- The Promise: A Docuseries on Childhood Cancer presents an unparalleled, 360° view at childhood cancer. Each episode will dive head first into its correlating topic providing a raw look at what the childhood cancer community really looks like.
- Episode 1: We hear from children, parents, siblings, and doctors about the diagnoses, treatment protocols, and side effects that children experience. The number of treatments a child receives is often staggering. Episode 2: Relapse is the recurrence of a disease while remission is a decrease or disappearance of signs and symptoms of a disease. Children facing cancer hope to hear that they are in remission but often will experience side effects of treatments well into adulthood. Unfortunately, many children relapse or are diagnosed with a secondary cancer. Episode 2 features those stories as well as highlights the notion of palliative care in childhood cancer treatment. Episode 3: Many of the drugs that children with cancer receive today are not only older than they are but are also meant for adults. In Episode 3, we dive into the logistics and limitations surrounding childhood cancer research. We hear from a PhD student at the DIPG Lab in Washington, DC, a mother who has made it her mission to research Osteosarcoma and a father who created a bio-sciences research company with the goal of creating new drugs for childhood cancer. Episode 4: Episode 4 details several pieces of legislation looking to benefit varying aspects of childhood cancer. It describes the labor intensive battle by advocates and families to get even a day of recognition passed. We touch upon #Moonshot4Kids, the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, and advocacy for psycho-social standards of care. Episode 5: The series culminates with our episode on awareness and tells the story about 'The Promise' that was the inspiration behind this film. We learn from several childhood cancer advocates on how WE too can be an advocate for childhood cancer.—Kristi Gatto, Director
