Great start to Season 4
panchpornissim3313 December 2019
Season openers are expected to be slow, but The Expanse 4.1 is engaging for the full 49 minutes. Absolutely gorgeous visuals, especially the opening few minutes and the planet Illus. So good to hear the Belter language again. Keeping in mind the tradition of mid-season episodes being the best, I am excited to see how the first half of the season unfolds!!

The New World
Hitchcoc20 January 2020
Holden and the gang have been deployed to settle a dispute on a new territory called New Terra. The whole fallout of the encounter with the ring is that there is a huge land grab and this is leading to some real conflict. A coalition is trying to keep order and who can and can't invade the territory. Of course, the same three entities that were dominant before have skin in the game. When Holden et. al. arrive, something very strange occurs.

I'm speechless

I would rather give this episode storywise a 9 but the incredible production value and Interstellar-like cinematography makes it an easy 10

Cinematically beyond all expectations, storytelling is top notch too
russellk-6175813 December 2019
Just watched the first episode and have to say... just blown away. The creators clearly were not affected by the transition. A great example that stories focusing on deep personal minutia within a grand scheme can thrive in a world where instant gratification is becoming the norm.

I cant think of anything on TV or in theatres that feels more genuinely human, that immerses the mind so deeply in the physics of space and entry into a new world for the first time.

So happy this wasn't cancelled.

So many people were watching, my app crashed
XweAponX15 December 2019
I waited so long for this and I was extremely excited when I got the announcement that the fourth season of the show was available.

So when I login to my ATV4K, I got error message after error message the entire evening.

Finally, the next morning I was able to watch this episode.

The ring has opened up a gateway to thousands of new planets. Which could start the solar systems' first new "bloody gold rush"... both Holden and Avasarala are concerned about this.

This first episode has the crew of the Rocinante in a place where they've never been before: mainly, no longer being chased by the combined armies of the Martian Colonial Navy and the UN.

But Miller, is he still looking for clues? Miller is worried about something else.

And so, he wants to hitch a ride from Holden into the Ring system.

Naomi: she looks better. I think I like this haircut, although I did like the "belter" haircut she sported in the second half of season three.

Drummer and Ashford: The big floating gigantic tin can that the Mormons made is now a refueling station, and Drummer is still the captain of that. Ashford, who used to be a pirate, now hunts pirates.

Bobby Draper, what's she doing? It appears she works in a junkyard... you just have to wonder what kind of trouble she is going to get into next. And it appears that "Melba" and Amos have made some kind of connection, she talks about something that happened on the way home to her trial, and I think I got the distinct impression from Amos that he caused it to happen. Find out what it is, you tell me.

I was hoping that Melba would find her way back into the story in more than just a cameo in one episode. And that her sister would show up the next time Miller would show up, but that hasn't happened... Yet. If at all. She was a large part of the story up until Eros, and it was Miller's attraction to her that made him decide to stay on Eros... you would think that the blue goo would resurrect her as well.

And of course, we are introduced to Burn Gorman as "Murtry". All I can say about that is this, if he was a rat fink in Game of Thrones, how much more so will he be one in The Expanse? I think I prefer his character from the Pacific Rim franchise.

Avasarala, of course, is overly paranoid about another Eros happening. And if you consider that, it puts a distinctive colour on the tone of this season. It becomes one of the major conflicts, especially problematic for Arasavala, who is being pressured to open up traffic to the ring system: But a low-intelligence person in her cabinet that doesn't realize that mankind had already narrowly escaped extinction by the skin of Avasarala's teeth, wants to toss caution out of the nearest airlock and and now they have walked down a "golden escalator".

I don't see any valid reason why this review was declined, when other reviews that included words that weren't even self-censored have been allowed. And, since I really didn't include any major spoilers, I am changing it back to no spoilers. Everything I mentioned here had already been revealed in previous episodes.

Blown away by the amazing changes to this season.

From the first moment you know the production got much better. The feel is consistent, yet better. They just cranked the show up. I am blown away by what they have done.

Nice way to start out the new season.
vdoman-2232117 December 2019
One star docked for Christian's character. She swears so much. Not that I don't appreciate a good looking woman with a dirty mouth, but her character seems written with too much drama and overreaction. I always liked her calm, controlled, manipulation side. Not this swearing, stressed, yelling personality. The rest of the show and characters are all falling right into place.

Excellent

The kind of technology used here is realistic, other serials tend to focus on too much on CGI and forget about the story,..... well the expanse is different!! though season 4 took long to air... it's still one of the best space shows

What's with Avasarala?
PsychologicalRice731 December 2019
Avasarala's been one of the characters I've never liked throughout the show, but in this first episode of the fourth season she's unbearable. I guess the writers wanted to make her more interesting or make her seem more authoritative, I don't know, but I cringed every time she spoke. Every single sentence was vulgar and profane. Curse words don't upset me, but I found myself rolling my eyes every time she spoke. I can't even take her seriously.

On a different note, the new special effects that Amazon brought to the table were nice, however, the episode felt a little lackluster depth-wise to me. Hopefully the rest of the season will pick up.

Great begining

Warning: Spoilers
To a promising season

This season started great, filled with intrigue, politics, tension and conflict to come.

The idea of opening to new worlds and the race to colonize them, the peace between Earth, Mars and the Earth becoming weaker and the continuing threat of the protomolecule together with the idea of an old civilization having been aniquilated are all issues that I hope will be developed in the episodes to come

This series keeps getting better.

Hoped for a better society
rpl-228375 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It seems that even in fiction, too many of us can't learn from our past! I am glad to see the crew of the Roci back together again, but sorry to not see Bobbi with them. She would have made a great addition to that crew. What preparation did Martian Alex do to prepare for future landings? He a Bobbi would make an interesting pair. BTW, Amos gave Clarissa a choice of killing herself or serving the punishment she would get. That's why she thanks him. I am also glad to see Holden and crew given respectability.

How did humans escape the Ring? I had hoped to see the effects of that lesson. Instead, too many can't learn from the past. Sad commentary on humanity!

Sunk to a boring space procedural...I hope things will get better
LeatherCajun17 April 2020
I really was not impressed with S04E01. All the same political fights from S01-S03, the faked future accents are getting worse, there are now way too many characters that the writers seem to feel need to be reintroduced, even if they are only microwaving dinner, all of a sudden the highest government official is best buds and trading quips with the lead space jockey. As of now, I just don't care...I hope it gets better.

How long does this review have to be?

The production values are just okay. Worst animation of bodies in space I have seen since the 60s.

Avaserala's language.

Reply to Nice way to start out the new season.

Vdoman-2232117 December 2019

Avaserala swears constantly in the books, right from the beginning: if anything, her character in the series is rather restrained in her language!

I'm currently just starting Book 5, and loving it. The books go into a lot of background detail (as expected) but the series is a very good and pretty close retelling. Not perfect of course, it would have cost an absolute fortune to reproduce it identically, not to mention being about four times as long, but still an addictive and compelling version of the story. We all love it.

Too much foul language
doomer19524 February 2021
I'm no prude, by any means, but the language coming out of all the characters mouths, especially the Secretary General, is disgusting! Have we descended into a culture that can't carry on a conversation without using foul language in every sentence? Call me old fashioned, but can't we do better than this?

JOE MILLER FOR PRESIDENT!
dollfacecrafter9 February 2021
Favorite character, Thomas Jane is amazing as always..........Chrisjen is annoying and I have never liked her, her voice is cringe worthy to begin with and now she is spouting venom and foul language that is not even necessary. interesting show, could be a little more explainatory (if that is even a word ?) hard to know what is going on sometimes..........too much complications, just tell a story please

Copy of a Sci-Fi Novel
divdby02 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the fourth season is a direct copy of the legendary author Stanislaw Lem's sci-fi novel "The Invincible". Unfortunately this ruined the show for me.
