The birth of Mr. Robot's fsociety
trademarcdesigns27 September 2018
First of all, this is not a real movie. It's an 8 1/2 minute film clip of a movie watched by Elliot and Darlene in Mr. Robot. It was supposedly available on the Mr. Robot website at one time, but if you want to watch it now, you'll have to look it up on YouTube. The "movie" itself is a typical 1980's slasher flick in which a man wearing what will later become the iconic fsociety mask is killing off some spoiled preppy kids with a crudely sharpened polo mallet. The opening credits show that it was produced by E Corp, a tongue-in-cheek reference that will not be lost on Mr. Robot fans.

In a flashback scene from season 2 of Mr. Robot, Darlene stops by Elliot's apartment with a copy of this movie - a movie they used to watch when they were kids - and they pop it in the VCR, get high, and relive some childhood memories. The significance of this encounter is that it triggers Elliot's first visions of his dead father, and gives birth to the plan that will eventually lead to the super-hack that crashes the American economy.

The rating I have given this movie is obviously not for the movie itself, but rather for Mr. Robot, and for the lengths the production team is willing to go to in order to flesh out their backstory. So if you are a Mr. Robot fan, make your way to YouTube and check this out - it might shed some light on the emotional development of some of our favorite characters.

Alright for a spoof

Warning: Spoilers
"The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie" is an American English-language live action short film from 2016, so this one will soon have its fifth anniversary. Do not be fooled by the years 1984 show initially (just as I was) because this one here acts as if it was shot in 1984, the year in which I was born by the way. The director and one of the writers is Adam Penn and he is not your regular fan film director as you could suspect with his involvement here. Instead, he has been part of quite a handful really prestigious projects, even been nominated for two Emmys. So with this one we got here, he was clearly just joking around a bit. There are also no cast members for whatever reason, which is a bit of a pity because I am curious about the name of the first girl and she was really stunning. The one in the end wasn't too shabby either, the redhead I mean and with what happens to her, Penn really goes all in fun-wise. Anyway, it's a pretty long title for a fairly short film because this one stays easily under the 10-minute mark at 8.5 minutes or minimally over. The title is of course a reference to a famous French film, which most people have probably recognized. So yeah, the outcome here is fairly gimmicky with the way the male victim keeps rambling, which never would happen in real life like this, but also (and especially) with the killer's looks. He is a gentleman. A nobleman really with his mask of a rather old man with a distinguished beard and of course the cylinder. But the truth is obviously that he is a psychopath killer. So the contrast makes for the comedy here. The absurdity of it all will maybe make you smile once or twice. Especially when the girl with the big breasts runs away in the end. I would say that, if I rated this as a parody, then I would give two stars more, but as a film itself I am going with four stars out of ten this time. You're not doing anything wrong really if you decide to go for it. I personally give it a thumbs-down overall though. Not recommended, even if it could have been way worse and way uninspired honestly. It's not that bad.
