Football, athletics, ice skating, tennis, hockey, rowing were just some of the events he covered. Barry knew the difference between a triple lutz and a triple salchow even if the audience at home did not.

Barry did commentate in the 1994 World Cup final which finished goalless before being decided on penalties. He also went on to commentate on several FA Cup finals as well. However one final that did not go as planned and involved him turning into a news reporter was the 1985 European Cup final at Heysel where crowd trouble caused the death of 39 Juventus supporters. You can sense he still feels uncomfortable talking about it.
