A World war II grenade exploding in the fire place kills Barbara Voss, who was about to be consigned to a home for Alzheimer patients as her husband Hendrick Voss, who runs a modern wood mill, can't keep up caring for her at home. His devoted housekeeper Jule Steinmetz may have aspired 'liberating' Hendrick Voss, who also has a secret affair. His daughter Barbara might soon be disinherited, as she disapproves of his old-fashioned stakeholder care in favor of 'business numbers'. Her simpleton brother Ansgar also needs constant parental supervision and resented his mother being removed.
