on his property, he escapes via a tunnel under his residence linked to a city electrical conduit tunnel. An explosion moments later destroys his house. The blast incinerates one of the intruders. Alas, this only slows down his enemies. Intercepting Cain on the highway, they devastate his car with a hail of machine gunfire. Cain loses control of the sedan, and the vehicle tumbles like a giant log. Suddenly, he finds himself wrestling with a hospital orderly. Cain's doctor, Dr. Garza (Jose Sefami of "Miss Bala"), assures Cain that he will recover his memory.

Meantime, in Arizona, at the site of Cain's demolished dwelling, a team of DEA agents led by Ethan McCoy (Nick Nolte of "Extreme Prejudice") rummage through the wreckage. We learn Cain has been AWOL for several days. Mind you, neither McCoy nor the DEA knew about Cain's secret underground passage. McCoy assembles a team to rescue Cain. Eventually, we learn Cain had infiltrated a cartel. Cain's long-time partner Eddie (Omar Chaparro of "Aztec Warrior") arrives at the hospital. He suspects that Cain may have double-crossed him because the latter stole $20 million. Before he can kill his old partner, Eddie must know where Cain stashed a suitcase. This particular suitcase is reminiscent of the attaché case in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (1994). It contains a Pandora's box of cartel secrets. Eddie locks the hospital down to prevent Cain from escaping. He deploys his henchmen to prowl the premises like predators.

Virtually the entire film occurs in the single setting of the hospital. Nevertheless, "Blackout" is far from claustrophobic. Skillfully, Macaroni and Nguyen parcel out details about Cain that shed light on his shady shenanigans with the Cartel as well as the DEA and CIA. The dialogue scenes propel the plot forward rather than slow it down. Macaroni stages both fireworks and fisticuffs scenes with flair and spontaneity. He lenses the hallway gunfights in graceful slow-motion. Spent shell casings somersault sideways from submachine gun ejection ports. Muzzle flashes erupt as adversaries trigger streams of bullets that ricochet noisily off metal surfaces. A knuckle-smashing clash in an elevator qualifies as one of the best elevator fights since the David Dave Bautista movie "Fina Score" (2018). Naturally, our hero and heroine fare better at hitting their targets than Eddie and his killers. Rather than looking clean-cut, Duhamel resembles the Marvel Comics' character Reed Richards, with his grizzled temples and piratical beard. Nick Nolte spends most of his time chewing out his subordinates. The twist ending is a neat touch as the filmmakers bring everything full circle. As villains go, Eddie is far more charming than cruel. However, nothing is a cake walk for Cain in "Blackout." Clocking in at 81 agile minutes, ten of which the end credits take up, "Blackout" emerges as a suspenseful cat & mouse melodrama with Cain, Eddie, and Anna swapping lead with each other.

Bourne on a Budget?
A_Different_Drummer2 October 2022
Let's put our cards on the table. The Bourne story (killer with memory loss) is one of my all-time faves. I actually read the "hardcover" when it first came out (if you are not familiar with that term, Google it!). The movie trilogy is top-ranked on my list of the greatest films of all time (see below). So, off the top, I really really WANTED to love this film. But, alas, Fate had other plans. As I have explained in my other reviews, one of the hallmarks of a low-budget indie is the gratuitous use of loud music to "fill in the awkward pauses" between the weak writing and bad acting. BLACKOUT has plenty of gratuitous loud music. Another giveaway is the use of recycled actors. Plenty of those here also. But what about the ACTION scenes, you ask? The good news is there are plenty of those too. And it looks like that is where most of the budget ended up. In fact, at the 35 minute mark, protagonist Duhamel escapes a killer using the signature judo move from the grand finale of REDBELT 2008 (also on my list of the best all-time films). "A" for effort. "B-" for result. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))

Why?
xixliesent19 October 2022
For a paycheck, to fill a content void, just cuz?

I thought this movie was a joke at first, like tongue-in-cheek comedy or perhaps a twist where he's still in a coma because the shootout scenes are so outlandish that they cant possibly be taken seriously. But.... alas.... its for real.

I cannot think of a single redeeming thing to say. Except maybe credit for the single location? I guess? But its painfully apparent that nobody cared. The writer? Didn't care. The actors? Didnt care. The director? Didn't care. The Editor? Didn't care. Nobody wanted this to be made, but it was because Netflix has a content quota and we're all to blame.

Nick Nolte pays some bills
ykjdh13 October 2022
The only reason I can think this got made is because Nick Nolte has bills to pay. A few decent fight scenes and short running time but still silly. Reminds me of Tim Olymphant doing a bad version of an action star in Hitman. To think Nick Nolte, one of better actors in the past century is in this makes me wonder if he knew what he was doing.

This is nothing more than a B movie action rip off of Jason Bourne. There's a reason no one pays for this in cinemas. If it's bad enough, Netflix will pick it up for streaming. Giving this garbage even 2 stars would be kind but that's because I grew up watching Nick Nolte movies. Back when he used to do good movies.

Low buget relying on 1 A-lister to help sell:
ctufan243 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Bad writing, dialogue & acting. Only the main character is the only good actor in this film... so many things that don't make any sense in this film such as: #1 All this gun fighting going on inside a U. S. hospital yet where is the security or law enforcement!?! #2 Certain hospital wings have staff in the hallways yet others are completely empty. #3 The scene involving the DEA agent who sounds like he's straining every time he speaks stating in the conference room that "their on foreign soil" when it comes to implications to extracting the main character Cain & later on stating that to the main character is in a Mexican hospital when on the phone with him... wtf! Their in Tuscan AZ!

Choreographer, screen writer cinematographer needs to be fired
marses6512 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Its awaste of opportunity. The story line is not new, yes, even avengers are not new, but they bring something new into it with good storylines and etc. But this one is just plain dumb. The word "f@&k" is used just to keep a character or lines feel tough on a wrong timing and projected weakly instead. But the worst was, every shooting scene in the straight hallway which none of them managed to put a bullet through him, just threw me off..its plain terrible and not logical...the end scene, the guy just got shot at his arm..he could grab a gun from behind the car once the went out from the car, and shoot them from the back... and again, cuss words are used just to make the script fancy..

a failure attempt not becoz of the stars, but the fight scenes were whack and cinematography too.

ramfat5 October 2022
One minute and 50 seconds. Think you can stand watching this atrocity for longer? Take the challenge! See how long you can last.

There is no need for a script, or a director, or a screenplay, or an editor, or anyone with any semblance of talent. Just a guy with a cellphone and the video-editing program that's included in Windows 10.

See it's all about the story, the emotions, and the overly dramatic music. If we can just sew together various parts of different corpses to create a new kind of movie, the people will hold their noses as they watch it slowly fall apart, then devour the rotting meat.

I really want to know why...
Hughmanity1 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
...why did this movie get made? Who funded it? Was it some rich person's pet script that they desperately wanted to see get made?

The plot is the fairly standard cliche of someone having amnesia and trying to piece together who he is and why everyone is trying to kill him (eg Jason Bourne). It's a workable premise but that's the best thing I can say about this movie.

Josh Duhamel and Abbie Cornish are decent actors but I've never seen them in an action movie and it showed. Nick Nolte is brought out of retirement and should have been left to pasture. The rest are B-list including director Sam Macaroni who is apparently also known for different genres including National Lampoon and viral commercials.

The dialogue is terrible, the sets are low budget (the entire thing takes place in a hospital where multiple shootings take place yet everyone still just goes about their business like nothing is happening...oh and there is a drug lab in it too), the McGuffin that is the supposed focus of everyone's search is ridiculous, and the gunplay scenes are some of the worst ever shot. Bad guys with automatic weapons letting loose a hail of bullets from about 10 feet away from our hero, in a hallway, and nothing hits. Wow these guys are inaccurate.

I had to view it as satire just to make it through, but once I started to mock it and laugh it became more fun.

Got money? That's enough for me. -Netflix
rebelvuepro14 October 2022
Apparently, Netflix is willing to enlist ANY movie as long as the producers have enough money to close the deal with it.

This is a perfect example of the above. I could barely hit the 20 minute mark before I said to myself: "you know you do have much better things to do with your time right now", so I stopped watching before it got painful.

The fighting and shooting scenes in the beginning have absolutely no logic. At times, I really believed the screenplay was written by some kid with a mental handicap. I'm a video content creator and this was impossible to watch.

The movie is a TOTAL fail just to conclude.

Another one of "those" movies
sebring-9262817 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What are "those" movies? They seem to be the norm now, we've seen so many recently. Lots of shoot-em-up action with no real logic (the automatic weapons at point blank range totally missing their target) and then at the end.....no answers or real wrap-up. This movie leaves you somewhat hanging. The main characters just end up running down the street away from one SUV with DEA agents, even though there were 4 black SUV's that just pulled up plus a helicopter full of agents landing on the roof. Another lame movie, not worth the time invested. Who is making these movies these days? Next generation? If so.....we're in big trouble for entertainment value. And does Netflix only purchase poorly rate movies because they're cheaper? So disappointed.

More than two minutes
shoretalk15 October 2022
One can never offer a fair review of anything in less than two minutes but one reviewer placed one star on their viewing of less than two minutes of this "Bourne Want To Be."

Well, the film kept my attention for it's entire length even throwing some curve ball surprises along the way.

However, be prepared for another film whose hero has superhero recovery power that will challenge most viewers acceptance of the film as anything other than pure fiction and escapism popcorn. But, frankly this film's script writers and director no doubt knew that was what they were offering us in another good guys bad guys or bad guys are good guys or well watch the film to figure it out.

Yes, other than an aged Nick Nolte, this film's cast is not red carpet superstars and many of the secondary cast clearly needs some acting classes. The key characters (if you watch more than 2 minutes) will pull you into the thriller as bullets fly all around.

If you are looking for a Friday night flick that takes you away from reality and has a surprise or two this isn't a bad option. Now, I won't watch it again but I know how it ends.

Were they were doing this for free?
cometmolefi12 October 2022
Wow, I never knew a movie could be this bad. I was totally shocked in the credits that there was even a director because clearly there wasn't any need for one. This was probably just a bunch of bored people who met one day and decided to pass time by shooting a movie in 24 hours or less.

I can't honestly think of any plausible reason why those A/B listers stole 90 minutes of my life. The acting was substandard to say the least, the storyline very disappointing and the sound too disruptive throughout the movie.

This is a perfect example of a good idea gone horribly wrong. And that's all it should have remained as, an idea not a movie.

Pathetic
albertval-6956013 October 2022
There have been permutations and iterations of the film's storyline which have been executed more skilfully and creatively with much a better cinematic outcome. This one is a far cry.

For one, the plot doesn't attract my attention. And it's going around in circles the confined setting of a hospital making it worse. I wanted very much to see the ending to find out the true identity of Cain and what he does for a living but prudence dictated that it wouldn't really matter because this is such a pathetic film.

One thing going for it is that some of the fight scenes are well-executed. I didn't know until now that John Duhamel could kick some ass. Ruefully, the action scenes become repetitive after a while. And Nick Nolte isn't in a good place as far as this movie is concerned. He is pathetic, too. His character Ethan is always whining about something in that high-pitched voice of his.

Why?
Indian_Analyst12 October 2022
Other than the suspense about the contents of the suitcase, there is nothing to keep us glued to the movie, especially when the plot is somewhat predictable. The entire story should have been an episode for some other crime-based fiction tv/web series. I think by portraying the character of John Cain, Josh Duhamel is marketing himself as a possible replacement for Bruce Willis. After watching the movie, the following questions keeps coming to our mind. What is the purpose of making this movie? Why all these eminent actors signed up for such silly movie? Why Netflix telecasted it? And ultimately, why did you waste my time?
