It's Not Just American Teams
greg_wheeler14 August 2020
Hey guys, just as a heads up the first episode is very American-centric with the stories being told. However, toward the middle chunk of episodes we do hear from other teams a lot more. Spain. Estonia, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and even Guatamala are given time on-screen and the perspective is a lot better balanced.

Early on though there's definitely a big American slant but seriously, stick it out, it's worth it!

Worth the Effort
b2tall17 August 2020
While it's a bit of overload on the inspirational stories, in the end it's worth the watch just to see who makes it and who doesn't. I have to say I was more surprised by the teams that DID finish as compared to those who failed.

It's more of a reality show than a sports show
pipeafr118 August 2020
It is still one of the best competitions but they focused a lot on few teams and put aside the sporting event. They never showed general leaderboards nor did they show 50% of the top 10 teams. I could never know in which position the Colombian team arrived because they never showed them even in a single shot

You all know it's American film crew so that's why they spotlight USA teams!!
mpboylanjr-5403814 August 2020
I think the show is done very well , and shows a race that I , and many others had no idea existed. It shows teams from all over the world competing in this grueling and treacherous racing events. It is projected down into multiple stages and checkpoints. The race covers open ocean and jungle trekking as well as bicycle riding and hiking mountains and jungles. Many of these people have amazing stories and it is very nice to see a program that spotlights diversity and positivity. I see complaints about showing to much of the USA teams and not enough of others. Simple answer is that it is an American production and film crew. Therefore they spotlight them over others. I would have liked to see more of the others also but I think they do a fine job giving time to these other countries. Let's not forget logistically that this race covers vast areas which are very difficult to get film crews in and that they cannot be everywhere at once. Bear Grylls, whom I am a big fan of Does a great job hosting the event and popping up in spots when the athletes are at there most tired which shines a light on how difficult this race really is. The athletes and teams must also build there rafts in certain areas of the race and trek all their gear with them as well. Very informative and fun to watch. Do not listen to reviews complaining about only seeing American teams. There's plenty of other countries and it's a breathe of fresh air. Well done Amazon !!!

Thrilling, heartfelt, and a must watch
daltonvalette14 August 2020
I love Survivor, the Amazing Race, and Man v. Wild. In some ways I feel then this show was tailor made for me! Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, adventure focused reality TV shows have declined. In comes World's Toughest Race. If you enjoy any of the above shows, you'll find something to enjoy here. Exotic locations, high production value, unique teams and dynamics, and arduous tasks, this is a great show to satiate that reality TV show itch I've been craving these past few months.

Truly Inspiring
sbassemier15 August 2020
The people stating the show focused only on American teams.... FALSE. They obviously did not watch every episode. I just binge watched ALL of the episodes. There are SO MANY teams from other countries that are well represented. The show allows you to get to know several different teams & their stories as to how/why they chose to compete in an Eco-Challenge. I went through many emotional ups & downs as I experienced the race with each team. The people are truly inspiring & possess a positive energy that is contagious. I couldn't stop watching! The physical & mental challenges that the participants overcome are truly amazing! I hope Amazon features future Eco-Challenges.

Inspirational, moving and fascinating
leboutaine22 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you like eco-challenge races, this is the show for you. There are people you will have heard of (legends like Nathan Fa'avae, Mike Kloser, Mark Macy, Marshall Ulrich and many more) as well as first-timers and those teams in-between. Eco-Challenge is quite frankly a ridiculous event. The elite teams make it look easy and even those at the very back make it look easier than what it is. The show may have some filler every now and then and its production is most certainly American, but it is genuine in conveying just how tough this event really is. If you're even slightly interested in the sport and hearing about why the teams that are there are there, then give it a watch. It has Bear Grylls in it too, so you can't go too wrong.

To counter some reviews I've seen:

22 out of the 66 teams that participated are from the USA. This is a USA production. Combine the two together and you get... you guessed it, more teams from the USA than any other country involved. I'm perplexed by these negative reviews banging on about this. Is the math that hard? It's easy to understand and it takes away exactly nothing from this show.

Also, a lot of other teams from other countries are given a decent amount of screen-time as we follow their journies:

Australia: Team Gippsland Adventur & Mad Myrs Brazil - Team Atenah Costa Rica - Team Costa Rica Estonia - Team Estonian ACE (earlier episodes) Fiji - Team Namako & Tabu Soro India - Team Khukuri Warriors New Zealand - Team New Zealand (favourites) Spain - Team Summit USA - Team Able Abels, Team Bend Racing, Team Curl, Team Endure, Team Iron Cowboy, Team Onyx, Team Out There, Team Stray Dogs & Team Unbroken

We don't even follow more than a third of the teams in this race. Why? Because it would be IMPOSSIBLE to do so. How would you go about filming and documenting every single (66) team's performance and then make a show to reflect all of those teams equally? It's absurd.

To other people moaning about the inspirational stories: We had a son assist his father who was suffering with Alzheimers. Another guy was running whose father killed himself. Another team made up of a man and his daughters, disabled army vets, a team of experienced racers over 60 years old etc... We also had the first all-black team in an eco-challenge, racing to raise awareness for LGBTQ as well as racial inequality. Another team consisting of two women from India to race for their equality.

If these things fail to resonate with you, I have to think the issue lies more with you than the show.

While the production may be 'Americanised' is it any wonder? It's a US production and most teams are from the country. And what does it take away from the experience? We are given inspirational stories to ponder whilst watching incredible athletes run themselves to the bone.

To anyone saying it looked easy... Are you crazy? The twin sisters who have scaled all major peaks including Everest called it far, far more challenging than reaching the summit of Everest (something only 5,000 people have done).

Another Ironman veteran said if you put 10 Ironman challenges back to back, this would be more difficult to do. I have absolutely NO idea what you're going on about - this looked incredibly difficult to do.

Also, did it occur to anyone else that those other teams who basically weren't shown didn't want to be on camera? Perhaps they wanted to do their own thing? Perhaps a lot of the 'foreign' teams didn't speak English? Or didn't want to be a part of the show? Quite a lot of people won't have the screen presence needed, either. There's probably more footage taken of other teams that was just rubbish. Notice how not ALL of the team members from one team are shown? Some stand out more than others. These reviews that claim only the USA teams were part of the show are completely baseless and shouldn't be seen as legitimate critiques of the show.

Anyone complaining about a team talking about racial, gender and sexual equality for like 30 seconds every now and then needs to take a look at themselves. Normal people do not participate in these kinds of races. They do not do well even if they were to. The kind of people who do this sort of thing are elite, healthy and inspired people. They often have something pushing them on. This is often cathartic. That's how it is.

I notice nobody is complaining about how much screen time Team New Zealand got at the start? They DOMINATE screen time in at least every other episode if not more. A lot of ignorant people are giving their opinions - don't listen to them.

I would like to know what those people criticising the show for having so many American teams would do differently. I really would.

Basically, a lot of people reviewing seem to be anti-American, anti-liberal, anti-equality and would potentially rather watch a show with zero flair focused on teams from other countries who potentially can't speak the language, don't want to be filmed and have zero screen-presence. Sounds like fun...

Rant over, even though I could go on.

More countries taking part then just the USA!
csharrop1 September 2020
99% of the show was concentrated solely on the USA... Why? There were 62 other teams from around the world. UK was seen once for half a second in the last episode, totally wasted series, could of been a great and none bias.

If your American you will enjoy and probably give it 10stars. Due to the biased editing I gave it 6 stars.

Very Inspiring
sbassemier15 August 2020
Loved watching these strong, courageous, & resilient teams compete in the race. For me, it wasn't really about the "race," but more about the obstacles & adversities the participants faced to COMPLETE the challenge. The people were truly inspiring & I loved watching the teams dig deep down to find the strength to push on despite difficult circumstances. I hope Amazon features more Eco-Challenges in the future! Enjoyed every episode!!!

Room to improve...
msexton1-159-66935218 August 2020
The racers are amazing and the race really is a testament to the human ability to preserver thru. A bit heavy on the backstories, but those are competitors they singled out pre-production I suppose. With 60 plus teams, need more exposure to the whole picture of what makes these athletes sign up and compete for such a race. once the 1st place team would have liked more filler on how they did it, what was their strategy for the win. Also, small glimpses of the HQ support element would have been good gill on just what it took to get all the shots with the teams. I have to presume some of the camera crews had to up their athletic game just to keep up, that would have been more interesting than some of the filler backstories on why some athletes were racing. Not much of anything on the prize or how significant this is in the overall world of endurance racing/adventures. What does it take to prepare, the cost associated with participating? Why does every team need to be co-ed? the series was fun to watch, but left more questions than answers in the end. In the end looking forward to the next race, but hope for more coverage and a wider scope of the event from more team coverage, to the production of the race. I want to watch the sporting element of the race, the strategies, the leaderboards (as someone mentioned) for the event, not interested in each participants justification for why, but rather how they are racing.

Thrilling, Entertaining and Inspiring... But the show is focused too much on the American teams.
siddhanth_april1516 August 2020
To start with this show is super entertaining and is a lot of fun ... Fiji is just beautiful and the show displayed the island in a beautiful way. The camera work is amazing and the hosting by Bear Grylls is Good too. All the challenges put forth seemed to be very demanding and it was interesting to see the participants conquer every task at their own pace and intellectual level. Any person who likes even a little bit of adventure will love watching this show. None of the episodes seemed boring however the last 3 episodes became a little less interesting as the winner of the race was announced on the 7th episode itself.

The only thing that i didn't like about the show is the amount of screen space that the American teams occupied. The backstories of certain teams were inspirational I agree but all the teams with an inspiring back story happened to be American and they ended up getting most of the screen time and to be honest, even certain American teams with not much of a backstory ended up getting more screen time than the other teams. The irony is that none of the American teams made it to the top 10 but despite the positions, all the American team got enough Screen time than any other. For example, there is a team called "The Able Abels" and this team quit in the middle of the race for no profound reason and still, you could see more of this team on the show than certain teams that made it to the top 10 and this is unfair. One could say that this is an American show and that's why the show was focused on the American teams but I would not agree because it doesn't make sense to invite teams from all around the world and keep focusing on the American teams just because the makers are Americans. If the makers wanted to display the American teams so badly then they might as well invited only the Americans to participate in the race.

having said this, The Worlds Toughest Race has every potential to become on the best adventure racing showers to be ever made and it all depends on if the makers are able to find a common ground from the next season and display teams irrespective of the country of origin in a fair manner. Looking forward to more of this show.

Massive adventure to watch, lacks coverage
lizewolmarans29 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic thrills, inspirational people and beautiful locations. Biggest critique is the lack of representation of covering all countries who participated. I was wondering why my native South Africa and UK didn't participate...so I googled. And they did. SA team actually came in 12th, but was never even shown. So next time-at least acknowledge all teams? They all worked really hard to be there.

Where is Canada??
christillion16 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of Canada's teams place in second and gets almost no screen time. Second place and no screen time. Probably not enough drama or sob stories for entertainment. People get injured, but we are given no update. The leaderboard is not shown. Teams get trapped in the ocean with an incoming storm. Sorry, you're screwed. Top team in first place capsizes? Sure. We'll get you a new canoe so you can still finish first.

But seriously. If you can't find time to feature all the teams, especially one who consistently in the top 6, why bother having that many teams?

Emotionally Powerful and Physically Brutal!
henryshear21 August 2020
All I needed to see was the name Mark Burnett for my interest to be piqued. The legendary producer behind Survivor, Amazing Race and other shows has created another hit series!

The show is not necessarily about the race. The show may seem like it is about the rugged terrain, harsh landscape or unbearable climate, but it is an emotional story at heart. There are teams racing for the LGBTQIA+ community, people afflicted with Alzheimers and disabilities to prove that anyone can do this. I myself was inspired to see these emotional stories.

I love Bear Grylls as well. I have long thought he has an iconic voice and he provides an energy, a zest that adds to the exciting feel of the show. Grylls interacts with the contestants and motivates them to keep pushing, to dare to dream.

He talks to all of these different countries from all over the world. I felt as if I was watching the Olympics, seeing the variety of diversity onscreen. I was amazed by the camaraderie and friendships that began as well. The show is heartwarming as it focuses on relationships, which is more heartfelt during this time of social isolation.

I definitely suggest the show. The series is able to capture human grit and what it takes to survive. I do not want to test myself in that way, but I respect everyone that did so. Watch the show and experience Eco-Challenge Fiji!!!

Watch all episodes- really enjoyed
whytewulf-6724624 August 2020
Amazing how many people watch one episode and say too American focused. First it is an American TV program and there were more American teams than others. But as the season progressed we heard more about Spain, India, Estonia, The two Fiji teams, NZ, Costa Rica Australia, Aus.. etc. i will say I wish I had more about some other teams.. not that i didn't want to hear less about the ones we heard from.

Also some say it didn't focus on the race.. not sure what you want. you have to introduce the teams. i don't want to see an hour of a team hiking. but again I will caveat and say. yes maybe a but more... longer episodes would have worked vs more.

Fiji is beautiful... good compelling stories.. inspiration....and a good race.. though a final run down episode would have been cool.

While it's by default - and by far - the best recent reality TV show, it's not without its flaws
gridoon202418 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With Survivor currently (and indefinitely) off the air, this Eco-Challenge is by default the only 2020 reality TV show worth seeing (although "Spy Games" was also cool and fun). Visually, it's a grand epic; emotionally, it's a testament to the human spirit and perseverance; socially, it's a great promo for women's equality (all the elite teams have at least one woman who keeps up with the men, while one of the top 10 teams even has a female captain). Narratively, is where the problems begin: it is definitely biased and selective, with a handful of teams (mostly of American origin) getting the lion's share of coverage, while others (including some of the strongest ones) get almost completely ignored. And then there is the rather big asterisk of (spoiler!) the winning team (a superb team, no doubt) receiving production help a few miles before the finish line - help without which it doesn't look like they would have finished at all, never mind finish first. That was certainly an unfair intervention. Still, even with some noticeable flaws, these 10 episodes are a journey worth taking. *** out of 4.

Team Onyx, first all African American + LGBTQ team... however they were totally useless. Difficult to watch Americans being typically over dramatic. Should have been much much better. So over Woke America.

I loved the course and stories, but hated the "Mark Burnett"ing of it all
marcssubs24 August 2020
I binge watched the whole thing, but nonetheless I only give it 3 stars.

I loved seeing the course that the competitors were competing on, and it was great to witness the trials and tribulations that many went through, as well as the back stories on team members. What I could have done without though was the "Mark Burnett"ing of it all wherein he made it mimic an episode of Surivor ---- the dramatic music, the giant gold medallions, the way the camera approached the tiki torches, the shots of Bear in the helicopter who tried to add a bunch of hype by the way he spoke .... the overall feel of the editing / finished product seemed to cheapen the actual experience; I would have preferred to have more of a documentary feel to it. Also, the number of episodes and the amount of time to watch was just way more than it should have taken. Doing this documentary style could have easily shaved off about 30% of the viewing time. If the Eco-Challenge continues in the future, I will watch it again only if it is NOT Mark Burnett who is the producer.

It's godo
joewilric13 August 2021
People are right, there isn't enough coverage of all the teams, but if you think of the cost of following these teams with a camera crew it's somewhat understandable - this is a production monstrosity.

They could, however, mitigate for this by having at least more leaderboard coverage and just pinpoint them on the maps and chat to them at check points. This broader coverage feels missing and this feels more like a documentary on a few teams rather than really understanding what the whole race is... I don't feel I really knew what happened in the overall event. A shame because what is there is excellent, I like the drama, graphics are great, just yeah, need a sports director to be working on this and give us better broader coverage to compliment what's there.

Great race, pathetic editing
Fritz_Deelman22 August 2020
Incredible feats of endurance by the contestants, 10 stars for that. But the editing is one of the worst and most biased I've seen in the already pathetic genre of reality TV. They focused on about 10 teams out of 66 for most of the race, who had some back story they could endlessly bring up for emotional effect. They never even showed some of the top teams or their finish at the crossing line. Extremely disappointing editing, not worthy of this great race and it's contestants.

Awesome show with real heart
lankyalun19 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First off I'd like to say the beginning is undoubtedly the USA show, with almost all the teams they focus on being American. Thankfully after the American teams fell further back into the race/dropped out we get to see a great breadth of nationalities - the invincible NZ, AUSTRALIANS, India and Spain to name a few.

The show has some great personal stories like the father and son teeam where the father has Alzheimers, the Brazilian team that are racing because one of their team mates died of cancer 5 years before the race etc.

The race really is the toughest race on earth and is undoubtedly one of the most gruelling challenges around and we go through the ups and downs with the teams throughout. One thing is for sure, I will never attempt this race!
