The worst and most boring Super Nintendo Lord of the Rings game I've ever played
crosswalkx21 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have played this game J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: Volume One on Super Nintendo being a fan of Lord of the Rings, I've played this game.

This game starts out with Bilbo Baggins celebrating his 111 birthday, he gives the ring to Frodo, 17 years later Gandalf tells Frodo to leave the Shire and go to Rivendell.

First of all this plays like Legend of Zelda where you walk around in places, second you can only control one player at a time. Unfortunately you can control Frodo and you can't really control your allies like Sam, Merry, Pippin which is a pain in the butt to try to control, also they can die very easily which sucks big time especially against the Ringwraiths which can instantly kill you and your party, better hope your dagger or sword kills the wolf, snake, bat because they'll easily kill you.

Another thing to mention you also have to go on pointless fetch quests to find glasses, gateway gems and worst of all keys to the door, which is very time consuming especially in the dark caves. It's even worse on the Fog on the Barrow downs, when you finally reach Bree Aragon will lead your party. Make sure you have a second controller plugged in or you cannot move your character.

At the Mines of Moria the gateway gems are glitched up if you use a password which makes Elrond disappear and the Moria door open and I ended up using a password to get into the Mines of Moria, the Mines are easy to get lost in and frustrating to fight enemies and worst of all you have to find keys and spell books which is awful.

Then you enter a very hard boss fight against the Balrog which you have to carefully stab at the Balrog while avoiding his flaming torch. After you finally beat the boss you're treated to an ending where the party reaches Lothlorien and the game ends right there in the mirror of Galadriel and says you kept the ring and saved it from Sauron which didn't happen in the book.

This is the most boring most tedious level grinding snes game I've ever played, this could've been a good video game adaptation of Lord of the Rings, but this snes fails miserably, I got rid of this game cartridge as I hated this game. One thing to mention there are some alcohol references in this snes game including the word Brandywine which somehow got past the Nintendo censorship.

Although the gameplay was good for an action RPG game this is the worst adaptation ever, I'm surprised the JRR Tolkien Estate didn't stop Interplay from changing the story. I did like using Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin's dagger attacks and I liked Aragon's overpowered sword attacks and Gimli's quick axe attacks. But Legolas and Gandalf are the worst characters and Boromir doesn't even join your party.

If you want to play a good Lord of the Rings game, then play the Playstation 2 or Xbox version of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the rings, much better 3D graphics better adaptation which sadly ends on a cliffhanger. Also play The Two Towers and Return of the King by EA games, you'll have more fun with those games than this crummy snes game.

In the future I plan on doing a Lord of the Rings Trilogy romhack do over and make 3 parts for the game, in Fellowship of the Ring Volume 1, Characters like Sam and Aragorn will join you immediately, the AI for 5 characters will not wander off but will follow you. Tobacco and alcohol references will be added, I will get rid of pointless fetch quests and allow you to continue to War of the Ring or Scouring of the Shire section, have a map to find your way in the caves, I will get rid of keys to doors except for a few like with Bree and will make the game follow the book and allow you to do battle with Ringwraiths and let Gandalf automatically kill the Balrog. You will no longer need to find 6 gateway gems to Mines of Moria door but save if for Scouring of the Shire factory door instead. The Fellowship of the Ring part will follow the book more correctly, Legolas and Boromir will join right after Gandalf sacrifices himself to Balrog on the bridge but they'll leave the party right away as NPC characters.

Then War of the Ring Volume 2 will cover The Two Towers and most of Return of the King as Aragorn and Gimli will fight while Legolas will be benched for the remainder of the game as a support unit in 8 arena battles starting from Boromir's death and fight at Amon Hen, Fangorn Forest, Gap of Rohan, Helms deep, Isengard Invasion, Paths of the Dead, Pelennor Fields, Black Gates of Mordor, Also Sam and Frodo will fight 2 arena battles with Cirith Ungol and slopes of Mount doom and then end with Frodo and Gollum destroying the one ring.

Afterwards the Scouring of the Section in the final parts of Return of the King Volume 3 will start off with all 4 hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin to escort Gandalf to Tom Bombadil while finding 6 Gateway Gems and the key to the Shire and getting a note for entering the Hobbiton Shire and the final boss battle will be with Grima Wormtongue who kills Saruman before saving the Shire and having Frodo and Gandalf depart for the Gray Haven ships and Sam returning home as a Mayor with his family.

I hope one day, I will do a Lord of the Rings Trilogy SNES romhack game to replace this awful official SNES game by Interplay and make it for fun for Lord of the Rings fans.
