This was the first really bad episode since the first episode of the season. Riverdale was on a winning streak until this one, yet another 3-story anthology arc just like the dark side one they did in Season 2, which was executed much better. A huge issue that I'm starting to have with this series is the writing is REALLY forcing Betty as the only smart and capable character out of the Core 4. Jughead has become obsessed with this G&G game, Veronica's loyalties shift with the wind, and Archie is getting dumber, which I thought was impossible. In particular, in this episode, the writers had Archie do something that was completely stupid even for him. And I felt as if the Jughead-Archie farm adventure had the potential to be the most entertaining, but it was sadly cut too short after Archie's dumb mistake. Veronica's gambling subplot, which had the most screentime, was an utter bore. There's a huge irony upcoming after my summary of Veronica's part, but I honestly wish that the writers would limit her screentime (and therefore dialogue) more because Veronica is simply not a compelling or interesting character. To the ironic part! Betty's subplot at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy was easily the standout from a writing and acting standpoint, but it is becoming very clear that the writers are pushing Betty into the Mary Sue of the show, as if she isn't there already. A very hit-or-miss character, Betty is given the deus ex machina treatment far too often for my taste, although it was less so in this one as she made some pretty believably crafty chess moves to try and outwit both Ethel and the Head Nun. Also, very unpopular opinion among the Riverdale fandom, but I enjoy Ethel Muggs! I think she's a hoot of a character and brings a sorely needed dose of humility to the Core 4, especially Betty and Veronica, both of whom think the world revolves around them, so I don't seeing them get knocked down off their high horses. I think fans are way too hard on Ethel, especially when the 2 self-appointed Queens of Riverdale Betty and Veronica have done some seriously shady stuff. I mean, how will Bughead ever survive a blackmail induced kiss from the criminal mastermind that is Ethel Muggs? Stay strong Bughead fans! LOL
