The British television production grew to £2.7B (Us$3.5B) – its highest ever level largely thanks to a boom in commissions from global Svod services such as Netflix and YouTube.
The figures have been published as part of the annual census published by the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (Pact), and put together by consulting firm Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates.
The sector increased from £2.59 billion in 2016 to £2.74 billion in 2017. This was helped by a £77M boost in international TV revenue, including revenues from British producers producing shows for U.S. cable broadcasters and networks, and a £49M boom in domestic commissions for broadcasters including the BBC and Channel 4.
Primary international commissions, which grew from £468M in 2016 to £549M in 2017, remained the most prominent area of growth in the UK production sector. Revenue generated by commissions from standalone digital services rose to £150M, accounting for roughly one-third of international commissions income.

YouTube Premium is to debut 50 original series in 2019 and has got a range of celebrity-driven formats in development with producers of “all shapes and sizes”.
Luke Hyams, head of originals, YouTube, Emea, lifted the lid on the Google-owned company’s content drive in Europe, Middle East and Africa, at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.
Hyams revealed that it will launch these 50 shows next year, alongside its 65 existing originals and specials, in a variety of different ways, including putting some episodes up for free, while also balancing between full series binge drops and weekly episodes.
He told producers in the UK that he wants to work with local content, highlighting its recent Fulwell 73-produced series Training Days with Jack Whitehall, that can “take us into a new world” and The Sidemen Show. He also premiered a short clip from its forthcoming big-budget sci-fi drama Origin, which is produced by The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures.

YouTube Premium had a busy June, releasing creator-driven original programs like Liza On Demand, season three of Escape The Night, F2: Finding Football, and The Sidemen Show. Despite that wave of activity, the $11.99-per-month subscription service doesn't appear to slowing down anytime soon. Trailers have arrived for two more of its upcoming series: One is a documentary about the history of the hip-hop subculture known as "G-funk," while the other is a relationship comedy titled Sideswiped.
G Funk, as the documentary is called, will explore its titular genre, which had its defining elements laid out in the third verse of Warren G's "Regulate." That song, naturally, is featured prominently in the G Funk trailer, which also shows snippets of interviews with Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C., and other members of the g-funk movement.
