Kept Out Interest
Mehki_Girl24 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This wasn't particularly scary. A bit of a slow burn. However it kept our interest and thankfully this is captioned and in the original Spanish.

I don't like shows that are dubbed in English because the English is always flat and it doesn't really express emotions correctly.

Anyway, I liked the cinematography and production value. I thought it was really good. The acting was fair. I found that, mostly this just kept my interest rather than being frightening. It wasn't particularly scary, but I did want to see where it went. I also liked being able to see different parts of Mexico and something other than "bandidos" or "bad hombres" or drug cartels and other stereotypes.

My understanding is that this movie is based on folklore?

My husband and I watched this together and we both enjoyed it.

This is not a ringing endorsement, but if you want to see movies made by directors from other countries, you can add this one to your list.

By the way this is very similar to another movie where the entire population of the world gradually loses its senses.

Everything in the world is beautiful when explored...!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Director Luis Javier Henaine does a wonderful job, carrying each scene of his film with suspense. The cinematography is incredible, with atmospheric lighting that, together with the art direction, immerses us more in the theme of death...

It was filmed with an aspect ratio of 3:2, just like a newspaper photography and the camera movements are only presented in one important scene within this feature film. Cinematography also breaks the barriers of the movie screen to make us look through the eyes of the protagonist, losing the sense of sight along with him...

The sound design is also masterful, mainly by becoming monoaural, leading us to become the protagonist and another victim who is losing the hearing. The performances are wonderful and full of feeling, Harold Torres emanates the emotions of his character and transmits them to the audience. "Desaparecer por completo" is a complex horror cinematic experience, a synesthesia brought to the big screen...

Despite that rather severe misstep, Disappear Completely still manages to be an unnerving film and like Evil Eye deserves recognition as another solid tale of witchcraft in modern day Mexico. It also has something to say about the way exposure to the more sensational media outlets, tabloid newspapers, social media, etc, can desensitize people, which is unnerving in its own right...

Since you've been gone
kosmasp28 April 2024
Wait: you have been gone? No pun intended - also I don't remember the group that sang that song. But it doesn't matter because I only used that for my summary headline. No other connection in that sense. The movie is very well shot - and quite moody! The shock effects are really well chosen too.

If you like slow burning and really character driven stories ... well look no further! The movie that dares ... and dares you the viewer too. Towards the end you may think your sound system has issues ... but what you hear ... it is intended! So kudos for being brave and doing this ... it may lose the movie some viewers ... but it will on the other hand give it strong support from those who will absolutely love it ... we need movies to test limits and go beyond ... which could be seen as a pun I reckon ... intended? Well you'll be the judge ... from bystander to main figure ... what would you do? Strong images - beware.

Seen via Netflix..

Warning: Harm comes to a dog.

Around 56 minutes in(drugs pet)& the sacrifice scene begins 1:02:16 than ends 1:03:36 approximately.. If you skip ahead you don't miss out on anything pivotal, where it will make you feel confused to the story.

Now onto the remaining review: Was definitely a slow burn, watched it with subtitles.. Interesting premise of a series about consequences, although not original exactly either. One of many topics you find in television or movies, that deal with some curse.

Acting, casting, sound & cinematography was decent enough.

Feel anyone giving this very low ratings is use to in your face horror, with gore at every corner & although this has it within certain scenes it's more subtly placed.

Despite some rough scenes. Worth checking out, even if just once.. Some might not understand how it concludes, but if you think about over the last moments & his final action it does.

Lastly-Will check out other work done,by those involved in this movie.

Overrated, almost a waste of time

Warning: Spoilers
Rituals, great... but besides that, this movie does not have anything that force me to say "WOW this is absolute cinema" no, it does not have anything, it does not get you involved in the character, even the performance is not that great, I've been reading and watching reviews that are not completely honest, this is not even close of a great film is, if you do not have anything to watch, go for it, but if you have any other pending, go that way, I promise, you are not going to be loosing of anything, and I think that worst part is the ending, I wanted to know how this was going to be over, and it is not, totally a shame, no respect to the audience in my opinion.

"Desaparecer por completo" is a complex horror cinematic experience, a synesthesia brought to the big screen.
jp_9113 March 2024
"Desaparecer por completo" is one of the best Mexican horror films ever made and one of the most iconic of the current decade. The script has influences from "Ringu" and tells us a story of body horror and even folk horror, bringing pagan customs to the city, witchcraft and satanism are present, as well as the "nota roja" (red note) news so popular in Mexican newspapers take an important part in this film. Tribute is paid to the famous photographer Enrique Metinides, who in life artistically took photographs of deaths and catastrophes, from this man and with other tributes to George A. Romero, creator of the iconic zombies, the screenwriter Ricardo Aguado-Fentanes devised this story of a photographer who loses his five senses one by one after discovering that he is a victim of witchcraft, thus leading us to body horror and folk horror. Director Luis Javier Henaine does a wonderful job, carrying each scene of his film with suspense. The cinematography is incredible, with atmospheric lighting that, together with the art direction, immerses us more in the theme of death and it should be noted that it was filmed with an aspect ratio of 3:2, just like a newspaper photography and the camera movements are only presented in one important scene within this feature film. Cinematography also breaks the barriers of the movie screen to make us look through the eyes of the protagonist, losing the sense of sight along with him. Boring movie, not scary
angusyan-9232018 April 2024
Watched the movie for like an hour and not even one scary scene. Dont know why it is called the best Mexican horror movie. If it is one of the best the future is dull for this industry.

The pace is too slow and spending too much time trying to show what the main character encounter, but without anything scary enough, no climax, very flat and quickly goes downhill and becomes extremely boring.

Don't call it a horror movie if it isn't even remotely scary. Luckily it is on Netflix and not paying at the cinema, but it can't help but have to question what is Netflix's criteria to pick a horror movie.

A Haunting Journey Through Fear and Suspense
b4babar14 April 2024
"Disappear Completely" is a visually captivating film with outstanding performances and cinematography. However, as the story unfolds, viewers may find themselves longing for a deeper emotional connection, particularly towards the climax. Director Henaine adeptly portrays the protagonist's descent into darkness, yet the narrative lacks a glimmer of hope, leaving little room for redemption. Despite its adherence to contemporary horror conventions, the film's bleak conclusion enhances its credibility within the genre.

Henaine's direction, combined with effective utilization of sound and setting, heightens the protagonist's journey with subtle yet eerie intensity. Blending elements of investigative thriller and chilling horror, "Disappear Completely" is a skillfully crafted exploration of fear and suspense.

While the film delves into mysticism and tradition, its final moments offer a poignant contemplation on morality and the darker aspects of human nature. Although the script occasionally veers into unnecessary territory, the immersive portrayal of Santiago's journey, anchored by a stellar performance from Torres, keeps viewers engrossed throughout. Though not overtly frightening, "Disappear Completely" remains a compelling and suspenseful cinematic endeavour.

I wanted to give a 7/10 for the second half but the first half deserves a 9/10.
