Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) works in a similar manner to hydro-power: In times of low demand, water is pumped from a lower to an upper pond, so that potential can be utilized when demand is increased. Instead of water, ambient air is compressed and stored under pressure in an underground cavern. When electricity is required, the pressurized air is heated and expanded in an expansion turbine driving a generator for power production.
