From comedy to satire
valimar-883524 October 2018
South Park has always been a blend of comedy and satire, but this season the emphasis has been heavily on dark satire while tackling very controversial subjects in a way that only this show can. Obviously there is nothing funny about school shootings or child abuse cover ups, but South Park satirizes our reactions to them and gets laughs out of the absurdity.

The ironic #cancelsouthpark hashtag implies they are going to be pushing the boundaries throughout this season even by their own standards. The show has changed from what it used to be. If you miss the random zaniness of the very early seasons you won't like it, if you appreciate the show's unique ability to skewer our culture then you will enjoy.

'Red Hot Catholic Love' sixteen years later...
DarthVoorhees10 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
'South Park' is always timely to the point where you can revisit episodes later and get a slice of life and current events from the air date. The world has gone through a lot of changes in the 21 years of 'South Park' which is why it is so unfortunate that the Catholic Church seems worse since the 2002 episode 'Red Hot Catholic Love'. 'Red Hot Catholic Love' is in my opinion an episode that could be considered one of the best of the entire series. In the episode Father Maxi discovers he is the only priest in all of Catholicism who is not a pedophile. The town soon becomes the kind of atheists who spend all their bragging about their atheism( the subplot has everyone " spewing crap out of their mouths") . The warm conclusion is that everyone agrees that the bible should be more of a recommendation on how to live instead of a translation of power. In 2002 this was on point as the scandal was shocking and raw. In 2018 "A Boy and a Priest" is appealing to an audience so jaded that the approach to the humor is one of apathy as it holds up a mirror to a cynical audience.

This is a better episode than 'Dead Kids' because it uses the same type of humor and commentary in a crazier fashion. The Catholic Church has become nothing more than a joke to the residents of South Park. The community only goes to church so they can laugh at it and make pedophile jokes. It's lost all it's power. I laughed a lot. These moments are the best of the episode. The best comedy always brings a person or institution full of themselves down a peg and 'South Park' has made that kind of humor it's bread and butter. Father Maxi eventually closes the church and Randy begs the archdiocese to get him back because he still has some zingers he needs to use.

The rest of the episode isn't quite as funny but the story is engaging. I like Butters and how innocent he is. He is completely oblivious to the world around him and befriends Maxi because he is being bullied. What follows is an episode of people getting the wrong impression about their relationship. The scandal has gotten so bad that these jokes don't quite have the bite they might have.

At the end Maxi directly acknowledges 'Red Hot Catholic Love' and says his conclusion and appeal to the audience is no longer valid. The church is too corrupt to be considered good. He is the good apple in a barrel of bad ones. I don't know if 'South Park' can do another commentary on this. The fact that the Catholic priest harbors molesters isn't shocking, it's just a tragic norm like gun violence. I wonder if this cynicism and acceptance of these horrible societal ills will become a recurring theme this season.

Kind of liked it
jwwalrath-227-854875 October 2018
I felt like the third act worked well and really tied everything together. Also, Randy has a great one-liner in this. However, the first two acts just kinda replayed the same few bits over and over without much variety.

THIS is South Park
tylerward-135235 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
While I enjoyed Dead Kids, I can't help but feel that THIS was WAY better. They made not only Butters' character more likeable, but Priest Maxi. The plot and jokes were on point and this feels like a sequel to Red Hot Catholic Love, an episode in Season 6. Infact, Maxi even mentioned the episode saying something about going to the Vatican and keeping his mouth shut about the whole thing. The way Butters treated Father Maxi showed the best in his character. Even when everyone else didn't want Priest Maxi around, Butters still stuck with him. Also, the clean up crew was HILARIOUS. Watching the clean up crew trying to locate Maxi was really funny and entertaining as well. THIS is how to make a South Park episode. And because of all that I've said above, I'm giving this episode a 10/10 just because of all the things it does so well. Good job Trey & Matt.

Mediocre but not bad
martijnkersten4 October 2018
The episode was sporadically funny. The theme is probably not the greatest because it is already "overused", but it doesnt make the episode bad. I like how they separated the episodes, like they did before season 19. Very exciting about how this season is going to develop!

South Park is Nearing The End
marcigabrielle7 January 2019
I think this may be their last season. They've poked fun at everything, and now they are holding the mirror to the people who watch them: everything sucks, but you suck too. You got used to all the bad things everybody around you happens.

Ah well, we have to take it and watch the last episodes, we're doing penance like the priest at the end, who understands the joking is deserved.

Also, keep an eye on Butters. He's the anti-Cartman, and towards the end of this series run is emerging as the greatest character. Cartman gave us the cynicism, the funny evil, the demolishing aspect of this show, showing everything sucks.

Butter is the opposite, the candid, foolish innocence that is invincible because is so good. The cynical ones appear unbreakable, but it's the good-kid-at-heart who is truly invincible. Maybe there is a recipe there for getting rid of the social ennui typical of the last 20 years.

You didn't laugh watching this episode WOW how can you like season 20 or season 21 its getting so much better now I do agree that rehashing the same joke and some of the church scenes were repetitive but come on that is the only half negative about this episode I think its gearing up to be one of the better seasons also what other animated show is there to watch besides big mouth and rick and morty and big mouth is hilarous some people say its child pornography but you can not say that the tweek and Craig stuff isn't overall I would give this episode a ten and the last one a 9.5 but I am so excited for the rest of the season and south park is still going strong and isn't going anywhere hopefully #cancelsouthpark hopefully it is just a meme like everyone is saying and everyone is acting like is and hopefully its not gonna be cancelled but for the memes #CancelSouthPark

South Park, you can do MUCH better!
alexbb-531546 October 2018
South Park had some really great epsiodes so far, but the last two epsiodes (and most of last season) are simply boring and stupid - not funny stupid - only repetitive and boring. South Park, you can do MUCH better! PS: please save the fake ratings on imdb, nobody would give the last two episodes a 10/10 - never.

Warning: Spoilers
Once again they're showing serious problems that priests raping kids in funny way. Like priest playing with cards, Vatican hiding all sins made by the priests. The cleaning team was hilarious. Top phrases: "It's 8 years old boy birthday party of course it's cum" and "Should we call a police or buy some condoms" :D made me laugh.

Season 22 is a lot more better than last year!
RobTheUnknown8 October 2018
I have to admit, the new season of South Park is getting a lot more better! Unlike last year season when it was so boring and too much political crap!

Season 22 is bringing back the old South Park style! With hilarious non-PC humor! :) And I still hope that the next new episodes are remain better, just like last week episode.

Keep up the work Matt and Trey! :)

Cringeworthy
baskher8 November 2018
Could not watch more than 5 minutes before skipping to the next episode. I'm not even christian or religious and still found this episode extremely banal. Priest jokes are so old, such a tasteless episode coming right after a hilarious one about school shootings setting the bar so high was a big mistake.

Not their best
hyattash127 October 2018
South Park is usually topical, was this? The issues with the Catholic priesthood are how many years old? Five, maybe ten, years ago this would have been better. Fresh topics = fresh humour. This wasn't just stale, it was dusty and crumbling.

This was an old episode rehash trying to add random jokes into a poorly executed story.

Find another animated show to watch.
narcalyptic_rapture4 October 2018
Southpark is dead. No more laughs to be had. In the credits they ran a hashtag in the backround that read #cancelsouthpark. I agree. Stop killing the show. End on a low note and let us enjoy the 1st 20 seasons.

My children will never see the last 5 seasons of SP.
robbrama19 October 2018
It's just gone, the fun, the durability, the simplicity, it's all gone. Being born in 1983, I grew up with South Park, man what a difference it was, everybody loved it, everybody talked about it. The episodes stood on their own, and if you watch the majority of the episodes from the first 10 or so seasons, ti is still funny, and always will be, becasue the topics are not bound to a very specific trend or time.. To understand and/or like the last 3 to 5 seasons, you have to watch every single news bulletin, every single popuair tv show/series, and every conceivable hype/meme/tweet/trend or whatever. I really can not remember when I laughed out loud watching an episode from the last 3-5 seasons. When my kids are old enough to watch South Park, I will strongly forbid them to watch any episode beyond season 10. It's like seeing an old 70's or 80's rock band, who are still performing today just to make money, it's so sad to see. I'll give this season a shot, for the same reason I keep buying the latest album by The Rolling Stones, nursing the futile hope that it will some day be as good as it once was in the glory days, while knowing deep down that it's just a pathetic attempt to keep up the revenue. That being said, the latest Rolling Stones album is pretty darn good, so there might still be hope for South Park. But as for the recent seasons I am really struggling to understand how people can give epsodes a 10 or even a 6, what is their idea of humor, how much are Matt and Trey paying them? Sad sad sad.

Terrible
dougmacdonaldburr7 October 2018
The way the Catholic church coved up abuse of children is unforgivable, they completely deserve to be criticised for having done so. That being said, none of this is funny. It is not a topic I would choose for an episode. It is extremely difficult to make child rape funny, and they did not succeed. They think they can strech out about 3 - 4 average jokes into a full episode. What bothers me the most is that it is clear that Matt & Trey have disappeared completely up their own asses. They need to be taken down for their own good. You guys made fart jokes with bad animation. That is why we loved you. You now try to make nuanced social and political commentary over high budget animation. That is just annoying. I can make up my own mind about politics, what I liked about South Park was that it was just funny. The jokes were the main focus, and the moral message was an afterthought. Think about one of their best recurring jokes, killing Kenny. There is no deep message behind that. It is just funny to see a cartoon character get killed in lots of fun and different ways. That was old South Park. In the new South Park they took that same old joke, and ruined it with some convoluted supernatural explanation, that Kenny knows he keeps dying and coming back to life, and they show all the angst he feels because no one else notices or cares. You ruined it! It was just a fun random dumb joke, it didn't need to be explained. The show is completely dead now. They have killed it. The main reason is because they take themselves so seriously. Dear Matt & Trey, you are not as smart as you think you are, and by taking everything so seriously, you have completely lost your ability to make good comedy. Please Stop! Finish South Park and move on to do something else so you don't ruin you legacy anymore. The past 10 years have been inconsistent at best, and the last 5 have been TERRIBLE! Please stop (: ()
