A Fun Tilly Adventure
ben-843-15282813 October 2018
This episode is a short, fun experience. What at first seems like a cliche alien attack, turns into something unexpected, and far less sinister. The story is not critical to any Star Trek plot, but it does showcase the personality of Tilly, the featured character.

Tilly is fun, but some things don't make sense

Warning: Spoilers
With only 13 minutes to tell the story, this Short Trek keeps things flowing and doesn't get into a complicated plot. But some of the story details make no sense.

*** SPOILERS***

The alien woman claims that her species evolved on the planet at the same time the planet was formed. This is an absolutely ridiculous conceit that doesn't hold up to the slightest bit of scrutiny. She constantly referred to the planet as her twin sister, which just sounds weird.

Then there's the bit where Tilly is ready to transport her back to her planet. But since she didn't tell anyone the queen was aboard, how do they get to her homeworld?

Finally, when does this story take place chronologically? Is it before the Klingon war? It can't be after the war ends, because S2 picks up literally seconds from where S1 left off.

The episode itself was just...okay, but it doesn't really fit anywhere, so I'm not sure what the point is.

Tilly is always charming!

Warning: Spoilers
I had to go back to re-watch S1 of Short Treks, after the disaster of S2, to make sure I wasn't way off base about the brilliance of Discovery. But no, this episode has more merit than all of S2 put together. Tilly's costume shows that the costume crew is capable of making a well-fitting uniform for bigger busted crew members and the two actresses are both talented as always. The introduction of the new character serves as a bit of a preview when she makes an appearance during the normal season.

There are some plot holes: you have to be close to a planet to use the transporter, if you're born the same time as your planet then you would be it's sole resident, not queen of a populace, and the new character goes from being a prehistoric animal-like figure on all fours to a calm, eloquent two-legged in a heartbeat - Tarzan transformed in 60 seconds or less. Wait what?

A lot of Tilly

I'm not a fan of the character Tilly, so having to spend 15 minutes with her was tough. She goes from making normal decisions that anyone would make to decisions that no one would make like a rollercoaster of bad writing one would expect from a stream-of-consciousness approach that lacks any edits. Honestly, I could feel each major idea the writers wanted to make like I was forced over a hurdle of bullet points from an outline of the episode.

Would I watch this episode again? Never.

Do I regret watching it? I guess not? I suppose I'm just glad that it was only 15 minutes long. Honestly, though, this could have easily been a side plot during an episode where two other characters learn to work together or the crew discovers some artifact floating in space or anything to give me some time away from Tilly. Like I started with, this was just too much Tilly for too long.
