Cathrin Blake has decided, in addition to her psychiatric practice, to work again as a criminal psychologist for the Galway police after ten years. She has no idea that this will lead to a serious conflict of conscience when she looks after the young, suicidal Nathan Smith, a so-called Traveler who moves through Ireland with his clan without a permanent residence. Nathan loves Maggie Dunne, a young, ambitious woman, also a Tinker like him, who is secretly studying psychology. Both dream of a different, better future. But then Maggie is found dead, murdered and made up like a doll. Nathan, who was seen arguing with Maggie, is suspected of murder. But Cathrin recognizes in the disturbing production the sexual fantasies of another of her patients - Jack Sweeney. But is Jack really capable of such brutal ritual murder? Has the line between fantasy and crime been crossed here? Cathrin finds herself in an irresolvable contradiction between her responsibility for her patient and solving a gruesome murder.
