Missing the Pixar Flare
Batman_Go_Bananas12 July 2021
If you are looking for some wholesome, fairly comedic entertainment for the kids, look no further. But if you are jumping into this hoping for a worthy follow-up to the first two films, with the same charm and wit, you won't find it here. This show lacks the heart, soul, and compelling characters that pixar is known for (Maybe because Pixar didn't even do this show *cough* *cough*), and instead comes across as an average disney channel film follow-up.

Fans of the original film should like this
CubsandCulture9 August 2021
This plays very much like a family friendly version of a work place comedy-i.e. The Office, Parks and Rec etc.-and it has enough laughs per minute to make worthwhile to watch. I also like that the show manages to work in a pretty mature theme-i.e. Trying to build a life after your job is rendered obsolete-to rest the entire show on. It works well with the original film's theme of scream shortages standing in for peak oil.

The animation is clearly TV production but it is Pixar quality as well.

Good but big problems
shakedatjunk8 July 2021
This show is awesome when Mike and Sully are on screen and when they're on the laugh floor and when discussing the business. The protagonist is relatable and likable. But everything about MIFT, and the over the top physical "comedy" is absolutely atrocious.

The maturity level for this show is not on the level of the movie at all and it is disappointing.

Also the animation looks especially cheap for everything including Mike. Sully still looks great and the backgrounds are solid but everything else looks pretty bland.

The only things keeping me watching are Mike n Sully, the business itself and the atmosphere of the facility, and the familiarity/nostalgia. Right now it's a 7 for me but I can see it getting worse if MILT stays prominent.

Monsters at Work could use some work
Wookie_Wookie7 July 2021
I along with many loved the original Monsters Inc. For taking the concept of the ole' monsters in your closet myth we all used to believe when we were young and building it into a unique world with likable and funny characters. For the most part, currently we're only 2 episodes in, Monsters at Work needs to work on what worked with the original, the world building is solid with callbacks from the 2001 film and Monster University that anyone who liked the films will enhance the experience. Monsters at Works' comedy is the main flaw with the series, there are funny jokes don't get me wrong but there are a lot jokes that didn't get a chuckle out of me which is kinda surprising for Pixar who has proven track record with comedy. Both Monster films are consistently funny in my opinion and to see this not quite hit the mark is little surprising since they've done it for 2 films already, might just be the first 2 episodes but it felt like they weren't firing on all cylinders. That's the main flaw but some other minor flaws would be Sully kinda feeling out of character, few of the character designs feel uninspired granted with good designs to make up for it like Duncan, but overall the series can be good but if the comedy is not going to improve then that would be a shame because I want this to do good. Also credit to the animators as the animation looks great for tv and this may be the fist series to truly do full smooth cgi for an entire series so that's a step forward!

Off to a solid yet shaky start
BoxwoodExpress7 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's been 20 years since the original Monsters Inc and 8 years since Monsters University. And we've been waiting four years for this show to come out. I watched the first two episodes, and while they were quite solid, they have a few problems. Allow me to break them down.

-Mike and Sulley don't appear that much. Mike is made the new CEO of Monsters Inc, with a new focus on monsters making kids laugh rather than scream. If you watched the original movie, the two had legitimate problems with scaring children, so this development makes sense. So while we do see them, most of the focus is on Tylor, a new employee.

-This wouldn't be a problem, but Tylor isn't that interesting to me. He's very much a blank slate for the viewers to project on, since he's the new guy and is confused about the new initiative by the company to be funny, much like the audience might be.

-The animation. It seems a bit rough at times, but I'll let it slide because TV budgets are way smaller than movie budgets.

-Now let's talk about the things I do like. I like the return of several fan-favorites, such as Roz, Celia Mae, and Smitty and Needleman. There's some unintended comedy in the show that got a good chuckle out of me. And the original jazz theme music is back, as well as the Art Deco style animation for the title card and credits.

This show has a lot of potential despite its flaws, so I will tune in for more episodes.

Just fine but a little too safe
Darwinskid28 July 2021
There isn't anything particularly wrong with this series, it's technically well-made, the new characters are defined well and stand on their own pretty good compared to the ones from the original Pixar movie and prequel and there is a fine balance of humor and heart. The only problem is that the series so far just feels like it exists just to...Exist. Nothing more, and nothing less. Subversion and social commentary are what Pixar is known for, but there is little of that here, of the episodes released so far I have only encountered one scene in one episode that felt pretty heavy in drama that brought that Pixar kind of flair to it. I do like the expansion of the Monsters, Inc. World but still feel that we are only seeing tiny glimpses of what else it can present with this series, hopefully they decide to go a bit bigger in scale as it progresses.

Laugh Out Loud Funny!!
josiahliljequist7 July 2021
Okay everyone, finally Disney has got a show going right. The focus with this show (so far) is not world-building or any agenda, but actually making a FUNNY show! In the first two episodes I think I laughed more than in all their marvel show episodes combined so far. The "chemistry" (if it can be called that in animation) is fantastic between the voice actors, and the dialogue is sharp and snappy. This reminds me of Emperor's New Groove Disney, and I think that's one of the highest compliments I can give it!! It really is hilarious, and surprisingly most of the laughs come from the new characters--not Mike and Sully (though they're awesome too). Please give this show a chance if you want to laugh!!

Likeable characters and fun series
groovy_chick95425 July 2021
I think its a great spin on the two films Still has charm and wit of the movies.. had plenty of laughs and smiles!

Not sure why some reviews are so harsh.. ive seen terrible spin on offs of movies from the 90's and 00's that were terrible! I don't think this series falls under that category

Give it a shot!

It's okay...
rocketwoods7 July 2021
We're only two episodes in and I still want answers! There's definitely some charm and laughter to it but given it's a sequel series, I thought it would be for us. Mainly for the kiddos and im not tripping over it. Just wish it got the 'Incredibles 2' treatment and was meant for the grown ups lol. Overall, it's a great series and leaves off where the first film left it. Cant wait for new episodes!

Charming and fun!
disneyphille8 August 2021
As a HUGE fan of the original movie, this show brings a smile to my face. The characters (new and old) are charming and seeing them get into shenanigans is fun.

Fun but doesn't quite have that spark...
pritol26 July 2021
It's a very fun series that will be greatly enjoyed by younger viewers. The animation is spectacular, and it's nice to see some familiar old characters re-appear.

Unfortunately the new characters just aren't as easy to warm too as the original characters, and can at times be quite annoying. The stories are fun, but they just don't pull you in as much as the original movie.

Again it's lovely to be back in the Monsters Inc world, but the TV series just doesn't have the spark of the original and is a little hit and miss.

Pretty good

I was really happy to see some of the same people doing the voices. Love John Goodman and Billy Crystal. Good childrens show with some things adults can appreciate also.

It's not my monsters. Give freedom Pixar
denhom8 July 2021
Whyyyyyyyy? Why spoil art? Disney's work frankly looks boring, new characters are not sympathetic. Hate Disney for this. Return Freedom Pixar. The real rating is 5, just so as not to spoil the rating I put 7 cus love universe of full-length cartoons.

Definitely for the Younger Audiences
ramo1407 July 2021
It's an alright show but it's definitely geared towards the younger audiences with not much to engage the older fans of the original.

In Between
AnimatedCritic7 July 2021
This show starts decent, but isn't as good as Monsters Inc, but Better than MU. The concept is fun, with Monsters Inc heading toward laughs instead of scares, but it gets stale at times. Mike and Scully are back, and are loveable as when we first saw them, but the new characters are a mixed bag for me. Some of them can be funny, yet some are annoying at times. Overall decent new show that need some work.

Sorry Mike and Sully...
dburris-4593315 September 2021
When I heard about a sequel to the classic 2001 film Monster's inc. I was so excited to watch it. But also scared, I didn't want it to ruin the great value of its predecessor. As soon as it's first episode was released, It was slow for me and thought "okay. First episode is slow and bland but hopefully it'll pick up." I was wrong...the episodes kept getting cheesier and boring by the minute. I could tell that they were aiming towards the little ones because it was getting corny and more kid friendly and not really building it up as it's predecessor did. The episodes kept getting more lame and dragged on with some bad one liners in my opinion. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed an episode or two but it just doesn't live up to it's predecessor.

Kids are gonna love it
adlhaniyeh1 September 2021
This series is not as good as the movies Monsters Inc. And Monsters University, but it doesn't mean that it's all bad. There are some funny moments, and it's great to hear the familiar voices of John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Jennifer Tilly as their loveable characters.

I'm sure the younger generations will love and enjoy it. I loved the movies as a kid and would definitely watch the entire series bacause of the nostalgic sense of it.

It's okay
zvmjxfqy17 April 2024
This is a good watch. Not a top pick though. I don't think it really captures the magic of the first two films. The new characters aren't as interesting as the older ones. I was hoping it would show more of Mike and sulley. I was so disappointed when it introduced this new character Tylor. He's a basic guy who expects a lot. He's not an ideal protagonist, I find he's annoying. It's not all bad though, the show is good for some laughs and Val is a good character. Still this is a good show to watch with kids after the first two. Don't get your hopes up though. But if you haven't seen the first two then go watch them right now!

Really good
kristianpj28 July 2021
I see other reviewers on here like 'this is definitely for the younger audience' like that's a bad thing! Stop watching kid shows expecting to be entertained you idiots. This show is wholesome and funny, my 6 year old loves it.

We all know what would've made this 10 times better...
jillianross-964647 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
My very first initial thought was, "Alright where's Boo? I need to see Sully and Boo together again after the heartbreak of the original movie." And after watching the only first two episodes, and upon further research, it it said that Boo will NOT be featured in this new series. THAT is such a big disappointment in itself. Cause come on, that's what we all wanted to see right??

Other than Boo not showing, I will say I do love that they have Billy Crystal and John Goodman back as the roles of Mike and Sully, it makes the quality of the show so much better having them. Although, they are basically side characters to the new characters that they brought for the show, so you don't really see them as much.

As far as the whole plot revolving around the new characters, I really don't get it, there is really no point to their job which I guess is the point of the main character to dream of working his way up to the "Laugh Floor" but it doesn't seem like a plot that could go anywhere.

It was pretty funny as far as kid show's go, and it did have a similar feel to the movies as the animation style is very similar. With a little work this could be a pretty good kid's show, I won't give up on it just yet.

I still wish Boo was in it :( imagine them working Boo into the story and having her help them learn what makes kids laugh while also learning more about her character.. would've been so cute.

A great addon to the Monster's universe of movies
Mcduff360112 July 2021
As of this review there have only been 2 episodes but I was so thrilled with the quality of them I had to write a review. We watched this as a family and have watched the previous Monster's In and Monster's University. This show blends the two together really well.

It seems all the old voice actors from the movies have continued their role in this show with some new additions. Even though Mike and Sully are characters it's really about the main character Tylor who wants to become a scarer right at the time the monster world finds out it's laughter that will save them. He gets put in with the misfit group, much like the plot of University.

Very enjoyable as an adult to watch and highly entertaining for the kiddos. Would totally recommend this one to anyone who liked the previous movies.

I'm not really feeling it with these first two episodes...
daviddevilliers548 July 2021
This is okay so far. While it does a few things well, like calling back to Monsters University and showing what happened in the time gap in the end of the first movie, how monsters went from scary to funny, the execution is very... eh... so far. I just don't feel any connection to the main character, and I don't like the idea of Mike and Sulley being secondary characters. Tyler, the main character, is just not interesting and feels way more like a blank slate for the audience which, in my opinion, is the worst thing for movies and shows. And the other supporting characters are just too much for me to handle. I will keep watching as there's still hope it could get better but I don't know, I'm just not feeling this.

its fine
djurrepower21 September 2021
Big gamle to shift focus on a new character with a new setting. It expands the universe, but overall it wasn't that interesting. It's a fine series, but maybe a litttle plain for my liking.

6/10: sure.
