Season One Review

I'm a "Rick and Morty" fan but given that Hulu is not available in the UK I've had to wait quite a while for the first season of "Solar Opposites" to make it across here. But arrive it has, on Disney Plus as part of the "Star" channel - whilst I don't think it quite matches its illustrious stable mate, it definitely fills the void.

Four aliens, Korvo (Justin Roiland), Terry (Thomas Middleditch), Yumulack (Sean Giambrone) and Jesse (Mary Mack) escape from their doomed planet looking for a new one to terraform. Unfortunately, they land on the already heavily populated Earth. They attempt to integrate with the native population, whilst fixing their ship and raising a Pupa (Sagan McMahan/Liam Cunningham) whose power and motivations are not clear.

Justin Roiland is creator/executive producer on this with Mike McMahan, who is also the creative force behind the "Star Trek Lower Decks" series. The show employs similar techniques to "Rick and Morty" especially when it comes making the vocal performances feel semi-improvised. It leans a little more into references for humour, whilst largely avoiding the parodies that the other show does on occasion. There is less mythology to the main characters, so far anyway, but this is replaced by an ongoing B-Story, involving Yumulack shrinking any humans that annoy him and adding them to "The Wall" - a feudal community that is established behind a clear plastic barrier like a hamster cage. Mostly this story has only the odd scene per episode, but the penultimate one switches things around and makes the wall the main story.

In fairness, it took a couple of episodes for me to settle into "Solar Opposites", at the start it felt like a "R&M" clone that someone else had done, but after it settled in I enjoyed the rest of the run and will crack straight on with season two, now that is also available on Disney Star.
