10/10 for intensity, 4/10 for writing
Boris-Sh5 March 2020
It was a very intense episode, full of action and suspense, and a little surprise in the end. But it was poorly written, with characters making poor decisions, illogical decisions, which cause frustration to the viewers and overshadow the good action. After 6 great episodes, it was a quite disappointing one. I hope the next ones improve.

Feel like I have to redeem this episode
sjmarkus-7518427 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Idk why everyone seemingly hates this episode, it hit hard with me honestly, especially the last few minutes. Sure the easy answer would have been for Kinsey to use an overpowered key against him, but the music box could have been upstairs, where the man who killed their father was. There are perhaps some slight logical flaws and but the character development for Sam was pretty heavy hitting and provided a reasonable driving force for his actions. I ended up feeling for him in the end and it furthered the plot well. Maybe everyone hating on this episode is a superfan of the novel or just a hater in general?

Heavier episode
sjorr7814 February 2020
Let me state I've never read the graphic novels. I enjoy this show a lot even if there are things that don't quite make sense or characters actions that annoy me. I feel like it's still trying to gain it's momentum but it by far doesn't need the 1/10 stars. This episode held a lot for future plot changes. The drama was deep, the teenagers self absorbed (not unheard of), and the mom just completely lost. I'm still intrigued and look forward to more and to reading the graphic novels.

This episode took the show from watchable and somewhat clever, to unbelievably stupid.

This is the PERFECT example what happens when a group of writers have no idea where to take a story. Jesus Christ, what a disappointment.

Why oh why ...
Thor989 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Why on earth didn't Kinsey use the music box key on Sam? Make him blow his brains out, call the cops and that's it.

As of now, I'm pretty sure Kinsey didn't kill and buried her 'Fear', but accidentally her 'Intelligence'.

Using the stupid ghost key was so helpfull instead, since ghosts can't touch stuff or even be seen by the living, as Bode should know from his first ghost trip.

"Oh, somebody broke into our house? But if it's not the well lady, who could it be?" Yes, who would burgle a solitary big azz mansion in the middle of the night? How about A BURGLER?

When did good writing became such a rare artform?

Warning: Spoilers
Till this episode the story was going decently well, then out of a sudden, silly narrative started playing as if a disney star wars writer came on board? did the writer run out of ideas or something? why on earth did the sister go to Sam? why didn't she use the music box and key? now the well lady has all of the keys, this episode absolutely ruined it BIG TIME

Terrible episode
jon_anderson779 February 2020
As others have said the writing for this episode is an insult to viewers. Character decisions are idiotic and after introducing various key powers nothing is used to its advantage. Instead the Locke family behave in a way literally no one with an ounce of intelligence would. This episode left me really annoyed and im now on the fence as to whether to continue so late in the game as my concern is that this sort of pitiful writing with crop up again in future episodes.

Just plain stupid.....
urbanspider10 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so the crazy guy takes the Mother hostage and the kid has a look as a ghost to see what's happening, typically being stupid thinking the mother can hear or sea him, then the kid and girl decide to try and be clever and save the mum...... Thing is, all the girl had to do was use the music box key to control the crazy guy, Sam, into dropping the gun. Job done, easy peasy.... or so you'd think, anyone with half a brain would have done that, especially as the girl had plenty of experience using that key, but no, so they both get caught. Infuriating. Stupid, just plain stupid.... Then Tyler gets the golden key from the hot woman, a key he has no knowledge about but all of a sudden knows that how to use it. Hmm, how's that then. And then, yes, he goes and loses it straight away to the crazy guy who has a bronze jaw. On and on it goes until all but one key is taken.... Are these the dumbest kids on TV or what.

How did everyone become stupid?
mavericksy11 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So this episode was clearly written to setup some future plot agenda. Unfortunately it was written so poorly it only manages to infuriate the watcher as the whole Locke family became morons to make it happen. They could have found better ways to have Dodge end up with the keys that made sense.

Most Idiotic and Most Amateurish Direction I've Ever Seen in a Show, EVER
aylinpatacsil9 February 2020
Most idiotic decisions. Most inappropriate emotions. Obviously the director / writer doesn't know how long gunpoint conversations last as compared to... running across a mansion, explaining a mechanic, opening a door, going in and becoming a ghost, flying happily through the walls and out into the house, go to the gunpoint scene, talk to everyone to only realize you're a ghost, and go back achieving nothing, then go confront the gunpoint scenario still AT THE SAME SENTENCE.

Reminds me of that scene in Scary Movie, where Carmen Electra has all the most deadly weapons at her disposal and she picks a BANANA. But at least there it was intentionally hilarious, this one is so bad it's offending audience intelligence.

The 'tense' scene has been so dragged out that the lines have been repeated in some form or another. Dragged out so long and BORING that I was wishing the child or the mom or anyone gets killed horrifically just to get it over with! For a tense scene, this has the drama of a nun's funeral.

Connor Jessup is the only good actor here. Even if the direction is trash, he manages to make youth, fear, breathlessness, and panic authentic and believable. Unfortunately one good actor isn't enough to hold up an entire series.

Jump the shark
Marynewcomb20139 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was just garbage. They fail to say how Sam got from the west coast to the north east coast so fast! They have the oldest son get the key to anywhere back from Dodge but they fail to show how Sam got the key from him for Dodge to get it back! The mother watches Dodge walk into her home, attack her son & just take the gun from her! As I said, it's garbage, jumped the shark Becky the writer had a brain fart of something!! This episode should have never existed!

We Are Fuming - So Let Down!
ronaldmsingh17 February 2020
We've just binge-watched the first 6 episodes, and they have been absolutely brilliant. But then, we got to this episode... I feel so betrayed - what a poorly written episode and 180 degrees on all the characters, just to lead (I presume) to some kind of showdown. Really, really poor... we'll watch to the end, but season 2 can go...

Horrible episode
jkjohnso-0050618 February 2020
This was the worst episode. Why did they all become so stupid? They had the keys. Why didn't they use the control key? This was horrible writing.

How is this episode rated 7.5?
lord-pro14 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm completing dumbfounded as to how this episode has such a high rating. How? The show was going pretty well thus far and then we got this lump of garbage of an episode. The entire family were filled with idiotic ideas throughout.

Why did Tyler find the key on Dodge and then show it to her, like wtf did he think was gonna happen?

Why turn into a ghost, see the killer and then turn yourself over to him? You knew where he was, and he didn't know where you were, why?

Why when you see your fears monster self kicking do you run and leave him there with the gun and the keys instead of taking either away?

Why not use the music box key? Did the writers forget about that one?

Why have the killer at gunpoint outside of his body and still not take the keys from him? Why not either shoot him in that moment or you know, take all the damn keys?

Why would the mom be curious about a freaking magic door, and then drop her guard to go look at it while having the man who KILLED HER HUSBAND, and just attacked her family in front of her?

I was prepared to give this show a huge recommendation on my podcast (That Beautiful Life), but this episode ruined that. It is one of the worst piece of narrative crap I've seen in ages, and anyone who can't come to that conclusion has to be just as stupid as the characters make those stupid decisions.

Worst episode so far
alreadyseenbeentaken24 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So many scenes that made no sense.

Why didn't she use the music box?

Why didn't she pick up the gun?

Why did the mother look in the opposite direction when the lady came in.

Pathetic
starjump11 February 2020
Lordy Lord Lord. I know TV shows and movies like to keep you hooked and not give anything away too early or solve mysteries right away but this was ridiculous. No one in the Locke family has any god damn sense, try calling the police or something. Pick up the gun or perhaps the sodding key, hey I dunno. 1 star only because the first part was ok otherwise 0, nil point, big fat nothing.

Absolutely absurd and has done nothing to help my alopecia.

Can't even be bothered to say anything else as will depress myself. If I lived in that town I get the hell outta Dodge (no pun intended).

What a turndown in writing
jllagunos19 May 2020
The series started pretty well. The plot was interesting and the characters engaging. But the writing failed greatly on episode 6. But this one was the worst. Who wrote this chapter? An eleven year old? Why do writers insist on make their characters take stupid decisions? They all start acting against their nature and choose the worst path all the time. It became infuriating.

WTF

How to ruin a good series with the Worst and I do mean worst acting and plot lines. How a family can be so pathetic in the face of absolute danger and the character of Sam was and is the weak point. Poor acting and ridiculous script

Extremely poor writing
jerkersandsten13 February 2020
I'm not sure what I just watched... Up until this episode, I found this series really good but it took a turn real quick. The scenes shot in this episode are some of the most dumb and bad I've seen in a long time.

Good Guys Go Dumb - Writers Along With Them
pownjesus22 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode made me want to throw my remote at the tv. Hard to tell if the writers went brain dead, or the director did.

There's no less than 3 times that Sam dropped his gun, and one of the Locke family could have picked it up and been done with this forced drama immediately... instead the writer or director drug it out over 60 painful minutes and made every Locke member a complete moron making any person paying attention CRINGE at the tropey suspense scenes.

For instance; Kinsey could have picked the gun up while her fear monster had Sam pinned; nope, she ran away instead. Tyler could have picked it up after knocking it out of his hand; nope, he got burned instead...etc

Then, right after using the Puppet Master key on a bully at school, the kids suddenly forgot they could control people with that key. How about we have Bode use the ghost key to do nothing instead! Kinsey's character was just moronic; and the script (not the actor) is to blame.

Sam could have been dealt with when Tyler got the head key in him... Locke mommy could have done him in with the scissors, but suddenly decided to not go for the head this time.

Watch it - and look for how many times the director/writers force suspense using ridiculous scenarios and decisions... you'll hate it.

Lucky This Was Episode 7 of 10
teecee-8002319 March 2020
Had this episode been maybe 2 or 3, I'd be done! This was bad on so many levels! Even my 9 year old was dumbfounded with some of the decisions the characters made! I've already watched 7 of the 10 so I'm going to keep going. But had this foolery been done earlier...!

Someone used the head key to remove intelligence
marcos-chiu2 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I created an account just to be able to vent my disappointment about this garbage episode. Utter and complete trash. I understand the series had to come to a point where Dodge has the keys, but this episode is a complete waste of time getting to it. Everyone decided to become incredibly stupid all of a sudden and make the worst choices ever, while having a huge amount of tools at their disposal. Every twist was lame and the directing choices were worse than amateurish.

Terrible Writing, very slight spoilers.
susankraft18 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I felt like I was watching a Cheesy horror film where the characters are doing stupid crap just to further the plot the writers want to actually happen, rather than writing a reasonable plot to get there.

The daughter was the only intelligent one out of the bunch until she decided to leave the bad guy while he was down with his gun, because why grab the gun when the guy is helpless.

The mom was just stupid, so worried about the past than about the present.

The previous episodes were good, but the one prior to this one was a little dumb, water doesn't rise that much in the time it takes to put down a camera, they should have been at the very least, setting up their equipment like they had been there longer than 45 seconds. But this episode jumped the shark so so badly that it may have ruined the entire series.
