If you liked EVEREST (2015), FREE SOLO (2018), THE ALPINIST (2021), you will probably like this too. It's not as good as the aforementioned movie and documentaries, it's a low budget production and acting is mediocre, however, it's better than i thought it would be.

There are some impressive mountain shots, tension, acting is not bad and the ending is good. It is not much intense, your heart is not gonna beat faster, but these are 2 hours well spent, providing that you like these activities, i mean mountain climbing. If you are interested in this way of life (climbing and other dangerous activities), there is a kinda accurate depiction of it in this movie, and you will find it interesting.

It's not a great movie, probably it's not a good either, but i enjoy it. Read the plot and you will know what this is about. If you think it is interesting, watch it, you will not get disappointed. 4.9/10 is not a fair rating.

Cautionary Tale
stevendbeard16 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Summit Fever, starring Freddie Thorp-Overdrive, The Head Hunter; Mathilde Warnier-Spiral_tv, A Very Secret Service_tv; Michel Biel-Tomorrow is Ours_tv, Dunkirk and Ryan Phillippe-Big Sky_tv, MacGruber.

This is a cautionary tale for mountain climbers to be careful and know what they are getting into. Freddie and Michel are climbing buddies that decide they need to climb 3 mountains before they go back to their mundane, every day lives. The movie title-Summit Fever-refers to thrill seekers such as Freddie and Michel that like to push the limits while climbing. Ryan plays a more seasoned climber that joins their party and Mathilde is a skier that likes Freddie but prefers skiing to climbing-she doe not accompany them on their climb. It might have something to do with seeing several other climbers fall to their deaths before her friends start their ascent. The scenery with the mountains looks nice but not everyone makes it back down alive. A big storm hits during mid climb and adds to their problems.

It's rated R for language and has a running time of 1 hour & 55 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but if you like climbing, it would be alright as a rental.

Tokenism at it's finest
promus-0501820 March 2023
In my opinion, the most glaring part of this movie is the one black character, Rudi, that appears in the beginning of the movie as part of the group, but then suddenly disappears, appearing only in the background until the last half of the film, and then disappears again. He's the only character whose story never gets fleshed out in any way, and never gets an official ending. Sad to see tokenism is still alive and well.

Other than that, it's an engaging film, the climbing scenes are done very well, and I found the lead actor particularly talented. However, one other oddity of this film were the touches of old school nods such as the disposable camera, the film camera, the 1950s looking radio, etc.. If you enjoy films about climbing and climbers, you'll probably enjoy this film.

Worse than expected
judgemint-over29 December 2022
There was a good film in in here somewhere, however, I feel that poor execution, casting, and weak writing (specifically the first half) let the entire concept down. If you can manage to get past the first 45min the film does become significantly more eventful and entertaining.....aided by lower reliance on the character "background" stories and any actual acting.

That being said, it's the first time since The Avengers (1998) that I kept looking at my watch praying for the agony to stop.

In terms of redemption, the climbing scenes were well executed and there are some beautiful cinematic sequences of the mountains.

Probably not the worst film I've ever seen, and I've likely been harsh with my rating so take with a pinch of salt.

Not much plot here
Leofwine_draca26 May 2023
SUMMIT FEVER is one of the more disappointing mountaineering films out there, mainly because it has no real plot. At least thrillers like CLIFFHANGER and A LONELY PLACE TO DIE (which director Julian Gilbey also made) had thriller plots with a mountaineering backdrop, which gave them drive and narrative coherency. Here, we just get a group of dull young friends (and added Hollywood star Ryan Philippe for name value) who decide to go climb a few mountains. Tragedy strikes on occasion, but it's not very thrilling or indeed involving. Gilbey obviously has a real-life passion for mountaineering but I do wonder if this would have just worked better as a documentary.

Way better than I expected

Ok, this isn't a masterpiece. But negativity it gets is totally undeserved. I mean, if you just want a simple movie to pass some time, I can totally recommend it. If you are a climber and have been to Chamonix yourself - even more so, since it is realistic enough to bring some memories back.

Acting and story are fine. Sure, there was a couple of times when I rolled my eyes and scoffed, but "a couple of times" is actually quite good by my standards. I mean, take almost any Oscar-winning blockbuster with some insane budget and it will be yet another mind-numbingly stupid piece of crap. Yet people still like it somehow, it will have 7+ score on IMDB and might even become a classic.

Now, here is a pretty solid drama/adventure movie. Honestly, I was even touched by it. Is it plausible? Well, yeah, as I've said, there are some questionable moments, technical stuff being done incorrectly, totally unrealistic timing and such, but given how bad climbing/mountaineering is usually represented in the movies - wow, this one is actually super realistic. Usually it doesn't even make sense what gear they use, and here they even manage to use it correctly most of the time. Places are totally real, scenery is real and recognizable, dangers are (mostly) real.

All in all, if you've never been to mountains - it's a nothing out of ordinary drama, don't expect anything special and you won't be disappointed. It surely isn't awful. And if you've been there yourself, you may as well appreciate how familiar all of this is instead of complaining over relatively minor details.

And, once again: this is NOT a masterpiece. Normally, I wouldn't even bother to comment, but it just felt so unjust that it currently has IMDB rating of below 5, while being a better adventure and love story than 90% of all Hollywood.

Can't believe people are enthousitic about it
eelcodam22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing the reviews here I am amazed. I mean, the script (if you know nothing about climbing) is pretty bad. Just a quote:

"You look alike, the same big brown eyes.", talking about the main character and his dead sister. One shot later you can clearly see his eyes, which are blue.

Then the climbing. Oof. I've spend some time with people who breath climbing, by which I'm trying to say I know little from personal experience, but quite some from friends. Basics like saying "you want to reach the summit before sunset" is weird, since you'll be climbing during the hottest part of the day. People who do mountaineer start early, way early, to reach the summit as early as possible too.

Anyway, this film felt like it didn't research enough, didn't portrait the climbing community in a good way, whilst showing the worst part of climbing; death. To me it almost felt like a mockery, having known too many people who died climbing.

Girlfriend liked it, even though she knows about the same stuff I do, it didn't bother her and she really got in to it.

The ending, we both agreed, was kinda meh.

Rubbish movie
lallybots18 March 2023
Just couldn't get into it. Started like a good film but didn't last long ( think it was wishful thinking more than anything) then got really cheesy like pure cheese! The film is all over the place just felt lost and bored. Felt like I was waiting for something to happen something to get me hooked in but no. Disappointing. Really don't get the concept of the story. Did not get this film. Has to be up there with one of the worst films I've ever seen. Don't know what else to say apart from it was rubbish but have to keep writing to reach required characters to post this review to warn others in that it's crap!

A bad movie
engyvook5 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think this movie is just, simply a bad movie. There's almost nothing about it which is good. Most of the acting is mediocre to bad, the dialogue is really bad. Really really bad. There are a few shots edited during intense scenes that are actually really good but don't let this kind of statement attract you into watching this, we're talking halves of seconds here. There is a moment in the movie, Spoiler alert at night, during a storm that a black figure is mimicing and then approaching our protagonist - a moment that was actually very scary and very unclear - like it was cut from a horror movie, but it had no payoff and it didn't fit.

All and all a waste of time.

Great Film !
szaszkarol-2033317 October 2022
In this era, only the movies with heavy CGI get the good ratings.

Movies where Actors stay safe in a studio and everything else is made of fiction.

This movie is great, climbing is real, the snow is real, the mountains are real.

It's not a blockbuser , it's not gonna win academy awards. But it's got emotion it's got great mountain views,it has tension and it has a simple, but good story.

Hands down to the producer and all the actors, they have made a great job and I'm sure it wasn't an easy one

I love mountain climbing films so I said I'll give it a try. Ryan Philippe was the only actor I knew , although I don't know the other ones, I really liked them and they all made a great contribution to this. Freddie Thorp is a young actor but he sure is talented.

Definitely worth watching this!

Only watch if you're a climbing fanatic
FeastMode28 March 2023
Half of Summit Fever is watching people climb. I know that may not seem like a criticism when that's what the movie is about. But you need more than that for it to feel like a real movie. I might as well watch a documentary or real footage of climbers.

The other half of Summit Fever is the most basic and useless character development and story setup. They throw in a love story that actually works but isn't necessary and doesn't make up for the rest of the movie.

I don't have much else to say. This movie is extremely boring with almost no intrigue. The main part of the story, the biggest mountain they will climb, doesn't happen until 70 minutes into the movie. By then I was mostly checked out. (1 viewing, 3/27/2023)

3 for the photography!
ken-c-225-22248427 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of the storyline is great. The reality of what happens is another matter. Yes it's a drama, but the reality of it all??

It starts of well! The climb of Dent du Geant on the fixed ropes is spot on.. the walk in from the Midi?? Climbers will want to watch it, but if you know the area and the climbs time scales, the lack of crowds! Getting the Summit of the Matterhorn all to yourself and 😳 all in 7 days! Yes they are supposed to be above average climbers, but Wow the must drive like F1 drivers.

The idea of sumittng the Blanc, and in a couple of hours ending up in the Cosmiques Hut is laughable.

All in all it's not a bad watch.. Are you a climber? It's a bit cringe worthy.

I'm trying
Lilith_i6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really am trying to finish this movie. Is it this bad, or is it the dialog? The by the numbers character development?

Why is this movie so so boring. I've started/stop 4 times already. I am 2/3 done I think.... but I am so bored.

I will keep writing because I'm 333 characters short, but there's not much to say.

What is the purpose of the movie? Why was the American such an ass? Not that I wanted him to be funny, but shouldn't the local be the ass? Is there a local character? They seem to be all foreigners?

Maybe the one that died, but I believe he was Italian? I don't even know, because I couldn't care less for this people.

I'll try to forget the movie, then maybe I'll be able to finish it.

Don't mistake this for a good movie, even if you like mountain climbing, this lacks story, you could put the characters in any type of setting, they are that generic.

Simply go watch it
jackdan-0527323 October 2022
It's a movie about real people and real fellings.

It's good, really good.

Good acting, good writing, good photography, good directing.

If you are like me that are sick of woke trash on movies, and want to simply watch a nice, intimate and humane work of art, then this movie is for you.

Anyone can relate to the fellings and facts that surround this story, it doesn't matter if you do not ski or don't like mountaneering. The movie is more than that.

It's a decent thriller and reminds me of movies like Point Break.

It has a sense of adventure and young stupidity that we all had in life.

Plus is so realistic... Nice, I had a good intimate moment watching it.

Thank you.

Another Killer Eiger!
steveguitarist19 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Great movie. Cringed alot. Squinted alot. Looked at my phone alot. Watched my wife cringing and squinting. In other words the action is realistic and the photography puts you on those cliffs. I suggest you have a blanket on hand. Wind. Wind. Wind. Snow. Snow. Snow. Then... Thunder and lightning! If you liked the Eiger Sanction-1975. If you liked "North Face-2008". If you liked Everest, Touching The Void and Beyond The Edge. You'll like this movie. If, like me, you're a child of the 1970s and popular folk music you'll get the irony of the closing credits song by Loudon Wainwright III-The Swiming Song 1973. I got it. Sang along. Perfect choice for a mountain climbing flick. Kudos to the clever producers.

so so so so good
joanj-2870922 April 2023
The writers, producers, and directors put a lot of love into this movie. The actors were excellent and the climbers were superb. The story line was actually great... a lot of characters you really feel for in the end. The shots were amazing, really took my breath away. For any climbers out there, they actually had real climbers doing crazy stuff; awesome to see. In most climbing movies, the story lines are cheesy and just TOO fictional; they also usually have non-climbers trying to act out climbing scenes and it just looks BAD. Definitely NOT the case in Summit Fever. You can tell the actors actually trained in the sport before climbing, and the stunt doubles were real pros. Plus the stories of love and friendship were genuine and real. Icing on the cake was the super 8 film video at the end. Overall the movie was beautiful and acting was phenomenal!

Good climbing film overall
charliej-8424924 October 2022
I really like climbing/mountain films generally. K2, everest, touching the void etc.

This film is very similar so if you enjoyed those you'll likely enjoy this.

Typical kinda story where you have 2 friends who like to climb together. One starts to grow up getting into an apprenticeship while the other continues on his adventures. Cue lots of luring and next min they're back together with a bunch of other climbers to take on some challenging (once in a lifetime opportunity) mountains.

Things inevitably take a turn for the worse and drama ensues!

You'd think the story ends there but nope! Get back on the horse and all that jazz, next min they're climbing another mountain. And guess what? Things take an inevitable turn for the worse and drama ensues!!

The acting was a mix, some good some not so much but nothing super terrible.

I enjoyed it and would watch it again for sure.

Life on the edge
tomsview10 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love mountain climbing movies. Not that I'm into mountain climbing, I actually need to employ panic suppression techniques when I climb onto the fifth rung of a ladder.

As far as movies go, real climbers seem to go for the documentary films that don't integrate a fictitious story, which sometimes can be rockier than the real rocks. In one list of the 20 best climbing movies, the ones I like appeared towards the bottom including "Vertical Limit" with everyone going crazy on K2.

But where films like "Vertical Limit" and "The Eiger Sanction" are about the adventure and the thrills, "Summit Fever" goes to the core of what makes people climb and often die doing it.

Michael (Freddie Thorpe) starts an internship in Dad's financial firm, but quickly realises that the adrenaline rush of falling share prices can't beat the adrenaline rush of falling off the Eiger. He accepts an invitation from his friend, Jean-Pierre (Michel Biel), to "swap suit and tie for ice axe and crampons" and join him and a group scaling the big three: The Matterhorn, The North Face of the Eiger and Mont Blanc.

We learn that the driving force of this fraternity of climbers is summed up in the old biblical phrase "...to eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die". Michael has reservations about the culture.

There are a lot of falls in this film and people die suddenly. The film looks amazingly real and some of the scenes are breathtaking. I wondered if this was an exaggeration, but no, apparently Mont Blanc is the most dangerous mountain in the world with an average of 100 fatalities per year compared to about 300 in total on Everest.

There is amazing sang-froid when someone spins off into the void after a rope snaps or they misjudge a leap to a ledge. "He died doing what he loved" is said often in the film, but as Michael points out to Jean-Pierre after he saw two of their friends fall, "Don't you get it, they died screaming".

Isabelle (Mathilde Warnier) who starts out as carefree as the rest also begins to have reservations when she falls for Michael. However he eventually goes in the opposite direction, accepting that climbing is engrained in his DNA.

The final sequence in the storm with the supernatural encounter seems an odd touch; the otherworld experience may have been best left to Michael Richard Plowman's evocative score, which defined the unspoken thoughts and emotions of the characters.

However the last scene between Isabelle and Michael makes up for any shortcomings when they make a decision that is at once bitter sweet, but inevitable.
