In an early issue of Hidenori Kusaka's 1997 manga "Pokémon Adventures," based on the game by Satoshi Tajiri, the definition of a Pokémon was laid down as merely "a mysterious species not recorded in traditional biological taxonomies." A look around the Pokémon universe, however, finds no animals that have been recorded in traditional biological taxonomies, either. There are no cats and dogs in this world, only Pokémon. Some have theorized that Pokémon takes place in a distant future, a post-post-apocalyptic world where animals evolved into superpowered creatures. Others simply repeat to themselves it's just a show and fans should really just relax, understanding that Pokémon exists in a fantasy world.
In this world, 10-year-olds are offered the opportunity to leave home with a bindle with a superpowered animal in their charge, all in the hopes of garnering the honor (there is no cash prize) of becoming a Pokémon Master.

It’s hard to believe Pokemon is nearly 25 years old. It’s even harder to believe I’m older than this series. It’s stating the obvious but Pokemon has taken the world by storm. It’s been a staple part of many childhoods and the kids who grew up with that original generation may have kids of their own now. When the first movie came out over twenty years ago, it was a real event. It was in cinemas, there was an official soundtrack with some of the biggest singers of the time on it (although the songs had nothing to do with the movie itself) and they tied in the movie with the original series. To celebrate Pokemon Day, we now have a CG remake so how does Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution hold up with more modern animation?

You didn’t think The Pokémon Company was going to sit back and let Ryan Reynolds have all the fun now, did you?
Hot on the heels of Detective Pikachu and its global success story, the Japanese arm of The Pokeémon Company is about to launch Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, a CG retelling of the classic movie from 1998, in which Ash, Misty, and Brock come face-to-face with a legendary Pokémon and live to tell the tale.
The title is admittedly a bit of a mouthful, but Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution won us over on nostalgia alone, and this surprisingly musical trailer – set to the tune of Rita Ora’s “Let You Love Me” – is sure to bring back fond memories of Generation 1. Even if it threatens to spoil the film’s most gut-wrenching moment.
Here’s the official synopsis for Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, courtesy of the company...

Even from the earliest trailers, Pokémon fans and critics alike could tell that Detective Pikachu was aiming for a reputation above that of its forebears.
This particular box office hit is the first of its kind, of course, but in the realm of video game adaptations, The Pokémon Company’s first foray into live-action cinema is but the latest in a long line of such mergers. Despite several brave attempts, only disappointment and ridicule has followed the marriage of film and video game, and it’s an unenviable streak that Detective Pikachu has finally brought to an end.
Such is the brand’s global fanbase, production company Legendary clearly knew the importance of having a respect for the source material, a genuine appreciation that stretches to encompass every facet of the film. From faithful Pokémon designs to Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit’s universally inclusive script at the film’s heart,...

Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Vulpix, Togepi and the ever-present Pikachu – all icons of Pokémon Gen 1. And they’re all here in this newly-released promo image for Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.
Pitched as a CGI recreation of the ’98 classic, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is fast approaching its Japanese debut this summer – July 12th, to be precise – and what better way to drum up excitement than to release a nostalgic picture of Pikachu and friends in battle mode.
It’s just a promo image, of course, though we fully expect The Pokémon Company to piggyback off the imminent release of Detective Pikachu, which launches worldwide in May and drags the lush, neon-drenched streets of Ryme City into the realm of live-action. Chances are we’ll see a new trailer for Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution in the coming weeks, then, but for now, this sneak peek will have to do.

It seems the legend has returned.
Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution has unveiled its first footage by way of Twitter (h/t ComicBook.com), and it’s enough to trigger warm, fuzzy feelings of nostalgia.
Pitched as a CGI remake of the original classic from ’98, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is locked in for a Japanese debut this July – hence today’s foreign language trailer to coincide with the ongoing Pokémon celebrations – by which point fans will be able to take a stroll down memory lane alongside Ash, Pikachu, Misty, and Brock as they prepare for the fight of their lives.
Granted, this teaser trailer doesn’t offer an awful lot; if anything, it simply gives us an inkling of the CG graphics that will be present in Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, which may take some getting used to, given the original anime was limited to 2D back in ’98. Still,...

Today’s Pokémon Day, marking the 23rd anniversary of the Japanese release of the Pokémon Red and Green on the GameBoy. From those unassuming 8-bit beginnings, Pokémon has snowballed into a global phenomenon, becoming the second-highest selling franchise in gaming history (Mario’s the first) and spawning an enormous raft of movies, manga, card games, soft toys, theme parks and so on. The Pokémon Company’s marking today with a number of special events, but they’ve all just been rendered a footnote by Nintendo’s announcement of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield for the Switch.
Taking place in a bucolic-looking open world setting called the Galar Region (that seems to vaguely resemble Britain), the game’s set to take players through various environments including grasslands, cities, mine-shafts, snow-covered mountains and into huge Pokémon stadium tournaments, as well as introducing a number of very cute (and extremely marketable) new Pokémon.

February 27th is National Pokémon Day, which marks the date that the world was first introduced to the original 151 in the form of the Pokémon Red and Green games hitting the GameBoy in Japan, with 2019 set to be a bumper year for the franchise. Most exciting right now is Detective Pikachu, which is picking up a lot of hype after hugely enthusiastic test screenings, but we also have Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution coming out this summer and, later in the year, the expected release of a fully fledged entry in the franchise on Nintendo Switch.
And now, to get everyone’s hype trains up to full speed, The Pokémon Company’s got some very special events planned for next Wednesday. These include a marathon of the animated series to be streamed on Twitch beginning February 27th and concluding on May 6th, which will include Pokémon the Series,...

2019 is looking like a golden year for Pokémon fans. Not only are we expecting the announcement of a fully-fledged Switch entry in the RPG series very soon, but we also have the very promising looking Detective Pikachu hitting cinemas on May 10th. Those two things are hogging most of the limelight, but there’s also another big Pokémon film arriving this summer: Toho Studios’ Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.
All we’ve seen so far is a teaser trailer showing Mewtwo streaking through the night sky and a tiny glimpse at Mew, but it seems like a given that this project will be a remake of the fondly remembered Pokémon: The First Movie, which hit cinemas at the peak of the first wave of the franchise’s popularity in November 1999.
Now, courtesy of Japanese magazine CoroCoro, we’ve got a further look at some of the characters, and...

While Detective Pikachu is planned to launch Legendary Pictures’ live-action Pokémon cinematic universe, The Pokémon Company hasn’t put all its eggs in one basket. That’s because this July will see the premiere of Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, which is both a sequel to 2018’s Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us and some kind of remake of 1998’s Pokémon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back.
We’ve already seen a teaser trailer that promised that the “The Legend Was Back” and showed a CGI Mewtwo hurtling through the night sky, concluding with a shot of him squaring off against his counterpart Mew (the fabled Pokémon 151). It’s clear then that what we’re getting this July is going to follow the plot of the 1998 movie, but we’ve now got a bit more of a concrete hint of how much it’ll stick to the...
