Lacking the inspiration for an origin story.
cruise0116 October 2019
2.5 out of 5 stars.

First, the episode is a like a prequel with Kate coming back to Gotham after her father sent her away. Sees that her former lover is kidnapped by a group of bad guys led by Alice. Meanwhile, Alice and Kate had some sort of history. Kate finds Batmans cave and decides to take over as Batwoman.

Not really much inspiration of a character overcoming her odds and being a hero. The episode is filled with some decent action and fight sequences. Nothing really new with the arrowverse. The script and direction is terribly put together. Some flash backs of Kate as a child and the accident that haunts her. Or flash back when her love interest left her for her school.

Episode 1 is not a great start. It lacks the origin and inspirational build up with the character. It has some action which is entertaining. The script is filled with cringy dialogue which makes it cheesy.

Pilot
Prismark109 October 2019
Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) has an International Lesbian Haircut Number 2. It was obvious how she was going to swing and her sexuality has been lifted from the comics.

After appearing in other DC Universe television shows, Kate Kane becomes Batwoman in the pilot.

First we get some exposition. Kate losing her mother and sister in a car accident and she saw Batman walking away.

In the present day Batman has been away for several years and coincidentally so has Kate's beloved cousin, Bruce Wayne. No one put two and two together.

Kate's father Jacob Kane has no time for the wastrel Bruce Wayne. In Batman's absence his private security firm Crow Security is trying to keep Gotham safe.

However one employee of Crow, Sophie Moore has been abducted. She was also Kate's former lover.

Kate goes to Wayne mansion and stumbles into Bruce Wayne's secret. She also finds out the immense bad luck that caused her mother and sister's death. Batman was powerless to save them.

It was a fast paced pilot. Ruby Rose is a spiky character with all her tattoos although I cared little for the opening in the iced up river. The pilot is setting up its stall, the villain here shares a link with Kate. It did look cheap with a lot of it shot inside the studio lot. The character of Luke Fox was irritating.

Not AS BAD as I expected. Honest opinion here.
sbuhrman-747987 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We all know CW can put out some cringe worthy work. Drama. Cheese. Stupid conflict dialogue that details characters original motives. That being said, imma sucker for the Arrowverse! I've given up on Supergirl because I hate the writers for that show, but I've stuck through with Arrow (thankfully), The Flash (which needs major improvement), and Legends (the far superior show of them all). When Batwoman was introduced in elseworlds, I loved her. She looked so much like the part! Arkham was awesome! I was full support of Batwoman, that is until the trailers started coming out for it.

This show suffers from poor advertising. Nobody wants to see the female version of the male superhero TRY to overcome being seen as the lesser hero because...she's a she. We went through all that process with Supergirl. And it worked. We got past it. Just do it. Be better than Batman. Lightly touch on it. ANYWAY- this is why the commercials led me, as well as many, to believe. Now, I'm not saying that this isn't a theme involved with the plot, but the show itself is not fully centered around that. In fact, it seems Kate is completely amazed at how Bruce balances both lives and she respects him. That's awesome!

Now, the show took some creative freedom and made the Wayne and Kane Family related. It also seems like Kate's dad has given up on believing that her sister is alive. Minor changes here and there, but one thing is for sure- I sure did love Alice (aka Beth)! Obviously this isn't a spoiler if you read the comics, but I thought CW would ruin this dynamic. I can assure you, they did not. Alice is the most interesting part of this whole episode and that's okay. We're going to (hopefully) root for her to be better eventually.

The relationship stuff is crucial to Kate's story and needs to be heightened. DC couldn't publish a gay marriage back in the day. That's got to resonate throughout this plot so we really feel the stakes are high. It doesn't mean we need more useless drama- it needs to have a purpose. As of right now, it could go either way. One thing is for sure, there was enough for me to return for episode 2. P.S.- it's a plus that our lead actor is willing to sustain a lot of injury while doing stunts to be this character. Let's give her some respect!

Batwoman starts... very badly.
EddyTheMartian0077 October 2019
Look I really tried to give this show a shot. I've watched nearly every DC and Marvel TV Series, and I'm caught up on all the Arrowverse shows. So far this series doesn't show anything worthwhile. The only thing I can really say positively about this so far has to be the set design and score by Blake Neely, which is always great. Everything else is mediocre or just bad. None of the characters gelled with me, they all follow their cliche character tropes. Most of the acting is wooden, to just bad. Ruby Rose isn't a strong enough actress to hold this series, and the writing isn't good enough to make me care for these characters. The entire episode structure is horrendous. The editing makes this even worse. The episode has this cliche narration for about the first half of the episode and then suddenly it disappears. It has these flashbacks throughout the episode, some which are in slow motion, except at like 2 frames a second. The placement of these are completely off too. Arrow has done both of these well. They keep a consistent timing and pacing for the flashbacks that work, and the narration from its first season was very well done. They had the perfect template with Arrow, but they just do it so haphazardly, and the entire episodes pacing suffers SEVERELY from it. I literally just watched the episode and I'm having trouble remembering what happened because all the characters are just so one note. Wrapping things up because I just don't want to write about this pilot anymore, Batwoman just does not work. There's just nothing I found to be good, except for the stuff I mentioned earlier. Kate Kane isn't an interesting, or well performed protagonist, and the writing is all cliched and just weak. Minor spoilers, but I hate how they revealed a potentially great twist at the end of this episode. Overall Batwoman's Pilot is just really bad. Can it improve in later episodes? Oh definitely, I mean anything can improve, but if this is the pilot they wrote to get people hooked, it definitely failed.

Boring
JoeMcRhee7 October 2019
I decided to give it a shot. Why not? Nobody can actually judge a show based only on a trailer. I didn't have any expectations whatsoever and honestly hoped to enjoy the episode and, to be fair, I liked some if its aspects such as the atmosphere, decorations and costumes but the visual part of this episode wasn't able to cover the weak parts, of course, such as bad writing and characters I couldn't actually care about. The final twist was too obvious and the episode was boring in general.

Pilot
NDbportmanfan7 October 2019
My early thoughts on this show are positive. Having given all the CW/DC shows their fair one season shot; I would say this pilot reminds me of Arrow for better or worst. It is mainly just a quick episode of self discovery. The problem I have, like I have with all these shows is that they quickly try to convey their characters intentions and personality so they can show references and action for the most part. This show isn't as guilty as others but those issues still show up. You know what really fails with this approach, showing that Kate is a lesbian. I felt it came across too heavy handed, like they did with Alex Danvers on Supergirl. I shouldn't leave a pilot only knowing that my main character is unapologetic and is gay. I know she will become a deeper character as the show progresses but as an episode that is supposed to hook in the audience; I think it failed at making Kate as likable/sympathetic as they could have.

Character arcs aside now, I did enjoy the story in this episode as it is set up well and lacked any cringe that I have been seeing on most of these shows. The main reason for this I believe is that this show appears to only be scheduled for 8 episodes compared to the usual 18-23. This is refreshing as the other shows have a lot of useless filler and one off villain, which is why I only watch the Flash now. The story can now focus on one villain and hopefully focus on Kate to develop her properly.

This shows is not as bad as the review score says as users voted on this way before the episode concluded. My thinking is that they saw the trailer months ago and where angered by a key line being "The suit (Batman's suit) is perfect" (Fox) "It will be, when it fits a women" (Kane). If that doesn't set off fanboys I dont know what will. I liked the line as it captures her personality perfectly. If the line bothered you; I doubt the show is for you. Otherwise this show seems to be far more grounded like Arrow/Black Lightning than the others. Will it be ruined by the crossovers, time will tell but looking at Arrow's current state I lean on yes. I hope to be wrong as this show looks to have my attention.

6.5/10

Also if the current 3.9 score sways you away just watch an episode from season 3 of Riverdale (same network) which currently sets at 7.2 and tell me which shows deserves the 3.9.

Not great, but obviously not nearly that bad
Ar_Pharazon_the_golden10 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Truth be told, the Batwoman first episode is closer to the 90s than to today: everything happens too quickly, the heroine has daddy issues, there is too much voice-over.

Is it as bad as what appears to be an army of trolls is trying to convince you? Of course it isn't:

  • No, Ruby Rose is not a terrible actress - she's decent, though the overall acting skills of the cast seem average at best.
  • Yes, Batwoman is a lesbian. No, the first episode does not throw this fact in your face all the time. It barely does so at all.
  • No, the heroine does not remind you she is a strong independent woman every ten seconds, as some "I am not, but" reviewer imagined.
  • Also, no, Kate Kane is not portrayed as some stereotypical lesbian - pretty sure that's just Ruby Rose being herself, that's why they cast her.

What could be more harshly criticised is the premise that Batman has disappeared from Gotham for 3 years now. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand so has Bruce Wayne. SUCH A MYSTERY, all Gothamites agree. Or how Kate has spent her life blaming Batman for not saving her family, only to change her mind within 10 seconds. Or that everyone could guess who Alice is. These are all pretty good reasons to be disappointed - but most reviewers don't dwell on those, only on how they feel about the messages they think the series promotes. This should tell you all you need to know about the honesty of this uncharacteristically low rating.

All these aside, this was only the first episode. There is certainly room for improvement in the series. And if it stays at the same level, it will just be mediocre - like so many others.

Not the best pilot but not the worst either
adventuresntoto9 October 2019
It's simplistic and basic. It's not awful or spectacular. There are moments that could use improvement, and there are moments that seem impressive and worth exploring.

I particularly am interested in Sophie, Catherine, and Mary's stories; I'd love to see them done right. I also wonder if Luke will be subjected to the errand tech boy trope; I hope not. It'd be nice if he were both geeky and suave (it's possible!), and not get stepped on by the white woman (it's a common trope among white feminist shows led by white women to have their white leads step on the men of color).

I hope by episode three, Rose's performance improves because in this episode she felt extremely stiff and dry. I've read some reviews by critics saying her performance is the same in episode two. This is my only problem with this show.

It's a nice, gritty and action/adventurous gothic noir superhero series. It fits in with the Arrowverse perfectly. It carries the same flaws and strengths as the Arrowverse, and it definitely feels niche. I particularly like to see Black women and Asian women in diverse roles. I hope they are all fully fleshed out and done justice.

Comparing this pilot to the others in the arrowverse, it was actually a great episode. It has kate's origins, why did she stay out of gotham for so long and also kind of what happened to batman. I found it a good episode and it definetely is worth a shot

What's with the (undeserved) hatred?
sandwiched28 November 2019
Coming from a conservative Christian POV, I, of all people, should-at least, on paper-hate this show. I really, really dislike all the uber-liberal, uber-feminist, and LGBT stuff in the Arrowverse shows. Supergirl is the worst offender by far in this regard. Show strong women, no problem-but why make the men incompetent buffoons in doing so? Why make the storylines utterly moronic? Why the horrible writing and directing?

Anyway, that's why, when I heard Batwoman would be a lesbian, I was prepared for the worst, and the terrible rating only strengthened my fears. But I decided to give it a chance (mostly because I want to be ready for the upcoming Crisis crossover). So yes, the focus on her sexual orientation in the show is definitely something I could do without. But in all honesty? The rest of the show is actually really decent so far (disclaimer: I'm only 2 episodes in). Sure, it's no The Dark Knight, but it's a lot more... grounded? realistic? ... than anything else in the Arrowverse (with the possible exception of Black Lightning). Though not perfect, most of the core characters have believable motivations and reactions to situations. I'm not repeating "That's so STUPID!" to myself every 5 minutes like I do with Supergirl (which I watch purely for the crossover events) or Legends. It's just a really decent show.

Holy cringe Batman!
nph199 October 2019
I have not seen Ruby Rose in anything except elseworlds crossover and John Wick so I really didn't realize how terrible of an actress she is. I prefer her in John Wick since she had no lines. Wow she is bad and I don't understand how she got her own show. So much talent out there and Ruby Rose was picked for the role. I can't expect someone as talentless as her to keep this series going.

While we're on the subject of acting, pretty much everyone was bad. The girl who played Alice was too much and way over the top. Everyone else was just wooden and not worthy of being remembered. I found myself bored and wishing for time to go faster so it would just be over.

If they want this show to continue they better step it up the rest of the season and give the wokeness a rest. Even woke people are getting tired of it. Just give me a good story with compelling characters and acting.

mediocre beginning
quasar-089098 October 2019
Not as woke or cringe as i expected it to be, but it was still boring and mediocre. Ruby Rose seems to have learned acting at the Brie Larson school of acting where they teach you to use one expression for every emotion. the actress playing Alice was laughably over the top, and not in a good way.

But not intentionally campy, just seems that way. Pretty terrible. Script seems like it was made up as they went along. Acting was on par from something you would expect from a adult film. Bad and cringey

Holy Reincarnation Batwoman, you found the Batcave!
Ed-Shullivan7 October 2019
Okay, I know that there are many, many naysayers already looking for this new crime fighting series to fall flat on its proverbial butt. Come on people, this is only the pilot episode and as such please give the series a worthy Batwoman chance to show what lead actress Ruby Rose can do with this new action series. Do you not want to escape for an hour and be entertained with some fiction and action and good cinematography? I am a 64 year old white heterosexual male and I have enjoyed every version of the DC Batman comics from its inception in the Detective Comics #27 in May of 1939, through to the 1940's and 1960's TV series, through to the last three decades of the Batman/Dark Knight film franchise. So why not give Ruby Rose who is a female lead with a fresh new face and new DC version of the Batwoman a chance to entertain us eh?

It is the 21st century so if the writers want to portray the series heroine Batwoman with her attractive lesbian lover policewoman Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy) than I am willing to give this series a chance to develop and find its audience. The cast of characters all play their roles well and the cinematography with the dark, damp, and cloudy Gotham City is reminiscent of the film franchise.

The only thing I would suggest that the producers consider to tone down a bit are the over-choreographed fighting scenes and to replace (at least some of the extended fight scenes) them with more dialogue and incite into the cast of characters so that we get to know the good, the bad and the ugly characters a lot better.

So Ruby Rose go for it girl and I hope you find your own crime fighting partner Robin some time real soon. I am looking forward to watching more episodes of this DC based comic series and wish the premature negative critics lay off.

Tv small scale Batman.
themerkaa8 October 2019
Just finished. It did what a pilot is supposed to. Set things up. It did that. It took the safe approach. Following the Arrow formula, borrowed from Nolan's Batman heavily. I'm fine with all that. people need to lower their expectations. I think the did great for whatever the budget is on a pilot. I think Ruby Rose will put her everything into this role. For those of you upset by the gay storyline. Where have you been? I saw herself up already doing stunts. The fight scenes in it I can see what they want to do & I can't wait. I think there is a little John Wick in there since she was in the 2nd one. There's a lot to be excited about. Give it a chance. It's a tv show. It's not a $150 million budget each episode. But yeah, giving away the coolest twist already was bad.

Well, It's What We All Expected
X18589 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So basically Batwoman's debut displayed just about all of the flaws I was expecting it to. Uninteresting supporting characters, bad cast, poorly edited, bad pacing, subpar storytelling, poorly shot, derivative character archetypes, I could go on. There was a lot of narration from the main protagonist and that really didn't work from me. There were also a lot of flashbacks that the show would awkwardly cut to which were uninteresting and equally as ineffective as the narration. Another flaw is that this pilot episode spoon feeds the audience information and treats us like we're incapable of comprehension. You know that old saying "show don't tell"? Yeah this episode didn't do that. I'm not gonna pretend any of these flaws are unique to Batwoman though these are common flaws in CW shows. This actually wasn't as bad as I had braced myself for. It sucked for sure, but it wasn't the egregious, agonizingly atrocious experience that would make me want to rip my eyeballs out that the promotional material had promised. I'll say two nice things about this episode:

1. The action scenes weren't terrible for a CW show (though I gotta say seeing a 120lb woman throw around and overpower 200+lb men was pretty hilarious, but I digress).

2. There was a nice twist at the end I certainly didn't see coming. Okay now you need some context. So when the main character, Kate, was a child a car drove straight into theirs while her mother was driving over a bridge. Batman showed, attached cables to the car to keep it from going over the bridge and falling into the river, and then instead of helping them get out of the car he just left. 🤣 I'm gonna ignore how egregiously out of character this is for Batman right now. Kate's able to get out of the car, but of course as soon as she does the cable snaps and her sister and mother fall into the river and die. Well the twist is that the main villain of this episode (and I assume the season) is actually Kate's sister. I have two big criticisms though. The reveal could've been handled so much better and it probably should have been saved for, oh I don't know, not the pilot episode.

I could say more about this episode, but I think you get the idea.

I don't get the criticism. I think in my own personal opinion only that fan boy/girls get overly protective. Forget the world gone mad with equality and overly PC that people are too worried about upsetting everyone. Forget comparisons with Gotham and Arrowverse. Every show has to find its feet and untill season 2 can this be judged properly. Good casting. Great mood setting. Cool bat suit and violence that's all you need for a bat show lol

Already trying to destroy Batman's legacy
landonkiltz8 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Can Batman seriously not stop a car accident in this show? And the fact that he's out stopping a bus in the middle of the day just seemed bizarre, this show is already trying to paint Bruce as an incompetent fool. The writing and "acting" in this show are also atrocious. Batwoman is off to a very bad start indeed.

Worst pilot in Television, period.
deusem8 October 2019
How did this insulting piece of crap end up greenlit for television?! This nonsensical abomination spits in the face of every comicbook fan. The plot is a joke, the amount of exposition flashbacks is insulting, the acting is embarrassing and the writing might even be worse than Game of Thrones season 8. Also the uber-woke gender politics falls flat on it's face.
