Good episode
dsshaw4727 June 2019
Change isn't easy. Characters face changes in this episode. Not a lot happens, but there's mood, emotion, reckonings with unavoidables. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a righteously great episode if you are open to the message. To say more...

Resting B....Face
lyndaadams-643-5483576 January 2022
Curious.... Was Monica's Native American name "Resting B.... Face?" I have not seen that woman smile once since episode 1 !!

I loved her grandpa's take on divorce . There's been a ceremony and you're joined for eternity.

I loved Beth's advice to baby brother but very out of character for the Queen of Mean.

Weird reviews
tdmayfield4 August 2019
Most reviews seem angry the show isn't some neo nazi fantasy. Despite this show's main characters being from a rich, white, billion acre land owning family. The show is good. The acting is good. The characters are all a little evil. The lack of a moral center may be the toughest thing to deal with in this show, but that's kind of what the show is. That may be why this falls somewhat sort of most of Taylor Sheridan' S other work

You can find Columbus's journal online
lanhamrandy4 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The quote from Columbus's in this episode is accurate even though it may be several different sources the qoutes were pluck away from. Strange how people try to hide from their history. The entire passage of Monica's teaching moment seems to have been lost to some even to the point of not verifying their opinions. It is only the lazy in this digital world who cannot find the quotes from Columbus's.

"What you know of history is a dominant culture's justification for it's actions and I don't teach that. I'll teach you what happened to my people and to yours, because we're all the descendants of the subjugated, every one of us." Monica

GREAT EPISODE Y'ALL LET ANYTHING CONSUME YOU
laespinosa18 August 2021
I am so disappointed that a lot of y'all are complaining over one freaking scene when this episode was such a great on and especially revolving Rip and the shifts going on the ranch.

I was so moved with everything about this episode.

Solid if not great
85122211 April 2022
Greetings from Lithuania.

First two episodes of season 2 were pretty solid, if nothing more. First season had way better opening episodes. Yet these two were not the best in this series so far. A lot of drama and melodrama, yet its directed, written and acted well enough to keep me involved in it.

New Beginnings
bobcobb30125 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well, we had some comedy bits with John and the pool, but the highlight of the season thus far is the scenes with the ranchers just shooting the breeze, as they say. The show is committed to giving off that Montana atmosphere, it just needs a little bit stronger storyline. The setting works though.

The repulsive Beth character continues to bring down the show
larosaj-2666628 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Such a disgusting, nasty repugnant character makes almost any scene with her almost intolerable if not for her body. Best scene she was in is was when her brother punched her odious character to the floor last season. Much better episode than last weeks though Rip has also become unlikable with his lunatic rages ( having a thing for Beth doesn't help ). Good camera work ( goos stunt scene with the horses racing amongst the trees ) and fantastic production values continue to be highlights as well as Costner's always earnest acting. Best scene was at the beginning with Kayce's ex schooling ( excuse the pun ) the punk. Looking forward to more scenes where she teaches the true and unbiased history. This show will live or die on the characters and I fear the antagonistic Beth will be a continuous thorn for certain viewers.

Christopher Columbus quote untrue
slobcat-302-68011528 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am seething over the way the writers put together the words Monica read in her classroom that were supposedly from CC's journal. Go read for yourself what Columbus said and I think you too will be upset with the writers. It is despicable what they did.

Great acting but we can't even let our kids in the room. Just unnecessary cursing.
bettyboop-5926520 February 2022
Great action and drama but people can act without cursing. Our children love westerns as we live as off the grid as much as we can. We were disappointed that we can't let them watch. We love the characters and the story line. The actors are great picks for the show. The time and efforts put into the show are wonderful and we look forward to watching it every week. We would love to see more shows like this but with less cursing. We love action movies and have taught our children to hunt fish cook and live off the land. Most of all we have taught them respect for our country and our Lordand Saviour. When this came out we were hoping it would show more of the Indian nation. We love our forefathers and respect their ways. Thank you for your time.

Hollywood History
shauncarnahan4 August 2020
I was hoping this show wouldn't go there, but here we are. Monica Dutton, misquoting Columbus and letting everyone know that "making people do whatever you want, whether they want to or not is a very European mentality stemming from the political and religious structures of the renaissance. Kings and Queens with absolute power etc.". I guess they forgot to mention the various Native American tribes that conquered, stole, and took slaves, such as the Apache, Comanche, and Aztecs. Truthfully, that is the history of the world, not just the history of a few evil Europeans. Vomit inducing.

Monica's "history" is....uh, interesting.
bryanmillsfist22 December 2022
Europeans are not a people.

It apparently needs to be said that Europe is a vast and diverse region of peoples most of whom had nothing to do with the colonizing of the Americas. Including the Transatlantic African slave trade and colonization of other parts of the world the amount of European nations involved in all of this amounts to less than ten.

Greece, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia(Czech Republic Romania, Hungary, Lithuania. Estonia, Ireland, San Marino, Bulgaria, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Russia had nothing to do with overseas colonization and slavery. Yet they are lumped into the nations that did because reasons.

Western Europe is not Europe. It's a section of Europe. An Europe that also experienced colonialism, slavery, and genocide centuries prior to and including the Age of Colonialism.

Shows like Yellowstone promote bad historical ideas when they permit views such as Monica's to be expressed unchallenged. The part about "Europeans" conception of power is particularly problematic because it ignores the very real violent struggle for land in pre-Columbian Americas. The natives weren't as different from Europeans as Monica wants her class to believe.

Monica needs lessons in history.

Faux History from Hollywierd
beveson-5157230 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The quote the native professor is trying to quote is as follows:

"However, the appeared to me to be a very poor people in all respects. They go about as naked as the day they were born, even the women.... They carry no weapons, and are ignorant of them; when I showed them some swords they took them by the blade and cut themselves.... I believe they would readily become Christians; it appeared to me that they have no religion. With God's will, I will take six of them with me for Your Majesties when I leave this place."

Notice no mention of making them slaves but rather that he believes they would become Christians. In his journals this is the only mention of Natives cutting themselves with his sword.

For such a good show, I really wish the writers would refer to actual historians and not make thing up,

Monica bringing down the show
jmparker-521352 January 2022
Every show has to let ignorant activist writers use some or all of the characters as megaphones to lecture the audience. Activists only write themselves, they can't construct independent characters.

The Monica character in this episode was used to that effect in cringe-tacular fashion. It was like the wet dream of a frustrated twitter user creating fan fiction where she puts the white chud in their place and everyone claps, except this would only happen in their head and when you try to make it reality, it looks exactly as bad as it ended up being.

Not to mention it was nothing buy lies and hypocrisy and brings down the show to a level that will keep it under the greats like Breaking Bad which never succumbed to the low hanging fruit of using its story to lecture the audience rather than creating a story that had no intent to use its characters as a vehicle to "educate/lecture" the audience behind the veil of a TV show's script.

The show has its good parts, but then it has parts like this with increasing frequency which feels like a completely different show. Is this from Taylor or another director or writer thats trying to fill in their part? If so, they've done nothing but drag the show down. People don't know how to write a show anymore, they only know how to convert their bitter tweets into a script and thats what's happening these days.

Cats in the craddle

BS-du-jour: (talking about Christopher Columbus enslaving the Bahamans) "It's very European mentality, stemming from the oppressive political and religious structures of the Renaissance. (RENAISSANCE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!) Kings and priests with absolute power ruling masses who have none." The Book of Kevin The Producer. Chapter 1.

BS-du-jour 2: These "cowboys" are a huge pack of prima donnas. With all their fighting and pouting and gossipping, how the heck do they get any work done?!

BS-du-jour 3: Rip-Walker scene is THE most boring chase in the history of television. No amount of editing can save two horses trundling through the trees.

BS-du-jour 4: The brawl between Rip and... the baby brother whats-his-name. Daddy Costner REALLY thought this dancing with cows could pass as a fight? PS Rip is an INCREDIBLE crybaby.

BS-du-jour 5: The Big Bad Sister suddenly grows a heart. Ratings dropped on her character, eh?

Monica's victim cariacture on full display
danielpmcgrady12 March 2022
Plenty of anti-meritocracy and overcompensating nonsense from both female characters. One who exhibits her "I do nothing but whine but everything is bad because of other people" shtick in the classroom and the other who tries too hard and is her own worst enemy.

This show is great when it appreciates the beauty and industry on display. But the few writers this season can help but ignore the productive one's who do nothing but work hard and dedicate their lives to improving their position and the land. Of course they have to be treated with disrespect on every scene outside the farm like they are parasites.

Meanwhile the people working on backdoor government schemes, running scams via casinos and elsewhere, and working to shut down others hard work are treated as clever and witty.

I wish I could feel bad for the folks that taught US how to guerilla warfare and all about the word massacre. But fiction is fiction and low IQ people are going to believe whatever the news and Hollywood create and that's a problem. BTW, the natives knew war, weaponry and savagery pretty well. While there is a small little bit of truth in the billionaire elite, lately they are backing the left and many Hollywood types are the same as these billionaires she is warning us about. Out family bloodline has been here since the beginning and coexisted with the tribes to the extent the "blood mixed". I'm no more European than I am native American...
