Not Bad; Family Friendly
jrnabors29 May 2020
It seems that in the post-HBO Deadwood era producers and directors feel like they have to fill a Western film with profanity and gratuitous nudity to give it realistic grit. This film rejects that mentality. Now admittedly the production value and authenticity is not exactly stellar--in one of the first scenes Shooter Green is using a Henry Big Boy rifle, not introduced until 2003, but it passes for an Old West rifle--but it's not bad. The storyline was fairly easy to follow even though it switched back and forth from the Old West to the 1920's. The acting was fine. It has, as other reviewers have said, a typical Hallmark type production, but sometimes those films can knock it out of the park (the original Love Comes Softly movie, e.g.) This one might not rise to that level, but it was a fun movie that kept my attention and was not overly lengthy. It could have benefited by better costume design, as all the clothes were new, clean, and pressed at all times, which is not realistic for the Old West or even a farm in the 1920's. The shootout scenes also looked fairly fake, as the actors/stuntmen are seen holding guns as if they are as light as plastic toys, and there is no discernible recoil when shots are fired, which means they probably weren't real guns firing blanks but nonfiring props, and the shots were edited in digitally and a gunshot audio effect added.

Good movie for families

67 yrs. old here. The movie is slightly reminiscent of the the goodness and morals of the 50's TV western. Production value, settings, and the transition from the old west to 1929 in the movie were somewhat weak. The hero, Shooter Greene, and the young boy were on the front porch of the farmhouse clarifying the truth of the book the boy was reading in one scene. I noticed there was vinyl ship lap siding on the house! there was no vinyl siding in 1929.

Oddly enjoyable
morgan-659-31284221 December 2021
This budget film might not be realistic in many ways and is certainly ultra clean - the mother occasionally looked like she was ready to walk down the catwalk - but was strangely enjoyable. It was much like being told a story which was told on the hoof but was, nevertheless, captivating and engaging. Certainly recommended.

Fun in the west

In a similar vein to Second Hand Lions , this is a touching story of young lad on an adventure. Always liked Adam Baldwins work . Filming locations are wonderful , filming itself is well done. Shooter ,Tommy and Josie unknown to me prior , but they enjoyed their performances. Jill Wagner very good. Nice relaxing western. Very touching. Loved it !

5 Mile Cave

I love westerns! This is a good movie and I understand the updates, but for me it would have been more realistic if it fit appearances of that time, such as, the eyebrows are overly manicured, highlighted hair, the fellar's hair at his important day would have been combed and some goo added to it to keep it flat instead of the new wave tasseled look.

Fun movie if you're into family westerns
PaulDVernon14 June 2019
Some beautiful photography and great landscapes. Shooter Green- both young and old - looks good and is very convincing. I love a good western. But this was not Indiana Jones in the Wild West as the music might suggest. A good family western worthy of the 'Hallmark" channel where everything and everyone was spotlessly clean. And if you love sloppy endings then this is for you.

need more movies like this!
karlemaye29 June 2019
I have no children in my home and I am not an old lady but I am sick of the dirt in most of entertainment today. From the profanity to the push of the liberal agenda - it makes me ignore most movies and television shows. This is why INSP is such a great network. This movie is not only entertaining but keeps it clean and political free. This world needs more of this!

Not Great, not Terrible
Jima-36-58549120 June 2021
Simple, obvious plot and reveal. Now I need to add words, so I will say that the ending doesn't solve the mortgage situation; the money must be returned to the owners. But hopefully there is a reward.

How do you know so much?

Warning: Spoilers
This is a family western geared at a nine-year-old male who might have lived 50 years ago. A drifter stays at a farm in Kentucky in 1929 and tells the young boy about the legend of Shooter Green in a flashback. While there is nothing wrong with the film, as an adult I discovered it to be light on entertainment.

"I'm not the man the world thinks I am."
classicsoncall24 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Here's what a 1940's era B movie Western looks like when made in the present day. The story takes place in 1929, but through the use of various flashbacks, takes the viewer on a trip to the Arizona frontier of the late 1880's. Utilizing familiar names from history like Virgil Earp (Tom Proctor) and Sheriff Bean (Danny Vinson), presumably based on Judge Roy Bean, we witness the story of pulp fiction hero Shooter Green (Jeremy Sumpter), except for the fact that the real Shooter Green shows up in the guise of drifter Sam Barnes (Adam Baldwin), who we ultimately learn has an definite motive when he appears at the farm of Susan Tilwicky (Jill Wagner) and son Tommy (Jet Jurgensmeyer). Even with a stagecoach robbery and handful of shoot 'em ups, this is family friendly movie fare, as the story comes full circle to share the story of how Shooter Green foiled a stagecoach robbery of two hundred thousand dollars in gold, only to have it lost to history following a chase that cost Shooter a bullet to the shoulder and a bout of amnesia. If it winds up all too formulaic, it's still a good flick for younger viewers enchanted with tales of the Old West and the heroes that tamed it. Saddle up with a youngster and ride 'em cowboy!

I struggle to understand how anyone with a modicum of intelligence can find this remotely realistic or entertaining. Unbelievably bad. If you're over the age of 7, don't waste your time.

Really?
racefreakmel23 February 2021
Vinyl siding in 1929? One would think that a production of a period piece would pay better attention to details like that. There's 90 minutes I'll never get back.

American Gun Culture + Childcare
roberrific-2114524 May 2022
Guns are cool. Guns. Guns. Guns. I especially like it when the kid takes the rifles and fires three shots at the retreating car where his hero is in the backseat and could have as easily been killed. Indeed , a far more likely outcome than him shooting the tire - who writes this sludge? Anyway it's just great the way the kid uses the gun. Gun gun gun We need more movies about kids picking up guns and using them recklessly and being celebrated afterwards for their heroism. That's a good movie.

Great Family Film
melissajanhays1 March 2020
For those of us wanting to watch movies that are clean, wholesome, not controversial and no language/cursing... this fits the bill. We have no children at home and we have morals and values that allows us to watch up to a PG13 but even then, we have to sometimes turn them off.

Hallmark has crossed the line on a few moral issues and that leave us with UPTV... always excited to find another option for comfortable, inspirational films.

Please keep them coming!

God Bless You.

Not bad
mapanari8 June 2019
Was a pretty decent movie, until the end. Why do so many directors in PervertWood (i.e. Hollywood) have such a hard time ending a movie? The ending made no sense. If you have a couple of hours to waste, watch this. The director should never be allowed to do another movie.

An Honest Review
generationofswine12 September 2020
It kind of reminded me of being a kid again. Cowboys, a mystery, some of the things the child in me would have loved. And then, on top of it, was a narration that reminded me of childhood classics like The Boy Who Could Fly, Radio Flyer, Sandlot, The Princess Bride, all the movies that kids from the 80s knew and loved.

And the best part is that it's a pure light film. It's not dark, it's not cynical, it doesn't force political morality designed to paint it's target audience as evil or shame the things they like... it's just a light fun film.

The good guys are good. The bad guys are bad. Mystery, action, suspense. The characters are developed, they aren't stereotyped created to force an agenda.

It's just a refreshingly simple and ultimately well acted and thoroughly entertaining film. And one that is family friendly. It's hard to find in 2020 and I am glad I took the time to watch it, for a little while it made me forget about the chaos of this year.

For simpler minds
dbh85030 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Simple plot. Ok for simple-minded fare. Dialogue needs work - words and phrases they didn't use then. Costumes are terrible - all clean and new - except for a couple of bad guys, of course. Perfectly white, straight teeth, makeup on the women. Beautifully trimmed beards and eyebrows. Everyone is VERY clean. Roads and town streets perfectly flat.

People of that time had clothing that was very worn and stained and their normal daily wear looked pretty rough. They were dirty most of the time and very scraggly looking. Their hair was not perfectly quaffed and beards were not trimmed. Only the girls of ill repute wore makeup and their hair was very simply bound so it would not get in their way while they worked. Some terrible riding - arms flapping. Ridiculous. A guy leaves his horse in the desert when he climbs into a moving stagecoach??? If I were 9, I would like it. As an adult, it's awful. Check out "Open Range." Much better AND family-friendly.

Really good movie and a little different!
billcrook10 June 2019
I purchased this on Amazon because I'm fan of the 3 main actors (Baldwin, Sumpter & Wagner) I figured I would like it despite it's low rating and I was not disappointed. Let me just say that the story is unique, not your typical western. It's rather slowly paced but steady, not tons of action but enough and it's a clean movie the whole family can watch. I liked seeing Jill Wagner in a role different from her Hallmark Channel movies. Highly recommended!

Family doesn't have to mean simple or weak.
cjbarrett30 August 2020
Think about Princess Bride. Very similar in structure but the writing, direction and acting were worlds better. Love Adam Baldwin, an always reliable, likable actor. He feels oddly miscast in this. Although everything about this film is a fantasy, that's not a reason to short change the film making. Still I don't understand why a "family film" has to come in like a poorly executed, low quality HALLMARK CHANNEL film. Again, really poor writing and direction in particular. Very disappointing.
