Liway (2019)

A biographical film written and directed by Kip Oebanda, who was born, and spent his first years, in a detention camp that housed NPA (New People's Army) rebels, during the last few years of the Marcos regime.

Kip was born in Camp Delgado to captured rebel leader Commander Liway and her captured husband, Commander Toto. The story is told from Kip's perspective.

Commander Liway was played to perfection by Glaiza de Castro. Young Kip was played by child actor Kenken Nuyad.

Riveting and touching drama. Highly recommended. The movie is currently rated a high 8.3 on IMDb. The movie picked up 3 FAP Awards for Best Actress, Screenplay, and Editing. It picked up another 3 awards at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Kenken Nuyad won a Star Award for Best Child Performer.

Stunning!

Stunning I must say. Apart from all the Martial Law inspired films, this doesn't include all the normal things that most of us heard from maybe a granny or an old man, who's a victim of rape or torture or what have you. I commend the bravery of the writer-director of this movie to showcase such heartwarming story in that era. I highly recommend this film, not because I want to influence their minds about that era but rather, to be more appreciative of what we have right now, rather than neglect it. This movie deserves all the clamour and applause they can get, and we can give.

Warning: Spoilers
A little independent film based on real life: as a boy who didn't know he lived in a rebel prison camp.

Think Life is Beautiful but with a family and a bit of folklore.

I'm a Filipina with little appreciation of Filipino movies that are usually steeped in melodrama.

This film had no obvious "Big Bad" hulking over the protagonists. There's no preachy propaganda and not much violence.

I'm as impressed with the subtlety considering it's based on the director's real life.

Don't expect Hollywood-level cinematography. You never go to a Filipino film and expect that. It's great given the resources they had to make this humble film.

I think pro and anti Marcos people can't deny the most of the things surrounding their camp actually happened. Which makes this brilliant!

I wish international viewers can understand Tagalog to fully comprehend the subtle differences with the subtitles.

One of the best movies of my life. Definitely worth giving it a watch.

FYI. I didn't mean to watch this movie... Just hang out with a friend... I was expecting to get a headache but I'm glad I went.
