Enjoying it so far
cheekymonkey127528 March 2019
This is my first review but felt the need due to the criticism of the accents/dialect of the character's. Here in the UK we make programmes and films covering a wide range of accents and dialect. We don't adapt these especially so that none UK residents can understand them. They are what they are and represent the whole of the UK. So to slate a programme for the accents of the actors who are representing a particular part of Britain is rude in my book. I wouldn't do that about American shows.

Love a Brit cop drama
louise-westlake3 April 2019
Enjoying this. If you don't understand the accents, put subtitles on. This is a British drama made for a British audience, and we can understand it! Seriously I put on subtitles when I can't understand some drawling US accents

Great Start!!
debbiebarnes6629 March 2019
I really don't understand the negative remarks about this new series.. People seem to watch one episode and pass judgement on a storyline that hasn't even gotten started yet. I really enjoyed the first episode. The characters look real and believable and the underlining storyline, that is developing.

Subplots were a bit much.
jinxieb29 June 2019
I like the series, but found the subplots of the investigator's children a bit distracting, it's almost like the writers were looking to fill some time. As for the criticism of the accents. I had not problem understanding them.

Great Series, thoroughly enjoyed it.
e-j-corby-896-72254626 April 2019
So after reading some of the other reviews and complaints about accents I don't know what everyone's problem is. I am not from the UK I'm Australian and had no problem understanding the accents. Maybe because I watch a lot of TV Series with a wide range of accents but seriously if people are having problems with this maybe they should learn to appreciate that other parts of the world speak differently. Anyway, I really enjoyed the mostly realistic story. I found the characters relatable and likeable. Which speaks to the actors skills. It was an enjoyable journey being convinced one suspect committed the crime and then a different one the next episode. I always thoroughly enjoy a female lead also. Here's hoping there will be a season 2.

It's a good series, with a few frustrations.
Sleepin_Dragon12 January 2021
The Bay, with Series two is on, I thought I'd revisit the first, and I have to be honest, my ideas haven't altered since watching this for the first time. Series one is a bit of a mixed bag, It's hit and miss, a good story, good concept, a shock twist, but irritations, mostly with Lisa. Series two, I binge watched over two days, it had me absolutely engrossed, I loved it.

Morven Christie is a wonderful actress, to begin with, I didn't like Lisa, she's smart, but her tantrums make her appear like a sixteen year old, she puts her job before all else, in series two, she's grown up, and has the balance right. She goes from being a character it's hard to trust, to someone you wish to see succeed.

I really like the setup, I loved the twist in the first episode, that gave Lisa a very different look on the case, the revelation in the concluding episode of series one is also well done. She really is made to pay for her mistakes, and has a hell of a job to get her pride and rank back.

It takes time to warm to the characters, but you will, Lisa is the driving force, Med is a big wet behind the ears.

Beautifully produced and shot, Morecambe has never looked so good.

A good series 7/10.

I am on episode 5 and I love it. Not sure what people are complaining about in regards to the accents. I am Canadian and I have no problems understanding what the characters are saying

Don't waste your time on series 3
ronn21424 March 2022
The first two series were good. Not great, but good. Season 3, has a new lead Marsha Thompson who replaced Morven Christie who left the program after series 2. I'm not sure what they're trying to do here. Thompson is a FLO which means Family Liason Officer. It is her job to maintain contact with victims and their families. The show (IMHO) spends too much time showing how the police care about victims' families and how they help, blah, blah. The victim is a Muslim so we now go through Muslim customs regarding death, and the victims brother who is deaf. It is great when we see the actual police work, which is what we're supposed to see in a police dramashow. But half the show deals with the family and the problems Thompson is going through in her personal life. She is not a likeable person in theis series. Neither is her son or her boyfriends daughter. This show has a lot of unlikeable peole and those are just the good guys! Series three is a big zero I hated it.

Very enjoyable.

Had been looking forward to this as I'm a big fan of Broadchurch type drama and it didn't let me down. Can't wait for the next episode. I didn't have an issue with the accents at all, being from the UK I'm very used to hearing all different accents.

Many Characters Behave Stupidly
aphillips-4305713 November 2019
This series is not great. The good: more crime plot than background subplots; plot comes together in the end for a reasonable resolution; keeps you guessing to the end. The bad: many characters behave very stupidly throughout - hard to believe. My wife and I enjoyed the series, but I'm only giving it a 7.0. Don't expect too much.

Amazing score and scenery
thefinalfrontear22 March 2019
Having watched this drama being filmed in and around Morecambe, last Summer, I was looking forward to seeing how the first episode would look. I wasn't disappointed...the dramatic backdrop of the bay and the brooding soundtrack helped to draw you in. As for the accents...yep...they're northern...but what would you expect to hear.

Lokking forward to seeing how the characters develope over the coming episodes.

Ok but not up to UK Crime Drama standards
nancyldraper7 April 2021
(After viewing the first season/series). It's not a top UK crime drama, but, then again, the UK sets the gold standard for Crime Dramas (or do they call them Police Procedurals). The lead actress seems to have one setting for all the different dramas in her life which limits the credibility of her character. The location is magnificent. The script doesn't leave enough breadcrumbs to allow the viewer to solve the crime before or along with the police so it remains a mystery until the writers decide to declare the criminal. I'm still going to give the first season a 7 (ok) out of 10 and hope for better in the second season. {Crime Drama}

OK, but skip the personal stuff
dklecan18 February 2021
Was watching midsomer murder episode with the same actress Small just the week before. And I finally realized why midsomer is so popular. Midsomer offers a counterpoint of grisly murders with fun, positive family life and humorous work environment (think Sykes).

In Bay, everyone has their problems, bad marriages, alcoholism, illness, parents with dementia. The only difference between police and the victims is that the victims have the added problem of having a murder and murderer.

Luckily I fast forward the protagonist's problems with her ex, mother, and teenage kids....what a bore and stuck with the police procedural. Cuts the episodes in half.

Episode 1 was quite good. Easy to understand if you speak English, and I'm hard of hearing.

STOP AFTER SEASON 2. SEASON 3 IS LIKE A WHOLE DIFFERENT SHOW
daftrancenergy5 December 2022
Morven Christie was amazing in Seasons 1 and 2. I would give the first 2 seasons 9 Stars. I know she wanted to leave the show so when they changed the actress we lost the original children, the mother, the ex and a whole bunch of characters that had been developed in the first couple of seasons. They should have renamed it the Bay 2 or something because Season 3 is the same formula but now you have to relearn half the cast.. It just isn't the same show in Season 3. The shoes of Morven Christie were just too big to fill. Seasons 1 and 2 were excellent but I won't be watching any more new seasons of The Bay.

A melodramatic crime drama set in North West England
Tweekums3 May 2019
Set in the town of Morecambe, this series opens with a woman meeting an unknown man in a bar; shortly afterwards the two have sex in a back alley. The next day it emerges that she is DS Lisa Armstrong. She is called out when two teenaged twins, a brother and sister, have gone missing. It turns out that their step-father was the man she encountered the night before. Rather than tell her seniors she works to hide this fact. As the series continues one body is found but the search for the other continues. Various suspects arise, both inside the children's family and amongst the wider community. Away from the case DS Armstrong's own children are getting involved with some potentially dangerous people.

I must say I found this a fairly mixed series; the central mystery concerning the missing children was fairly gripping but side story featuring our protagonist's children felt like extra drama for the sake of it which just distracted from the main story... it would have been better to have a shorter series rather than padding it with such melodrama. Similarly the one night stand between Armstrong and the step-father was rather too much; as was her behaviour afterwards. The fact that so few of the characters are likeable is also a bit of a problem as it made it hard to care about them. Thankfully the resolution was pretty good; wrapping up the two main storylines. The cast do a solid job bringing these characters to life at least. Overall this felt like an attempt to recreate the success of 'Broadchurch' which misses the elements that made that show (at least series one) such a winner. Overall a decent enough crime series that wasn't quite as good as I hoped.

Excellent!
yutko200430 May 2019
I binged on the show. Couldn't stop watching. Some of the reviewers complained about the accent, or not being as good as Broadchurch. About the accent...put subtitles as I did. And about comparing to Broadchurch, I think it was as good. Why compare? Just enjoy a show. Nothing is new under the horizon, but the story was good, characters were believable and had a bit of enjoyment to know that even in a police family it can happen.... Watch it! It is good!

Giving this a 7. 8's for season 1 and 2, and a 5 for season 3.
lostfan200917 March 2022
I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, and even when I heard they were recasting the lead, I still had high hopes for season 3. I've liked Marsha Thomason in other series and thought she would be a good fit. But I was wrong. Not her as an actress, but the character they decided to create for her. Season 3 is just a total mess. She's not good at her job, not good with her kids, and not good with her partner and partner's daughter. As an example ( there are dozens). In one scene, she gets her nose bloodied, and instead of cleaning up her face, and changing her shirt to protect her kids and new family from seeing her like that, she just rolls into dinner late bleeding and with blood on her clothes. It's all so "look at me". In another scene, after complaining she can't connect with her partners' kid, the kid tries to engage her in a conversation, for the first time, and she just runs her off and then sighs as if she is bothered. It just goes on and on at home and work. She's not good at anything, including simple things like talking to people.

Watch seasons 1 and 2, and pretend the series ends there.

Forget Season 3
vintagegeek-9746518 April 2022
Season 1 and 2 where great. Season 3 is a total mess. In Season 3 Each show pretty much rehashes the same discussions and arguments of the previous episodes. There never really seems to be progress until the last one. Hope season 4 is thought through.

Not bad, may get better
mitchamhobbit23 March 2019
Watched this expecting not to enjoy or understand it, based on other reviews. It is not bad viewing, and the accents and dialogue are fairly easy to understand, and I'm hard of hearing. Those who cannot understand it are obviously too used to foreign accents on our TVs rather than regional dialects. One criticism after watching Episode 1, the music is **** and far too loud. THAT is what spoils it....

All seasons are good.
mgs747120 March 2022
I'm not quite sure what all the "woke" comments are about. I get that certain things seem like they are being forced sometimes in tv and movies nowdays. I can't stand that. But not here. And that's the difference. I loved the first 2 seasons. Was unsure about season 3. Especially with a new lead and then all the woke talk. It's not slow. It's not boring. I was engaged till the very end with the whodunnit. Loved the culture. There were a few parts between the lead and her significant other that were unneeded or that just didn't make good sense. Otherwise a solid season 3 to go with the very solid seasons one and two. Worth the watch.

Slow and steady
Victor-fitforlife2 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I found it lacking in oomph and it was rather slow and steady.

Also quite unrealistic regarding the lead character played by Morven Christie. Why on earth would an experienced and by all accounts excellent detective not excuse herself from a case after finding out she had a one night stand with a married suspect?? It's not as though she committed a crime! She...as a single woman on a night out...had sex! Big deal, so what! She acted as though she had broken the law and her covering up of this non existent offence set the standard for the series.

Below average drama. ITV can do...and have done...much better!

Edit: Second series was much better. More dramatic and more exciting. Very good second series, loved it!

Drab soap opera interrupted by occasional detective work solving murder
msghall21 February 2021
The crime solving part of this series is indeed well done with some solid acting. However, that is only a small part of this soap opera, one that devotes most of its time to romance, break ups, bad relationships, family disfunction and other emotional baggage that have nothing to do with the essential plot. The dreary exteriors contribute to a sense of ennui, leaving the viewer without anyone for whom to cheer or empathize.

Would you want these cops working on finding your lost loved ones?
mskilling-6388428 March 2019
Great actors, and acting, but so far -- after one episode -- I am having a hard time convincing myself that the parents of the two lost children are wrong to have doubts about whether the cops are doing what needs to be done to find their kids. Seems the writers just assumed viewers would accept that their cops are on top of this, and may have forgotten to show us some evidence that they are indeed so.

Update: After watching second episode, still need convincing, and a lot of it.

Super Addictive Crime Series!
catfanatic88824 January 2020
The Bay is a very exciting crime series with terrific actors and a great story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I watched it all in one day. I couldn't stand not knowing how it was going to end. Ignore the low reviews. I live in the USA. I appreciate an International series of such high quality. Thank you for making this gem!
