crime thriller falters
SnoopyStyle3 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Struggling ride-share driver Ethan (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is trying to raise his rebellious younger sister Mia as her sole guardian. Crime lord Kaden (Mickey Rourke) becomes his customer. He gets suspended at his job. Mia comes home distressed one night. She reveals that she's in debt to criminals for $20k.

This is somewhat interesting but I'm not sold on it. I like Ethan's character at first but his crazed super-fighting in the last section feels out of place. It's coming from a different type of movie. I get his progression but he falters after awhile. The death is a mistake. It would work better to do a kidnapping instead. It's not like he doesn't get to a kidnapped girl in the last act. I don't mind Mickey Rourke's character but I question him using a ride-share program. If he's powerful enough, he would have his own driver. This movie wants to do something amazing but it's not quite at that level. I also don't like some of the filmmaking choices. Expectations may be too high but the inability to achieve them causes this to fail.

Mickey Rourke's Hairline
lucas73926 March 2021
Yes, that distinctive join between Mickey Rourke's hair management system and his scalp is the most riveting part of this film, the rest is just a poor facsimile of a terrible film. I don't know what acting method the lead actor used but i'm guessing it was half an hour doing elvis poses in his underpants before each shoot.

This film mercilessly puts its boot on the neck of quality and presses down hard.

Perverse
omendata23 April 2021
Well what can we say but no just no! Film looks like it has been directed by a music video producer, dreadfully inappropriate soundtrack, terrible acting from everyone concerned with the exception of the lead character. A freakishly ogrish and unstable performance as usual from Mickey Rourke and Lou Diamond Phillips thrown in for some poster cred.

Lame revenge story re-tread; director pops up for a forgettable performance as some drug dealing n'eer do well and all the bad guys are about as scary as a flip flop although I must say Mickey's syrup was quite a frightening thing to behold, I nearly messed my pontaloons on more than one occasion due to his ill fitting syrup...It is not even funny anymore.

Terrible waste of digital film and your valuable film watching time - Not even Christmas yet but out come the turkeys.

Best comedy of the year by far.
I actually created an account for this. This is the best comedy of the year by far. Top notch acting. 🤣🤣🤣 The crowbar scenes were some of the best ever. I recommend this movie to get through these trying times. Go on give yourself a belly laugh. You won't regret it! 😄🤙

Mickey, WTF?
joelbergsman22 May 2021
Sad to see Mickey Roark in such a bad flick. As one other reviewer said, the crowbar scenes (which were many) were the high spots The middle-level drug dealer, who was stoned all the time and, I assume, didn't need to act at all, was so unbelievably bad, he was funny.

Actually, if you like B- noir and have nothing better to do, it's not the worst way to pass a little time. But, a good movie it ain't.

Another Drug Deal Gone Bad
westsideschl28 May 2021
Still another vigilante going after drug dealers after a drug deal gone bad. The usual, not too likely, one against many fight scenes. But, on a positive note, a little bit twisty, and the acting was good (especially the baddies).

Intense, psychology thriller Had me on the edge
vmrdawg15 March 2021
Hats off to the entire cast they brought their A-game and dropped the Mic on us. I was on the edge of my bed watching to see what shoe was about to drop. Great direction, best acting, great action scenes wrapped up in this modern day gangsta drama.

Adverse slow burn thriller
Alynnsinn16 March 2021
Just saw this film. Seeing as to how users react to this film, they are either extremist one way or the other. But the reality is it's not bad and it's not excellent. It's slightly above average and something I would expect to come from Grindstone. Although I will say it is slightly better than their other stuff. That is why it gets a 6 rating from me. The acting, directing, writing is all a little above average. The campaign is misleading. The trailer makes you believe that it's a nonstop action piece but it's more a slow burn drama up until towards the end. I read that Mickey Rourke is mumbling his lines but because I understand people who have cancer and put on mediations, I felt that was brilliantly acted. The production values are decent except some of the cgi blood. There are lots of great locations so it doesn't feel trapped or shot with 1 or 2 locations. The other surprise for me is that Mickey is in this film alot whereas I'm used to seeing him have a small cameo here or there and that is what I expected.

Riddled with clichés still keeps the interest up
shide_8526 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1 star for being close enough to make a solid movie

In shorter: The at time horrible acting mixed with solid moments or moments where the bad acting makes it feel a tad more realistic makes up for an overall ok experience.

If you are looking for a mid-high budget action, this isn't it. This is a decent low budget crime/thriller with cliché ridden plotline that still doesn't feel that unoriginal somehow.

In longer: Some of the effects (some of the gore and most of the lighting) is ok or even good and costume feels on point. It also tries to use the sound to convey the mixed emotions of the lead (as done better in many other movies; like spun 2002 with Rourke in it, but still strikes onto that tone clearly enough), which would have worked better without the dialect that in some scenes strangely work but in others simply doesn't work.

This lacks a tad in most departments from being really good, but theyre close to reaching over the hump and on a low budget that isn't bad. This movie feels a little rushed at some parts (CGI parking house?), but if the director is helped with time management or given more time the end resault could possibly have been better.

Scenography overall is quite good as mentioned for a low budget movie. This movie needed some nicer shots though, with drones being inexpensive that could have given it a feeling of being a tad higher in the budget department.

Pro's Not that far from being over the hump in several categories, shame it didn't reach it Bad acting and weird accent choice makes some scenes over the top enough to feel realistical.

Con's Acting; up and down with a strange accent choice Capturing the moment, some camera angles could have been picked better.

CGI.

Hard to watch...

... if you remember Mickey Rourke in 9 1/2 Weeks, Diner, and Angel Heart. In that respect, this is simply heartbreaking. BTW, the movie itself is awful.

I love Mickey Rourke but this movie didn't do him justice. Great cast and story line but poor graphics. You just need to watch the movie to understand.

The all-star cast sucked me in...
andi-8928821 March 2021
And that's all it was... an all-star cast. I won't even call it that. It's a cast of actors I personally love. But man!!! It was hard to watch.

weird, typical, unique
NijazBaBs12 May 2021
This is one of those typical thrillers and crimes filled with negativity like debts, revenge, drugs, desperation. Few meaningful realistic emotions of relationship, few bad memories, few realistic common things like trying to be better. Reminds me of personal issues and issues I witness around me in real life. Unique because I first see actors like these, they looks somehow like they have not slept, like in a dream, or on drugs, or some different nation. Different than most actors. Bit too amateur and funny, but still good looking stunts of killing, almost like dream of video game. Simple and fast. But the story, the explanation, the details, the camera are not perfect. Bit too close up recording, too sudden or random, too sudden unprovoked or quick events, sometimes emotionless. So negativity, darkness, lack of clarity, and rush is what makes this far from perfect. Can't be compared to some of best thrillers where everything flows naturally, with slower transitions, more depth and provocation and explanation. Overall not good, just typical thriller and crime with few unique features. I expected more realistic graphics, story, and sense of all of it.

Could Have Been Better
mariebarmstrong-1860624 March 2021
This had the potential to be a really good movie but it fell short. The graphics were bad and the acting between some of the high profile names was disappointing and emotionally lacking. I will say Matt Ryan killed his part and was probably the best actor in this film, though his name isn't listed anywhere in the headlines. If his part hadn't ran through most of the movie I would have lost interest and not finished watching it.

Loved it. Showed a side of Los Angeles we're not accustomed to. Mickey Rourke is in this film alot! I expected him to only have a cameo. Fun to see the other cast pop up. They all do a decent job in this film!

Liked it but want more (in a good way)
sethspeaksnet10 March 2021
I watched this movie because I saw that cast (Nicholas, Rourke, Phillips, Astin, Keegan) and figured I would enjoy it. It ended up being even better than I thought it would be.

Beyond the cast, I enjoyed the relationship between Ethan and Mia, Ethan and Chloe. I really liked the drama. I enjoyed the relationship between Ethan and Kaden, and the surprising vulnerability shown. I thought the movie flowed pretty well also. Nicholas as the lead was fantastic. Again, surprised me how well he played the role, and made it look easy, natural. Rourke was fantastic.

But at the end, I wanted more. I wondered if it could be a series or even a TV action/drama (minus the swearing, depending on the network). I would LOVE to have better understood Ethan's background, his relationships previously (with mother, sister, wife). I'd love to know more about Kaden's background. I want to see what the future holds for Ethan and others. I think it'd be interesting to see the after effects of the movie's climatic events, police investigations, drama. I think there is a lot yet to unpack.

What was the purpose of this?
bellino-angelo20142 March 2023
ADVERSE is not exactly the movie you would think of if you want to watch a great movie. It has a score of 4,2 and many negative reviews, and being a big glutton for punishment myself I knew that I had to see it. Last December I saw it and despite I had hopes that it could have been at least decent, it wasn't worth the ride. Please read my text for understanding my rant better.

Ethan (Thomas Nicholas) is a taxy driver that has the job apparently going well. This changes when he discovers that his sister owes money to a dangerous crime syndicate and he is targeted by Kaden (Mickey Rourke) and his men up until the sister finds the money.

I am a thriller and action fan and my hopes were high on that factor. Instead, the shooting scenes were apparently for the sake of having blood splattered and they were very forgettable as well. And seeing Rourke, Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin and Penelope Ann Miller in such a mess is quite embarassing... they are there for few minutes and their occasional lines.

A bit too bloody and not that memorable, just like eating a sandwich of only bread. Only of interest for occasional bad movie watchers or fans of some of the cast members.

Awful !
ianclarke3408 January 2022
I cannot believe some people are giving this such glowing reviews, there is nothing good about this !

I don't mind a low budget film but I do like to see original material, this appears to be a rehashed old story that somebody decided to throw at a few wannabe actors and stick a camera in front of them to see what happened !

Mickey Rourke's character carries a walking stick to help him balance but never uses it, instead he chooses to lean on cars or walls or furniture or anything instead of his cane, where's the sense in that ?

It's very depressing and that mood is accentuated by the stark lighting and dismal soundtrack, they couldn't have made it any less appealing !

I stopped watching before the final showdown because you know exactly what will happen next throughout the entire film, it is completely predictable with no surprises !

People owe money to the gang, gang takes action, heroes sister is involved, hero takes revenge !

That's the entire plot in 16 words !

Don't waste your time !

Where's my money?
nogodnomasters12 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ethan (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is on parole and works as a ride share. He also has custody of his 16-year old sister Mia (Kelly Arjen) who is quite the hand full. She gets into trouble with the wrong people. Ethan must resort to his old ways.

Not sure how he got custody on parole. Plot had some wholes. Mickey Rourke has been making the rounds. This role is a long fall from grace for Sean Astin and Lou Diamond Phillips. It is a film you can pass on and not feel you have missed anything.

Guide: F-word. Brief nudity, No sex.

nicola-yang25 January 2022
A cameraless uber driver with invincible wrench vs old dumb Mickey Rourke, zombie faces acting, a easy lazy stroy flavored with serious background music.

All decent achievement you can imagine are done.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Adverse
burlesonjesse521 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Nothing personal, just strictly business". No someone's not getting fired. It's more like they're about to meet their maker. Ouch.

Anyway, 2020's Adverse is my latest review. It was released in February of last year and is distributed by Eagle Films. Brian A. Metcalf helms Adverse as a threatening LA story. Without filter, his pic is filled with drug addicts, crime lords, multiple deaths by tire iron, and remorseless henchmen. Adverse is well, "perverse".

Adverse is about an unwashed ride share driver named Ethan (Thomas Ian Nicholas). Ethan is guardian to his kid sister Mia (played by Kelly Arjen). When Mia owes a lot of money to the wrong people ($10,000 plus interest), Ethan is forced to smooth over the feeble situation and off a few bad guys along the way.

Nicholas in the lead really disappears into character. His Ethan is rattled, short-fused, galled, and full of intense stares. This is not the same dude from American Pie and Rookie of the Year mind you. And even though his performance is a little strained and over the top, you gotta admire the campy commitment.

In truth, if you like a flick with a well-known cast of cameos (Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin, Penelope Ann Miller, director Metcalf), then Adverse is your cup of tea. And if you like a flick with a well-known cast of squalid side characters (Mickey Rourke, an unrecognizable Andrew Keegan), then you might get a kick out of Adverse's need to make these actors feel relevant again. Finally, if you like your crime thrillers slightly neo-noir while bloody to the max, then Adverse will give you your cinematic, needled fix (no puns I swear).

Watching Adverse, I was somehow reminded of 2011's Drive. Too bad Adverse lacks Drive's breakneck style, 80s vibe, more focused story, and better use of a nastier villain. Sorry Mickey Rourke. I still love ya though.

Fun Ride after a slow start.
chrisdquinn10 March 2021
I'll be honest. The first 20 minutes of this film really struggled to get off the ground. Some of the dialogue really stuck out as forced or over the top. I found myself not believing some of the characters and maybe felt the development and backstory wasn't fully hashed out. Over the top just for the sake of being over the top. I found that as the movie progressed, however, the flow changed. As the action ramped up, so did the believability. I love myself some crime/action/drama type films and this provided all of that for me by the end. Thomas Nicholas really stood out to me, as this seemed to be a full 180 from what I'm familiar with of his work. I always love to see actors broaden the horizon and take on different roles, so that was refreshing for me. Mickey Rourke was great as he is in most projects and really brought the film some dimension. I honestly loved Matt Ryan's character throughout the whole piece and really didn't know too much about him before hand. This will lead me down his imdb page tonight.

The younger actors that I was not too familiar with all seemed to be a bit forced and left me wanting more, but i expect that from indie films, and almost find it charming usually. Though this fell just short of that mark for me. I really felt that the stars and known actors really carried most of the scenes, which makes them seem unauthentic when one has to push harder than the others.

The film overall gave me a feeling of suspense throughout and did keep me wanting more until the very end. If you enjoy a fast paced, action packed revenge story, fight through the slow start, and ride the wave to the finish.
