Solid tale of survival n humanity. This one deserves an Oscar for best foreign film.
Fella_shibby5 October 2023
I saw this few days back. To be honest I wasn't even aware that such a movie existed. It was only when this was sent as an official entry from India n it was all ov the news, that I came to kno of its existence. Maybe the movie wasn't advertised or marketed well.

It is such an awesome movie that I find it a crime that this movie wasn't known to me.

The movie is about the 2018 Kerala floods n how people helped total strangers, showcasing that humanity exist specially in the southern states of India otherwise the cow belt n other regions in India are notorious for Christians, Muslims n Dalits persecutions.

The background song is very touching n the background music is mesmerizing.

The character Anoop will stay with u for a long time. So will the fisherman family n Nixon.

THE REAL KERALA STORY.
AjHuntt20 May 2023
In this age of hatred, even people in the film industry are succumbing to political inclinations and producing movies that favor certain political parties while tarnishing the reputation of the entire state of Kerala. However even in this landscape, there are also cinematic gems emerging that shed light on the indomitable spirit and heroic deeds of Keralites during the catastrophic floods of 2018.

This movie provides a profound and heartfelt "proud to be a Malayalee" moment. Every member of the cast impeccably portrayed their respective roles, delivering stellar performances that resonated with authenticity and emotional depth. From the lead actors to the supporting cast, each individual skillfully brought their characters to life, captivating the audience with their nuanced portrayals and virtuous delivery. Their collective commitment and dedication to their roles resulted in a truly memorable cinematic experience that will undoubtedly leave audiences feeling a deep sense of pride for being part of the vibrant Malayalee community.

Not enough praise can be showered on this wonderful piece of cinema.
dhunjiwadia22 June 2023
Today, when cinema is being used to promote hate and divisiveness, this movie comes as a breath of fresh air. This is the Real Kerala Story where Everyone is a Winner.

Not enough praise can be showered on this wonderful piece of cinema.

Based on the real life devastating floods in Kerala, the movie takes the viewer on a journey through the tough times faced and bravery of those who rose to the occassion to help their fellow beings. There's nothing preachy in the film. Everything is subtle.

The performers seem real and relatable. There are no 6-pack ab heroes. No running around trees. Every character has a role to play and they all come together in a production of cinematic brilliance.

The screenplay is very well crafted. Creating a multi-dimensional story that has complex characters, along with engaging dialogue that involves the viewer right from the beginning.

The cinematography is breath-taking, the production design and art direction create an authentic world. The editing maintains the pace of the movie and the background music is top-notch. Should be among director Jude Anthony Joseph's finest work.

It's available in a few languages on SONY PIX. But my preference was watching it with Malayalam audio and English subtitles.

The Real Kerala Story indeed
kawsarnaharmim21 June 2023
'2018' is a great movie. This is the best so far. Tovino Thomas, I am a big fan, man. Respect. The whole team did a tremendous job. Literally everyone is a hero. This is 'The Real Kerala Story' indeed. Each and every character plays a vital role from their own perspective. And that's why the movie is amazing. It is based on true events and I literally terrified on that time how people will survive. But the thing is the southern part of India is well organized and obviously beautiful. They also proved it during lockdown also. 'The Kerala model' for the quarantine was also appreciated worldwide. Kerala is beautiful. I would love to visit oneday.

2018, showcases the resilience of Kerala during the devastating floods of 2018, movie takes us on a journey through the tough times of those who suffered from the floods and the bravery of those who rose to the occasion to help their fellow beings. The actors' performances in the movie are top-notch . Their portrayal of the emotions and struggles of those who went through the floods is heart-wrenching and deeply moving.

The direction of the movie is exceptional. The way the director has intertwined the stories of various people who were affected by the floods is brilliant. He has done an outstanding job in capturing the essence of Kerala and the resilience of its people.

The editing of the movie is seamless. The transitions between the various stories are smooth and keep the audience engaged throughout.. The music reflects the emotions of the various characters perfectly and adds to the overall impact of the movie.

Watching this movie made me appreciate the strength and courage of the people of Kerala, who stood together during the devastating floods of 2018. This movie is a tribute to their bravery, and I would highly recommend watching it to anyone looking to witness the power of human kindness and resilience.

2018 was recreated. Craft at its best .raised the bar of mollywood
nairabh7 May 2023
Watched malayalam movie 2018 It's a movie based on the floods that happened in kerala in 2018.

Fantastic movie especially the making is too good. VFX, editing and direction was brilliant.

Breathtaking shots Jude Anthony the director take a bow this will be one of your career best creation..simply mind blowing.

The movie shows how a romantized rain can destroy life's. The makers successfully created the flood and it was neatly crafted.

No lags in the story and will keep you on toes throughout.

Tovino Thomas plays character (Anoop) and it will be there in the viewers heart for long. Brilliant and realistic acting by him.

Once again he shines as a romantic hero. (I am sure he will grab awards for this)

The film does an excellent job of capturing the emotional journey of the characters and the resilience of the people affected by the disaster through its realistic and sensitive depiction of the flood's aftermath. Notable performances by actors like , Lal, Kunjacko Boban, Asif Ali, Narein, and others make the film all the more compelling. Big shout out for actor sudheesh superb acting by him.

Huge star cast movie but importance was given to everyone and they all did a brilliant job in fulfilling it.

You need to experience this in theatres .hollywood style movie making and has surely raised the bar of mollywood movies.

A must watch movie not to be missed . Surely give you goosebumps and will make you cry at the end..

Well this is a Real Kerala story that everyone needs to watch.

Epic movie
kalaivanicuteheart19 June 2023
'Every calamity is news until it hits us'. This movie is about the 2018 flood and based on true incidents. Amazing performance by Tovino Thomas and rest of the stellar cast. Malayalam movies surprise me every time with something new. This movie would seamlessly take you inside it and make you experience the flood. Thanks to the team for making this as a movie. It left me in tears at the end because it hits differently! My heart goes out to everyone who died in the flood and to everyone who survived it. This film is of international standards and reminds me of 2012! This team made the impossible happen. Don't miss this experience! It's not an yet another movie but a epic one!

Great Movie
sbalan-216409 May 2023
Relatable movie at the core. Good story telling and the way screenplay was moving around indeed commendable. Every other actor did their job extremely well. Several moment were heart touch and emotionally draining.

Unlike similarly released calamity bound movies this movie goes through a story and eventually showing the issue in a simple yet the intense way.

There was no expectations from Jude since his last movie Om Shanti oshana was not upto the mark some sort of cliche third rate so called romantic movie but 2018 is totally different and huge accolades for such a fantastic creation. Appreciate the efforts made and indeed this will be historical movie.

Pros - 2018 is a disaster - survival drama covers 2018 Kerala floods . Main positive of the movie was it's characters and casts , there were huge set of casts and each of them character arc's were well written , their emotion towards the situation and motive were very well potrayed . First half completely belongs to the story build up & character establishment and real story takes off in the second half . Jude Anthany's making style was good . Technical wise , cinematography was good and editing was odd in few places . Cast did a great job .

Cons - Screenplay could've been better in second half , eventhough the movie had intriguing factor it majorly missed the thrilling factor . Cliched and overdramatic in few places .

Overall , except for the missing thrill part , the movie was emotionally strong and intriguing . Expect a good emotional survival drama .

A technically solid survival thriller with predictable emotional arcs! [+72%]
arungeorge137 May 2023
2018 lacks the layers and nuances of a survival thriller like Virus but writer-director Jude Anthany Joseph keeps delivering emotional beat after emotional beat in the second half, and fortunately for us, they work. There's a certain level of technical finesse too, which helps making the devastating flood scenes look and feel authentic. Nobin Paul goes for a lighter score in the first half when the film is establishing various characters and their backdrops, but goes all out once the floodgates of Idukki dam are opened. The score is instrumental in building the tension and the goosebump moments, and it does what it sets out to do. The screenplay by Jude and Akhil P Dharmajan focus more on the ground-level efforts put in by the fisherfolk, and rightfully so.

Little light is shed on government machinery and media efforts, and it's barely anything when you compare it with the rest of the film. Most of the key characters' arcs are predictable to a tee, especially Tovino's and Asif's, yet they still prove to be the film's strongpoints. The angle with Vineeth Sreenivasan and Kalaiyarasan could've had more depth, while Aparna Balamurali's portion is almost forgotten in the second half. Lal and Narain also get decent screenspace and their characters are pivotal to the rescue events. It is difficult to sum up the 2018 floods in Kerala into a 2h 30m film, and as a craftsman, Jude shows that he can handle subjects of scale and get his cast to work wonders with whatever they're handed. The champions here include the departments of art, soundscape, and cinematography.

The dialogues are a reflection of the social media posts of the times, and they sound a bit forced, especially when a character has to give a rousing speech or get ultra-emotional. That aside, I'll give credit where it's due to Jude and his entire team for coming up with a memorable tribute to the people of Kerala who stood united during a really difficult time and reminding the rest of India that this is the REAL KERALA STORY. And yes, 2018 is clearly a theatre watch. No arguments whatsoever.

P. S - Can't wait to see the behind-the-scenes clips!

Fails at story building around the 2018 floods in Kerala
bhas42 June 2023
First Malayalam movie in Theatre (big fan of Malayalam movies, after watching a lot of them on OTT), few good things.. 1. Scenes around flooding / rains have been shot well 2. Couple of characters (blind person & specially abled kid) have done well (even with their limited screen time)

Several things the director could have done a better job: 1. Script tries to tell a story using too many characters, should have limited to couple of families & build a story 2. Unwanted Tamilian / Kerala hate thing 3. 2hr 30m is too long for this movie, and could have been done in 90mins with a story around the flooding day.

The real Keral story
kattackakamjino8 May 2023
Brilliant direction from Jude Antony Joseph. Never seen visuals in Malayalam cinema. Brilliant acting from all the actors Tovino,Kunjako boban ,Asif Ali,Lal,Vineeth sreenivasan. Tovino's episode will be in every one's heart for a very long time. Kudos to the music department well. Never ever felt VFX was used in the movie. Keralites can show this to outsiders with pride that this is our movie. Sudeesh episode was really shocking everyone will be astonished for a very long time. Wondering how Jude Antony created these water scenes. Really felt like he shot the movie during flood time. All the keralites should watch this movie.

Incredible human story.
chand-suhas7 May 2023
Based on the 2018 Kerala floods, the film narrates an incredible story involving rescue of the civilians who were unaware of the severity of the situation rendering even the government helpless. The timely intervention from the local fishermen help the incredible rescue mission. 2018 - Everyone is a hero and that is what the film succeeds in portraying.

The film is entirely driven through human emotions and for a disaster survival film, it has quite a generic screenplay with noticeable foreshadowing throughout the first half. What works is how honest the characters are and how real the terrible scenario is. With too many characters, couple of them and their sub plots take a hit, making one wonder they could've been dealt better.

Since the focus of the second half is entirely on the floods and the rescue mission, the director succeeds in elevating the second half perfectly while the bunch of good actors ranging from Tovino Thomas to Indrans deliver superbly. The effective 2nd half is what makes this movie a must watch. I was not too impressed by the visuals in the trailer but the final outcome is chilling enough.

An experience that grips your soul
zabilnoor19 May 2023
It is a theatre experience that will not leave you disappointed. Worth every penny for any movie lover! This is one Malayalam movie, where every character and their roles reflects their unwavering dedication to deliver their best. Every scene contributes to that brilliant culmination which will leave you smiling and heartbroken at the same time. Truly, the cast and the crew has succeeded in elevating the viewers to that rare dimension of emotional state. Perhaps the biggest testimony to this grand creation is the respectable silence among the viewers that pervaded through cinema hall in the end.

heart touching
yasinnodecr8 June 2023
I had seen a reel on Instagram in which a girl was crying in a cinema hall watching a movie, after seeing that I watched the movie. That girl cried in the cinema hall and I at my home. This movie has been told about the real humanity, this movie will be in the list of never forgotten movies in all the movies I have seen till date.

This is such a movie, watching which my time was well spent, I can say this openly, some things about humanity are not learned by people in years, that thing has been explained well in this movie in 2 hours 30 minutes, respect them To all the people who contributed to the making of this movie,

And the most respect to those people who have openly helped people in real life during the floods of 2018.

Love from heart.

Overrated yet well-made
ron_j_reviews26 May 2023
2018 (2023):

In spite of the fanfare this sleeper hit has been receiving, I personally believe that 2018 is overrated despite feeling very high budget in terms of the cinematography and practical effects.

The first segment before the title card is played on screen promises a film that is incredibly expansive in scope and story, but the rest of the first half indulges in a few of the characters' daily lives. The issue with this half is that it is drawn out, sending you into boredom, which the effect is amplified after watching the stellar beginning.

The second half picks up as we not only see the devastating effects of the floods, but also simple yet effective character development for a handful of characters. However, this comes at the expense of other characters being underdeveloped or even almost completely forgotten.

The practical effects and cinematography were nothing short of incredible and they work together in harmony to really amplify the emotions in the latter half.

Overall, 2018 is an emotional thriller that effectively utilises and develops a handful of the characters present, at the expense of the utilisation of other characters. The film rises in emotion and really hones into its thriller aspects in the second half, yet it was too little substance too late into the film. The film would have been of higher standard with a shorter first half, and a smaller number of characters, to ensure that they are all developed effectively and receive adequate screen time.

This is KERALA STORY!!
adnanuchiha11 June 2023
I watched it late, but I'm speechless, due to the reminder of the nightmare we malayalees went through, I don't usually review over any movies, but this one if I didn't, I can't call myself a keralian!! To the director, producer, actors and all the crew members, I can't praise or appreciate enough for creating such a wonderful movie based on an original event!! Hats off guys!!.. Tbh I'm on tears till now writing this review, we lost we realized and we changed our pov!! We lost around 500 lives, we realized how lucky we are to be born in an understandind and humanitarian society we live on,I want to thank every real life heroes especially our heroes in the shadows, the fishermen, who provided and resqued all the needed with the godly act of yours!! I am actually proud to be a malayali!! Now coming to the movie part, my words aren't enough, cos I know! And I've been there close enough to experience what was it like, first of all a huge appreciation to the director and the crew members for having the daring and mesmerizing thought and mind to create such a movie!!. Tbh nobody is the judge over the fact that, what goes on in a society or on others life, we can't judge anyone, we are not worth it to do so, coz we people only know, (by people I mean all over the world!!,) superficialy by medias and stuff what's Goin on all over the world, but to feel it we need to experience it! That's what I have to say, things that we went through on these events only we know, and there are many things that's going on all over the world! No one can appreciate and live the pain and suffering that everyone goes through!! As of now, we know we live in a world of chaos and hayem! But this incident taught us whatever the chaos or difference may we live through, may it be cast, religion, nation, race, politics or whatever, at the end of the day we all are humans made of flesh and bones equivocally!! Certain incidents remind us that we are mere humans!! This movie, we all people should watch all over the world that I can assure, cos we all should know, fee, and understand what it is like to be in a situation that makes us realize what's more important! I have no more words! Only thing that I can covey through this since it's my first review over a movie, is that try to realize who we are actually, nothing matters more that life, whether it may be human or any other! When a situation or a calamity arises we all stick together, face it and overcome it, and the fact is we will no matter what, to the new director though he's a familiar face to us malayalis as a good actor Now he proved that he's a great and innovative director as well! I am not restricting my praise only towards him, but I praise and appreciate all the crew members and actors like tovino, asif Ali, Lal sir, Indrans sir, sudheesh sir, ranji panicked sir, Narain, siddique sir, aparna balamurali, shantha Kumari Amma, shivada Nair, and every other other members who are a part of it! And in this movie, one of the most appreciable thing is that there's also a role for the Tamil actor, Kalaiyarasan, who did his part gorgeously!! No more words from my part!! Anyway a fantastic movie and a must watch for not only mallus and Indians, rather for everyone all over the world!!

Loved and enjoyed it thoroughly!

True story but
firoz-aboobaker24 May 2023
Watched the movie in the theater, after hearing great reviews from critic as well as public. Expected a lot, but wasn't satisfied as a movie lover but was emotional watching it as a Malayali. The 2018 flood was very much close to all of our heart. Every malayali tried to do their bit to help people, so yes, everyone is a hero.

The movie could have been lot better ( the script) because what happened in real life was more emotional and heroic in many ways. That affect I didn't see in the movie. Asif Ali's character was very cringe. It was kind of Dirctor Vinayan kind of emotional stabbing. The rest of them were all well written. The youth that helped through social media wasn't told very clearly. It was just a voice message Siddique listing. Not a bad movie , but an average flick.

Overrated and cringey
sourabhshukla21 June 2023
The movie's cliches and contrivances compunded by it's cringey background score and overly dramatic sequences makes this a laborious watch.

Malayalam cinema industry has produced some of the finest works but this was pathetic in it's craft. It does have a few sequences which do shine but that's about it.

In the quest to promote this as the 'Real Kerala Story', a lot of folks just suspended logic and went overboard in denouncing a bollywood movie released at the same time and promoting this trash.

From start to end the movie is predictable and has too many cardboard characters with maximum attention reserved only for the most famous actor in the movie.

Please avoid this and watch a documentary or news piece on this event for the real Kerala Flood story of 2018. That's even more heart touching.

Best Malayalam content after Drishyam!
manideepc-6377512 June 2023
After facing the devastating #flood in #Assam last year, I can relate the pain through this masterpiece #2018everyoneisahero. Undoubtedly, one of the best Malayalam content after #Drishyam. What a flick! @ttovino #JudeAnthanyJoseph @tanviram_ Kudos to the entire team. @ikalaiarasan. This movie is an experience of pain, efforts, livelihoods, amenities, struggle, emotions, bonding, relation, calamities, and glory. Cinematography is excellent beyond words! South movies are taking a big leap in the spectrum of entertainment. It proves yet again, good content doesn't need powerhouse promotion, redundant songs, and bunches of celebrity kids. At the end, all you need is a story to sell. Bollywood will take ages to act on such unreal content. Thank you #sonyliv for streaming this masterpiece!

Everyone is a HERO
Where to start ? In simple words, this movie was everything we went through shown in a 150-minute masterpiece. The casting of every person had a purpose in the movie, then there is the setting where they created a flood atmosphere and showed it like we were standing there and watching it. The sound capturing of rain and all, the human emotions shown, the character development given to basically every character in the movie, the pacing of the movie, the connection between all characters, and the list goes on.

Tovi's character is just the sort of character that makes movies worth watching again, asif, chakochan, vineeth, lal, narean, sudeesh, aparna and many others did their role exceptionally well. This movie's setting gives every character their own development and leads the story further, Moreover, it makes the 150 minutes run time feel not so long at all.

Every movie comes with negatives here there are a few too, but it is acceptable and contributes to the movie one way or the other, but still some scenes where unnecessary, and some necessary scenes are left for our imagination on what could have happened there. But the movie's ending makes us forget all of that.

The music and Bgm was lit and were made to make the audience get involved more to the scene and it worked out great, half way through the movie felt like dark ( series ) as lot of characters was introduced in a short span and was hard to keep up who all are related to who when the pace of the movie started to increase. The people stranded on boat scene single handedly was enough to set us up for what to expect from 2018, all together well done the entire team and director behind the film.

Watch this movie at the theater with a huge crowd mahn that's some experience.
