Warning: Spoilers
It was hard to watch last season of Gomorrah without Ciro. It was my favorite character. But, here there are the good news, Ciro is alive and doing again what he does better, being a broker. The movie itself is far inferior compared with Gomorrah but on the other hand music, acting and scenography are amazing as usual. So, if you're a fan of the series, you're going to enjoy this. The end is fantastic. I can't wait for Gomorrah's new season with Ciro again!

An interesting prequel to the final of the Gomorrah series
jleholeho20 March 2020
Maybe not a top-notch gradation from the beginning as we would like to see but fairly exceptional ending. Marco is as convincing as in the series.

Good but unnecessary

Warning: Spoilers
Few drama series are so strong that they can afford to kill of their leading characters without losing their essence; but 'The Wire' managed it, and so did Italian drama series 'Gomorra', which dispatched Ciro di Marzo at the end of series three. 'L'Immortale' is a spin-off movie, centred on Ciro; needless to say, there's a major but necessary plot twist right at the film's start, with the action soon displaced to Latvia, away from Naples where a Ciro-free series four unfolded. The mood is familliar but the pace is slower than in 'Gomorra', which already had a story where Ciro was working in eastern Europe which was covered in just one episode. It also seems to be that actor Marco d'Amore, so riveting under the direction of others, seems slighly mono-dimensionsal now he's directing himself. And the full complexity of the Neapolitan mafia politics in the original is echoed here only in a simplified form. I still enjoyed the movie, but in some senses Ciro had to die: his narrative arc was already complete. I haven't seen series five yet; should he reappear in Naples, it will be interesting to see what kind of place they find for him in the story.

Good but not great like the TV series
horrorules19 March 2020
This spin off about Ciro is a good movie but not close at TV series, this movie is boring in some scenes, last part of the movie is cool expecially final sequence. My rating is 7/10. A good movie but not a masterpiece like TV show.

Gomorrah - Season 5, part 1
mikelivesey-9331422 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As an avid Gomorrah fan this is a must watch film for any self respecting Gomorrah fan. After the end of season 4 it's been a long time because of the Co-Vid19 pandemic and subsequent delay of the season 5. This however makes up for that delay in part and also answers alot of questions surrounding the past of Ciro. This film is mainly about the upbringing of Ciro from childhood to the adult he has become. How he was brought up explains so much about his familial love towards those he cherishes and is perfectly counter balanced with the ruthlessness of a mob boss. To truly understand this film and it's meaning you simply have to take the journey and watch the entire series. I promise you you will not be disappointed. This is Italian TV / Film making at it's raw and ethereal best. The company Cattelya who started this off have been bought out by ITV and when I heard this my heart sank at the thoughts the quality of the writing and production might suffer but up to now this has not happened and I can only hope the ITV executives will leave the Cattelya production team to keep doing their thing. I can't understand why the ratings are not higher for this film. Truly under rated. If you like this then try Suburra the film by the same team and then the series. Amazing stuff.

Cyrus falls into the trap of authorship
RobertoLeoni7 December 2019
(translation from Italian) I've been working in film industry for many years and I have witnessed the repetition in global cinema, but especially in Italian cinema of the phenomenon of cloning or "series". Whenever there is a film of some success that receives public approval, immediately inspires further films to be made that would like to be twins of the original. The more the first film, the progenitor, was successful precisely because of its originality, of its particular rhythm, of its invention, of its suggestive interpretation, the more a series of epigones is born, increasingly smaller, squalid and repetitive. I have witnessed this trend since the beginning of my career: from the "musicarelli", films whose heart is a song then the "pepla" that were mythological films trying to emulate the big-budget Hollywood historical epics, that really had an illustrious precedent. In fact, we Italians in the early twentieth century had made a very important "kolossal" film: Cabiria by Giovanni Pastrone from 1914 that taught everyone how to make a "kolossal". But soon after, also because of the scarcity of means, we folded over the peplum films in the 50s and 60s, first copying the American epics and then with a series of ours rich in subgenres even mixing contemporary heroes to ancient ones as Maciste against Samson or Hercules against, now I say to joke, Mandrake... Immediately afterwards there were westerns, the famous spaghetti westerns with the grandeur of Sergio Leone followed by a series of first interesting "copies" and then by completely absurd titles like this one: "Sartana's here... Trade your pistol for a coffin" Then, the "poliziotteschi", then the political films, the "cinema of navel gazing", then the films about the mafia, then "La piovra" and then the films based on Gomorrah. Gomorrah is an important Matteo Garrone's film very successful based on the novel by Roberto Saviano, origin of the television series Gomorrah which has had great success. From this great success Marco D'Amore, together with Cattleya, decided to elaborate something absolutely new, which he defines "a bridge between the 4th series and the 5th future series, in the middle there is a film that will serve to bring television viewers to the cinema and the cinema spectators to watch the TV series ". So an important experiment realized without paying attention to expenses with intelligence and with a charming glamor, which is that of Gomorrah. I'm sorry, though, that Marco D'Amore - an actor and also an author that we have already appreciated both as a director, both as character in the television series, for how he gave his character Cyrus a boost - this time he falls into the trap of authorship. That is, it hurts itself because the very important feature of the Cyrus character that was having an extraordinary fixity as result of his moral desolation and also of his absolute and iron will that gave him this determination and this look, deep but at the same time it was as if he didn't see anyone, so surely one of the keys to his success, precisely because of this original and suggestive interpretation, here in the film he abuses it. There are even times when he is catatonic, moments in which this capacity, this mask of his becomes too rigid, as if it really imprisoned him and forced him to repeat himself in such a way that his feelings no longer show. Only this still image remains that in the long run of the film tires. Unfortunately it happens very often that an actor-director lose control of himself for a moment, perhaps because he no longer has the capacity to watch himself with criticism and almost with malice and unfortunately this is detrimental to the film. Also because the layout of the film, beyond the scenographic idea of transferring it to Northern Europe, therefore in some unusual and suggestive landscapes, actually it lacks strength because in this union of mafia, camorra and gomorra it is as if borders and outlines were lost, the epic nature of the characters is lost. Not surprisingly, a comparison came to mind with another very successful Italian film, played by Pierfrancesco Favino, The Traitor directed by Bellocchio, in which the epic character is preserved and it is possible to give a dimension of strength which is not entrusted solely to the actor, but also to a context with a concrete reality which gives the desperate sense of violence. Here, however, they are rightly called "swindlers" the Neapolitan bandits who are in Northern Europe, because they really have a swindlers look without offending to the famous movie "The Swindlers" directed by Francesco Rosi in 1959 written by Rosi himself and by Suso Cecchi D'Amico. I have to give a special praise to Giuseppe Aiello who plays the little Ciro as a child and also to Martina Attanasio who has the freshness of a desperate "little star" in the neighborhood. Both of these figures, as well as other contour figures, are carefully, forcefully and with poetry made and I particularly appreciate it because I also had a childhood in a difficult neighborhood like Trastevere in the postwar...

Just amazing. It's incredible how italian cinema is getting better day by day, and this movie is the proof! Ciro is a 3D character, not the classic mobster because we can feel his emotion and that's awesome

It literally hurts me to give a low but honest rating
BruceWayne36 August 2021
When chiro meets up with the guy in the forest they really focus on him smoking that cigarette. Then when they look at each other and say - let's go Kinda cheesy

I liked it

Didn't love it

Left a lot on the table to explain

Everyone loves chiro, he definitely should of stayed around in the show

This movie was like the el Camino special after breaking bad, it was ok, not great.

Simple entertainment
agjino10 January 2022
Gomorra, the series this movie is based on, was a brilliant insight to the poverty and crime in Naples masterfully written by journalist Roberto Saviano. The first 2 seasons were based on the book by Saviano and provide all the necessary closure for the tragic story of Ciro Di Marzio. The rest of the TV show was written to bank of the popularity of the first 2 seasons.

The movie is a further attempt to bank on the very beloved character of Ciro. There is no character development in this movie. There are surprises, but they're very in-your-face. There's very little of reality in this film. It's sad to see the brilliance of Saviano turn into a mediocre thriller. That said, I did enjoy the movie. But it so much less than what it could have been. In fact, the whole Gomorra universe after Season 2 is simple feel-good entertainment.

Can it get any better than this?
gunkshotbabyyeaight5 December 2019
Italian cinema is just astonishing. The movie left me speechless because of how thrilling and compelling it is. Props to everyone who worked hard to make this movie the best it can get. I'm sure the Season 5 of Gomorra will also be as great as the rest of the seasons including this movie. Marco is extremely talented and I'm we're going to see a lot more of his work in the future. Solid 10/10.

Gomorrah time!
MarcoParzivalRocha7 November 2020
As he sinks into the waters of Naples, Ciro sees his past resurfacing in the darkness.

It's a spin-off of the successful Italian series 'Gomorrah', about the mafia, so in order to really appreciate all the details and information you should at least know the main plot of the story (a better known example is 'El Camino' and the relation with 'Breaking Bad').

As a stand alone film, the story has a good base, with the typical subjects of a crime/mafia thriller, with betrayals and plot twists, for example. The cinematography is interesting, with good parallels between flashbacks and scenes in the present time, and a good character development, filling the gaps left by the previous seasons of the tv show.

The modern Italian cinema genre has its ups and downs nowadays, with 'L'immortale' being a film cinema for the masses, but well thought out and well structured, not a messy one.

Big disappointment
erez_eltawil27 May 2020
As a huge Gomorra fan, I was expecting something else. The movie was so slow, I found myself playing with my phone. Besides that, the plot was incredibly unbelievable and it felt like it was all thrown together just to have an excuse to get Ciro back into the show for the millionth time.

Fun to watch Ciro again, poor ending
Hughmanity19 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this supplementary "Ciro Show" and glad we got it. The childhood back story was interesting to fill in those blanks on Ciro's character, but it was a bit slow/boring at times and the kid really didn't look like Ciro or have his mannerisms so it was tough to think of him as young Ciro at times.

The Ciro-as-adult story was very compelling and felt like an episode of Gomorrah. The only problem was the ending which felt like an unearned plot twist that wasn't set up properly by anything that happened in the back story or up to that point. Bruno never had anything but a good relationship with kid and adult Ciro and it didn't seem like Ciro ever did anything to break that. So we're supposed to believe that Bruno is just suddenly shallow and petty, betraying Ciro for seemingly no real reason, and he's been acting and playing nice this entire time? It rang false with me.

The other scene that rang false was when their coke processing hanger gets invaded by the Latvians and Ciro's crew just stand there with apparently zero weapons at hand and say "hey what are you doing" and then take a beating with basically no resistance. This is a drug warehouse! Like they wouldn't have at least a couple of guns around, or any security watching outside? How do the hanger doors just open up for the Latvians, did they have the garage door opener? It was all a bit ridiculous.

Overall I enjoyed the movie and was glad to have it but it had some significant flaws, so I couldn't rate it higher than 7.

Solid and true to the show
calicut11014 August 2021
I will not give away any spoilers but I had no idea what I was about to watch. It was such a good sequel from season 3 and also prequel from his childhood. The same type of plot, music, complex betrayals exist in this movie similar to the show. If you enjoyed the show this will no doubt feel like a nice, long episode with some great twists and turns as usual.

A prequel to the finale of Gomorra
maxpl-5890814 April 2023
Sure, I don't believe it is anywhere near the calibre of the series. But it is definitely and enjoyable movie, perhaps a little long and drawn out with a simplistic plot but it provides a great Prologue to season 5 of Gomorra. Recommended to fans of the series, however if I watched as a standalone film without knowledge of the tv show I would probably not think it's any good. It is directed beautifully and has a great orchestra take on the original soundtrack. The acting is superb and the flashback scenes provide a look into Ciros childhood and the story of how he came about to his nick name 'The Immortal'. A masterpiece? No. A movie worth your time? Yes, enjoy.

Recent HBO Max release
jpmist30 July 2021
My first chance at viewing this via HBO Max and am quite horrified that the English overdubs are so bad. I gave up in horror after 20 minutes with the awful translations and unintelligible Latvian characters. Then the soundtrack while often beautifully done is often intrusive and completely off in tone compared to what we're watching.

UPDATE: So I did find an Italian language version to watch that unfortunately had the exact same translation only as subtitles but somehow I could deal with that better than hearing badly accented english not in sync with their lips. I did get thru the movie and so for that at least moved my rating up to 6 stars from 4.

I ended up being very impressed with Marco D'Amore who played Ciro and also directed himself. But perhaps if another director was looking over his shoulder he might have persuaded Marco that more than 3 scenes where Ciro does nothing but glower dramatically and smoke a cigarette is far too many . . .

Slow and boring
lruella16 October 2020
I watched this movie only because I am a Gomorra fan and I am an Italian living in Riga, where the movie was shot.

I can just agree with everyone else: story is super slow, lacks pace and flashbacks of ciro as a child are a waste of time.

Disappointed

A good directorial debut tainted by a half baked script.
bell110105 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have been following Gomorrah for quite a while, no doubts Ciro (and Patrizia) are my favorite characters. The first minute are probably, and sadly, the best part of the film. A movie that is split in half between origin of the Immortale and current times, filled with annoyingly frequent flashbacks telling a far more interesting story.

At the end we are left with a Ciro that once again doesn't deal with the fact he's finds himself alive once more. He just goes on the dull next adventure.

If the movie told only with the story of the young Immortale, maybe revealing only at the end he's still alive (instead of telling us in the last trailer and various interviews-Seriously Marco???-) I probably would have loved the film a lot more.

Having said that, at least I have a reason to wait for the 5th season.

This one looks like a final chapter in the series, but also leave it open in the final part. If you didn't watch the "Gomorra" series you can't really fully appreciate this movie.

Very well done and vastly underrated.

Wow what a movie - che film!!!
lallo-25 December 2019
What a fantastic movie I've just seen at the cinema. Just out, this movie is so great and full of actions. The story doesn't let you to breathe and the 2 hours fly away as were 5 minutes. Finally another great great Italian movie.

Do not mess with Italians. The movie is well done, actors act very well, the plot is full of flash backs and the final wow is so great.

Ottimi attori. Colpi di scena e storia ben scritta.

Meglio non fare casino con gli Italiani.
