- Emma makes sense of Kit's use of a question mark tattoo on women he would later go on to murder. Her flashback is of Amy Walker with a question mark tattoo. Pete suggests it was not a heart Kit was tattooing on Karen but a question mark and the needle slipped. They realise Kit meant to kill her and instead fell in love with her. Pete suggests memories formed in a traumatic state can only be recovered in a traumatic one. He suggests the trauma of witnessing Amy Walker's dead body has caused the memory blackout. Jay brings prescription drugs that Jess used to take and that he also found in Tina's room. Another disturbing link between the two girls. Emma receives a visit from Lisa, Pete's wife who accuses her of having an affair with Pete. Emma reassures her she's not and digs into Lisa background as a Saint Jerome House girl. Lisa reveals the true darkness is an exploitation ring, girls at the home are harvested for their eggs for fertility treatment led by Bodie Lord. The girls are made sterile often from the invasive procedures. Emma warns Rose about her father but has no idea of the reaction she sets off in Rose whose advances Emma rejects and who later reaches out to Mary's tipline on Karen Miller. Jake Barlow recognises John Tyler from a facial composite for a man wanted for a rape in Missouri. Mary calls John on the rape and he warns her not to do anything stupid - not now he's found Karen. Mary hates herself but stays silent. However Jake reports the rape and John goes dark on Mary. Emma has no idea that every text she sends to Tom is being read by John who pretends to reply as Tom and arranges to meet Emma. John invites himself back to hers where Emma discovers he has Tom's phone and her cat's missing collar. In her attempt to escape him, traumatic memories unlock and we see the entirety of the Minnesotan murder scene and that it was Theresa who was attempting to murder Karen in the snow, just before she gives birth.
- Emma and Pete discuss the question marks tattoos that Kit Parker gave to his victims. She tells Pete that he saw the question mark as significant, something he gave to a person with whom he wanted to share his true self: his victims. She tells Pete about her dream where she sees Amy Walker, with one of those tattoos, lying on their apartment floor, dying. She says that in the dream she is the one holding the hammer. Pete talks about the tattoo which Parker gave her, a heart with their names in it. He suggests that it was originally a question mark, that Parker intended her to be one of his victims, but that he fell in love with her and decided to spare her. Pete tells her that sometimes, to understand trauma, you have to be back in a similar situation. He also warns her that if she was involved in Parker's crimes that he won't be able to protect her.
Emma meets with Jay, who says that he found syringes in the belongings of his missing friends. Lisa Guillory visits Emma and warns her to stay away from Pete, for her own sake. Emma presses her about what happened at St Jerome's, believing that what happened when Lisa was there is still happening to girls. Lisa eventually tells Emma that Bodie Lord and the group home had been harvesting the eggs of teenage girls and that many of them developed complications from the procedure. She tells Emma that their names are still there in the room where it happened.
Jake Barlow shows his mother a composite sketch of a rape suspect from Missouri and speculates that it might be the man who tried to work with them. John calls Mary and tells her that he found Kare Miller, but doesn't tell her where.
Emma goes to St Jerome's and sneaks into the attic where she finds medical equipment and the names of numerous girls carved into a post. Rose shows up. She says that she's been following Emma and that she's glad that Tom disappeared. Rose confesses that she loves Emma and kisses her. Emma has a flashback of her kissing Theresa Barlow as Kit looks on uncomfortably. Emma tells Rose that she cares for her but not like that. When she tries to tell Rose about what her father has been doing Rose becomes angry and leaves. Later, she looks up information on Karen Miller and finds Mary Barlow's name.
Emma calls Tom, not knowing that he's been abducted, and leaves a message saying that she's unraveled what's going on at St Jerome's. She begins to remember what happened to Amy Walker more fully. Heavily pregnant, Karen had come home to find a bloody hammer on the floor of their apartment. After picking it up she saw Amy Walker lying there, dying, her head bashed in. Kit came up and tried to calm her. Theresa emerges from another room, slightly bloody, and begs Karen for help. She takes the hammer from her and drags her out of the apartment as Kit rages. In the hallway, Karen's water breaks.
At the motel, John uses Tom's phone to arrange a night out with Emma. He then sees an alert for himself on Tom's phone and decides to shave his head and dump his car. John and Emma drink and play pool at a bar. When Tom doesn't show, Emma leaves an angry message for him on his phone. They then return to Emma's place to continue drinking. Things become charged when John asks about Emma's daughter and begins probing her about her past. Feeling that he's gone too far, John excuses himself to go to the bathroom, where he silently rages. Emma begins texting Tom. As she sends the texts she hears Tom's phone chiming. She finds it in John's briefcase, along with her kitten's collar. John emerges, saying that he had been intending to leave until she discovered the phone. He confesses that although he was convicted of raping two women, he actually assaulted fourteen. He attack Emma, pinning her down. But when he reveals that he knows her real name, she head butts him, allowing her to escape. Meanwhile, Mary Barlow arrives in town, having been contacted by Rose. Rose demands money in exchange for Karen's address.
Emma barricades herself in a bedroom as John tries to break in. As this happens, her memories return and she remembers what happened with Theresa. The two of them are driving through the snowy woods, with Theresa insisting that they have to get Karen to the hospital. Karen realizes that this isn't the way to the hospital. Theresa grins maniacally and says that she's been bad. Karen looks at the hammer on Theresa's lap and realizes that while the other woman is bloody, she is uninjured. Karen jumps from the car. Theresa pursues her into the snowy woods with the hammer. Theresa reveals the truth "Before it was you and him, it was me and him." She was Kit's accomplice, the one who killed all those women with him. Theresa is jealous of Karen and the fact that she's pregnant with Kit's child, and thus will always have a piece of him. She pins Karen to the ground, and raises the hammer, intending to kill her and her unborn child. Karen grabs a rock and hits Theresa in the head before escaping. In the present, John breaks through the door and grabs Emma.
