Most East Coast American Indian tribes welcomed fleeing slaves all along the Underground Railroad. Tribal members inter-married with their guests so much that to this day, many East Coast tribal members appear to be African American. In some cases, such inter-marriage was due in large part to the sudden disappearance of marriage-age men (e.g., the Shinnecock of eastern-most Long Island in NY State lost most of their young men in a whaling accident). But others, such as the Lumbee of North Carolina, the Wampanoag of Massachusetts, and the Nanticoke of Delaware, established long-term relationships with runaways along the Underground Railway that lasted for generations and are evident to this day.
