- Dee Dee and her daughter Gypsy arrive in a new neighborhood, where Gypsy feels lonely due to medical issues, but their new neighbors can be nosy, and they both have secrets to hide.
- On June 14, 2015, neighbors called 911 on June 14, 2015, concerned about their neighbors and disturbing Facebook posts. Seven years earlier, Dee Dee Blanchard and her terminally ill daughter Gypsy are interviewed about their new home after losing everything in Hurricane Katrina. Dee Dee liquefies Gypsy's food and medication, feeding her through a tube. Dee Dee takes pills to medicate herself.
Their neighbor Lacey is an outgoing and friendly teenage girl who welcomes them to the neighborhood. She offers to do Gypsy's makeup and they become friends. After Lacey leaves, Dee Dee forces Gypsy to wash it off, making her upset. They meet Lacey's mother Mel and neighbor Shelly. Dee Dee freaks out when she sees Gypsy holding a can of coke and reminds her of her allergic reactions to sugar.
Dee Dee and Gypsy go to the mall and Mel witnesses Dee Dee shoplifting. At home, Dee Dee visits Mel and asks for butter. Mel tells her to go to the store. Left alone, Gypsy searches the internet for "best friend" and "boyfriend kiss", deleting the search history as her mother walks in. At a neighborhood cookout, Mel confronts Dee Dee about her stealing. Gypsy has a bite of frosting and Dee Dee uses her EpiPen and rushes her to the emergency room. Mel meets her outside of the hospital and Dee Dee opens up about her criminal background. Mel understands and offers a fresh start.
A flashback to the night of June 14, 2015. Police enter the Blanchard home with a warrant. They find Dee Dee's body, stabbed and lying on the bed.
Dee Dee looks at her mail and receives a check for $1,500 from a charity fund under the name Clauddine Blanchard. Gypsy overheard at the hospital that she isn't allergic to sugar. She sneaks out of bed to the kitchen and gets out a can of whipped cream. She prepared her EpiPen and eats a small amount of whipped cream. She returns to bed and her mother is sitting on the bed waiting for her.
