The Insta-generation and toxic femininity go under the knife in 'Into the Dark'
imthelastboyscout28 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
'Into the Dark' goes back into character-driven thriller territory again following the metaphorical monster madness of 'Pooka'. This feels much more like a spiritual sequel to 'Flesh & Blood' in the sense that almost all of the action takes place in one house and involves a game of cat and mouse between the characters. This episode isn't as creative with its set-pieces as the aforementioned episode two, but it presents four fully realized characters butting heads.

Major props need to go to the main cast of four - Suki Waterhouse, Carly Chaikin, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Melissa Bergland - who carry the entire film on the strength of their performances. You believe them as a group of (fractured) friends reuniting and inevitably falling apart. Waterhouse in particular conveys a mix of seething anger, guilt and jealousy with a palpable intensity. Her facial reactions alone when Chaikin vomits out her smug platitudes are simply priceless. During the first act you're unsure who exactly you should be afraid of and rooting for, Chaikin or Waterhouse. That's how good they are in their roles and that is how good the script is at keeping its cards close to its chest. For a while at least.

Co-writer/director Sophia Takal demonstrates a strong grasp on visual acuity. She brings out the best in her cast and maximizes the screenplay's limited setting by exploiting the starkness and coldness of the house itself. It looks much like an empty shell, almost a show home, and I suppose that plays into the themes of the episode. After all, this is clearly a searing indictment of millennial culture, from the superficiality and mock sincerity of online 'influencers' to the bitterness that rots beneath the back-slapping girl-power platitudes. In fact, this may be the first film I have seen in a while to explicitly explore issues of toxic femininity, which dare not be examined in an age where men are the ones often in the social faux pas hot-seat. 'New Year, New You' is a direct examination of female relationships that bypasses the gender war all together. It is about female behaviors and traits that are quite often downplayed in feminist circles, such as counterfeit camaraderie, emotional manipulations, group-led bullying and personal jealousy. Sure, 'Heathers' and 'Mean Girls' tackled all of this unseemly stuff before, but they were black comedies of the highest order. This is deeply serious stuff and that is what makes the first 50 minutes of 'New Year, New You' so refreshing and compelling. It is already a pretty horrifying movie before the first punch is thrown, simply on a social interaction level. And Takal keeps us on our toes, never quite letting us know where this is going or why Waterhouse's character is acting so barmy and off-kilter.

Unfortunately, all of that intensity and mystery developed during the film's build-up is steamrollered by some woefully far-fetched plot developments. I can buy that the three women want to win a kind of karmic revenge over their narcissistic and successful frenemy. I can even swallow that they would go to the extent of conspiring a new year's invitation in order to set a trap and induce a confession of guilt out of the woman. But when the tables turn on them and said frenemy reveals her true colors, and even suckers in one of the friends into partnering up, any sense of plausibility gets thrown out of the window... in some cases literally.

The reason why 'Flesh & Blood' worked so well is that it set-up and paid off its thrills effectively without ever really straining credibility. It never contrived the behavior or actions of its lead characters for cheap suspense. Everything they do is rooted in logic and plausibility from start to finish. 'New Year, New You' gives us the best drawn characters of the series so far only to lose its grip on them entirely once the horror kicks in. It's a real shame because the first hour of episode four is possibly the best of 'Into the Dark' so far until the final 20-odd minutes go for broke and shatter the strong work up to that point. Don't get me wrong, it still makes for well staged and reasonably tense viewing, I just wish it had stuck with the more psychological approach and ditched all the running around and stabbing.

This is far better than the tonal misfire of 'The Body' and is much more cohesive than the deranged mess of 'Pooka', but falls a few steps short of the more entertaining 'Flesh & Blood'. So far, every episode has given us something different. Long may that trend continue.

I will be reviewing every episode of 'Into the Dark' as they are released. See you next time for 'Down'.

I'm lost, dazed and confused
makeitlastbyes24 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I understand the hole getting back at a bully, but the storyline of the scar and the suicide should have been shown. And I can't believe that chubby girl fell for that *&^%, she practically said "f" a dead girl I need a job.

It was good
brnewlun2 March 2021
This one is centered around new years and deals with bullying. To me, for someone who was bullied in my youth it hits right at the heart. Its a major thing going on in this world and you truly don't know what it does to the other person being bullied. Worth a watch.

raechelle-240513 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ok first off why didn't they go onto more detail about the girl that committed suicide, like back story and all that and why didn't we get to see what happened. I kinda feel like this was a waste of time like I just don't understand and what happened to the girls parents are they still alive I don't even understand how she got the scar!!!!

surprised this is blumhouse but not in a good way
shellyshutdown18 April 2022
This movie is different than most blumhouse's movies, and honestly that's what gives it its own charm. It feels like a couple of girl pals wanted to make their own little quirky horror movie. Sure it may feel cheap at times but i also feel as that also gives it its charm. The acting is good at best. What kinda annoyed me is that both danielle and alexis look similar and i kept getting them mixed up but maybe i'm just dumb.

So many holes and bad decisions
rehana-s-kazi17 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's not unusual in horror for victims to not call the cops or run upstairs and make bad decisions. There is so much missing regarding the friend who was bullied into suicide, why didn't anyone call the cops when they could, who is crazier, and why couldn't they turn the steam room off from the same control panel you see it originally turned on with inside the steam room? They are all stupid and crazy. There is no point or lessons. Ashamed to be a millineal. My IQ has lowered since watched.

A decent movie to start the year
matthewvalentin2 January 2021
Okay just like most of the reviews i too thought this movie had quite a few plot holes. It was a decent suspenseful movie but very predictable. It felt like it was barely standing on the foundation it laid out. Not much character development and while the structural integrity of the plot was there it just fell a little flat for me. Good movie to start with though

Interesting Premise Descends Into An Almost Total Mess
zkonedog5 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
For the first 40 or so minutes of "New Year, New You", I thought it had the potential to be "Into the Dark's" best episode yet. By the time it ended, however, it ended up being its worst to date.

For a basic plot summary, this episode sees a group of four young women (all former high school "besties") gather together for a New Years party. Alexis (Suki Waterhouse) hosts the gathering, and obviously holds a grudge against Danielle (Carly Chaikin), now a social media darling. Also present are Kayla (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Chloe (Melissa Bergland), who initially try to defuse the building tension. The conflict between Alexis and Danielle eventually comes to a surprisingly violent head, however, and it turns into more of a strictly survival situation for all involved.

I can easily see what director Sophia Takal is going for with "New Year, New You", as it taps into timely or universal issues like jealousy, bullying, and social media influence. The problem, sadly, is that every one of those issues is handled extremely poorly in the end:

(Spoilers)

-The scar on Alexis' face that is given so much initial screen time? Turns out not to mean (or even represent) anything. -Alexis goes from mousy wallflower to frantic revenge-doler in an instant. -There is no conflict in Danielle's character. For this whole thing to work, viewers needed to have some sense that perhaps she is being wrongly persecuted and Alexis is the true villain of the piece. This does not happen until perhaps the final scene (and even weakly/poorly at that). -The ending seems utterly unbelievable based on everything we had seen before. Alexis replaces Danielle as social media queen bee? Give me a break! Maybe that works if something like that was hinted at during the episode, but as it stands it seems just too far-fetched and counter-intuitive for all we had seen previously.

So, while "New Year, New You" uses all the right lingo and contains enough action or relatable moments to keep younger or more half-hearted audiences somewhat engaged, those looking for meaningful character development or plot resolutions need not apply. As has become the norm for "Into The Dark", an interesting concept is once again ruined (or at least severely wounded) by uneven or outright poor execution.

Fun, revenge film
coltoncoatefilm6 August 2020
For Into The Dark standards, New Year, New You is top notch. Probably the best acting performances in the series and the premise is just simplistic gold. The ending was a little lackluster on execution, but satisfactory for story. The depiction of influence culture and how those types of people talk and interact is on point and disturbingly hilarious. Highly recommend 👌

Terrifying

I have to be honest, this scared me more than most horror does. Nothing is scarier than living in an age of culty social media loving millennial psychos. I found it incredibly believable and eerily realistic.

It was a horror revenge movie with women
mochteam28 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
That setup is quite unusual in horror so this movie was somewhat of a treat. You think the movie is going to go in one direction but it switches on you and then switches again.

Wasn't exactly expecting some sort of masterpiece going into this but an enjoyable horror movie which is what this turned out to be and it was different.

Basically the plot is that a social media personality named Danielle played by Carly Chaiken was a bully to her "friends" who invited her to their new years eve party. All of the girls were tormented by Danielle so I guess they group was actually "frienemies". It turns out that Danielle was responsible for bullying one of the girls from their group into jumping out a window into the family swimming pool to commit suicide. This took place at Alexis's house played by Suki Waterhouse. If the intro is a flash back we see Alexis floating in the swimming pool with blood on her face so I'm assuming she cut herself jumping out the window trying to save Kelsey the bullied girl or somehow got pulled out the window with her but survived. That part isn't clear but according to Danielle... Kelsey gave Alexis the scar and Alexis parents fortified all the windows so no one could ever leap from them again.

That is the background to the plot. Fast forward to the party the girls see that Danielle has had much success as an internet personality and is soon going to have an actual TV show. They despise the idea of such a despicable person that bullied a girl to death having so much success so they plan to tie her up and make her confess at their party.

It backfires and turns out that Danielle is a bigger sociopath than they all thought. She isn't just a bully now but she learned to manipulate people into doing what she wants. She uses her mind tricks to manipulate her friend with the lowest self esteem into freeing her from her bondage and assisting her plot to kill the other girls. What Danielle wants is to hide her secret that she is responsible for bullying a girl into suicide as that would ruin her career and tv deal.

The move from there flips between serious and silly or perhaps it's just the acting that's over the top at times? In the end Alexis gets her chance at fame and stardom she always wanted... I guess.

Overall this movie was an okay watch. The story was unique enough and it was entertaining. It left more questions than answers. I don't get why the girls just couldn't have uploaded a video about Danielle and detailed the crime of the girl being bullied to death. That would have worked just as well to destroy her.

I also don't get why Alexis was so interested in being an internet personality and needed to bump Danielle out the way to do this? She could have just uploaded videos doing the same thing and been fine on her own.

I try not to take horror movies like this so seriously otherwise you won't be able to enjoy them. It was a solid 6/10 for being different.

Lame
liseyatthedisco10 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched 3 of the "Into The Dark" series and this is by far the weakest. Predictable plot, no scares, absolutely nothing memorable. They also murdered the lesbian woman of color first, followed by her girlfriend who was literally just a plot device. Gross. Definitely skip this one.

Didn't live up to the hipe or did it?
Film_Noob_David4 January 2019
Everything about it I was on board for, all female cast, female director, female driven horror, but in the end was a boring 30 some odd minutes of watching females do what females do before something happend. But even then the pay off was still not worth the time spent watching a very boring phyclological horror or attempt at one. The twist at the end was very lame to say the least and over all very typical and not what I expected. So much lost potential.

Got some plot holes, but I really enjoyed it
wesperkins28 March 2024
Okay. So there are some pacing issues and A complete lack of back story that makes it hard to figure out what's going on. There are a couple of plot holes that can be picked apart. If you can get past that, then you will enjoy this. The episode held me in the entire time, And there's enough Unpredictable stuff, going on to keep you guessing. This isn't the deepest episode, but on some levels it actually is, with the commentary on social media. This one took a little bit to get into, But once you get into it, I didn't want to turn it off. Overall, Just an enjoyable episode to watch. Not all of into the darkness episodes are for me, so This was a pleasant surprise.

The story is really incoherent and illogical
ahotbeefcake26 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first half and the second half of the film feel like they were written by different screenwriters. The first half focused a lot on Alexis's scar on her face, it seems they do it for the later plot, but the second half of the film has nothing to do with her scar. In the first half, Alexis still struggled to face her scar and face the camera, but at the end of the film, she suddenly replaced Danielle as a Youtuber on the Internet, and didn't have any camera shy and didn't care about her scar at all. In the middle of the film, it was suddenly abruptly stated that Danielle was a bad girl who loved bullying others, but I thought these girls were all playing together before. If they were being bullied how did they be part of the small group, so suddenly make Danielle an enemy is too far-fetched. Kimberly, who has always being mentioned that killed herself in the story, which didn't give more details about what happened before, so it is difficult to decide who we should root for, and decide who the real bad guy is. This story is really incoherent and illogical, this film could be much better.

[7.5] Reunion for reminiscence
cjonesas7 June 2021
Interesting watch. Everything artificial in this episode. The acting, the atmosphere, the flow and the ending! Nobody ... after being pushed through ... into ... Despite all that, you just concentrate on them to deliver you a diluted syrup of bloody reunion.

The only thing scary is how slow it is
jax-2029 December 2018
I had never seen Suki Waterhouse in anything until this. ... and this was not a very good introduction to her. She's pretty wooden and maddening to watch.

Of course, she wasn't helped by the molasses-slow pacing of the script. Kirby Howell-Baptiste was her usual luminescent self, however. Unfortunately, she's not enough of a reason to sit through this mess.

Good concept, not executed very well
snowfire-337602 January 2023
The concept is interesting and it starts off okay. My biggest issue in the begining was the camerawork. It pans over or zooms in and lingers on something for a while, as if trying to be ominous but it feels awkward more than eerie. Some of the acting (not all) seemed a bit off but I thought it was just because the characters were supposed to be awkward or we just weren't supposed to know their motives or exact emotions quite yet. I eventually realized that a lot of the acting just wasn't where it needed to be to really sell the character. Despite this, I was still interested in the story overall.

I started to lose interest later on when some of the decisions didn't make any sense, and pretty much completely lost interest when the "action" parts and dialogue with them seemed so incredibly strange and clunky that my brain couldn't even force itself to be invested in it. The final scene was just... odd. And then it zooms on on pool water without showing anything else like it's trying again to be creepy and just failing at it. Also, I expected that at the end we would get answers to some things that had been hinted at or discussed, but we don't, and it's very disappointing.

Overall, good concept, just needed to be thought out a little better.

The only thing worse than the acting was the directing! Horrible! I never write reviews but I needed to for this one. I can't even decide if the story even had a chance because of how poorly made it was.

Just Enjoy It!
tbridges-5155713 April 2020
Anything can be picked apart. No creation is without flaws. Relax and let the movie happen. It's a fun ride and a grand setup for the ending! Is it totally realistic? Nope! Enjoy it! I found it very well cast and never took itself too seriously.

I normally don't take the time to write reviews, but this felt needed. It was a complete waste of time. The acting reminded me of an 80's low budget b-rated horror movie. Complete trash!

Good topic, not so great delivery
nito_a-147-64850110 February 2019
I think it didn't deliver very well making it a little slow and confusing, specially the back story about the suicide, but still; it has a very good comment on social media and how our generation defines success. One thing is the public persona and a completely different thing is what goes on in real life.

Really enjoiyed the ending although it was king of predictable, and you HAVE to appreciate the whole "manifesting and affirmations" irony.

New Year, New You
bobcobb30114 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well, they managed to completely flip the script on us halfway through and turn the movie into something else. While I did laugh at some of the goofy horror film tropes, overall the script and acting was a mess.

This series is good at parodying social media like they did in the final scene, but not much at everything else.
