The character of Mesa's bedroom was not a real room inside of a house. It was actually a film set in a basement.
In an audio commentary of the film, director Josh Cox revealed that the butterfly during the beach scene was CGI. He felt "there needed to be a little more 'umph' to the moment" to heighten the significance of the characters' actions.
