Maybe it's the hotel set, but this strange episode made me remember the enjoyment I felt watching American Horror Story: Hotel. The hotel where the main character stays reminded me of the Hotel Cortez in AHS. This show is funky & weird right off the bat, with a guy greeting his landlady at the door wearing nothing but a "wife beater" T-shirt (Pardon the term, please). Another surreal moment not long after involves an escaped zoo animal - and it's not even one of the terribly dangerous types - being gunned down by local law enforcement. The overall vibe is tense and bizarre. Rosario Dawson is magnetic, though her character isn't given much more to do than look like a bad azz in impeccable suits, trying to find out what happened to her sister. I like what I've seen so far. Looking forward to the next episode!

First Time in Saint Disgrace
Prismark1019 January 2021
The first episode goes off with a bang.
Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson) returns to her hometown of San Bonifacio after the death of her estranged sister Felicity. She who was a cop and a landlady, her car blew up.
The town seems crooked and someone in it hates cops. Allegra is the beneficiary of a large life insurance policy of her late sister. Allegra suspects something is not right as she searches for Felicity's killer.
Why did Felicity have such a large policy for her relatively modest police salary. Felicity's apartment was not the type she would live in.
This is a noirish first episode. The influences range from David Lynch, especially with the casting of the police chief and the animals escaping from the zoo. There are also hints of the Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino.
However this is also a slow burn opener. It wants to establish mood and works too hard to be off beat.
