Veterans galore, but a bit off the mark
david-rector-850925 October 2020
What's not to love about a movie with a cast list that includes Oscar nominees James Cromwell, Jacki Weaver; Acting royalty of Jack Thompson, and iconic performers like Dennis Waterman and Roy Billing? Plenty to love, but not much to like. The dialogue; whilst salty and humorous at times, is laughing at old people and the infirm and those with dementia. It depicts nursing homes as prisons and the security as just thugs; whilst the nurses and doctors seem absent or incompetent.

If you leave your brain in another room, this is an enjoyable romp, but make no mistake - it is not art, nor is it a well executed buddy movie, romance or any of the other tropes it seems to be wanting to be. But how many more films will we get to see the great Jack Thompson; the very dignified James Cromwell and the eternally cute Jacki Weaver? Actually i think this is one of Weaver's better performances of late. This and 'Poms' where she gets to either play big and blowsy or quite sweet and poignant as she does here. But the dialogue lets down the group of esteemed actors who barely keep a straight face delivering it! Call me sentimental, but when veteran actors such as these pop up and get a chance to strut their stuff, it is worth checking out. But high art, it ain't. But you will get a few chuckles and maybe reflect on ageing and the elderly.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but a good time waster.
Davey1926 October 2020
I took my Grandmother to this film and she had a good chuckle with it. There are a few issues with it. Some pacing problems and logic regarding how nursing homes actually operate come to mind. However it was tender enough and the performances were solid. Jack Thompson actually shined and deserves more comedy roles. It might not be anything memorable (no pun intended) but it is a good way to waste a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.

Fun movie
darrenlockwood9 December 2020
This is a movie that will particularly appeal to Australians given its cast and setting location. The story is somewhat shallow but it's a fun movie. I think too many times people go to a movie and expect every movie to be a blockbuster. This is certainly not but it's a great date night flick for middle-aged couples glimpse ahead to what life may be like when your mind and body starts to fail. The movie generally is respectful of the ageing population but at the same time highlights the comical moments as well.

This is really fun. I find it hilarious and it's not too far fetched, making it quite believable. It is enjoyable to watch.

Not a straight comedy.
liannebchristian31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There were sad bits and there were funny bits too, but this is not a straight comedy. As someone who works in the aged care sector I was interested in what was being done by the staff in the home. The use of chemical restraints such as what the manager did to Bronson is something that the Royal Commission into Aged Care has highlighted as a serious issue. In the movie this form of restraint was used not for the benefit of the resident but for purposes of convenience for the home and in this movie, for vengeance. I found that disturbing, as well as the scene where they lit a fire to trigger an alarm so they could escape. After the Quakers Hill nursing home fire that really killed 14 people I would have thought that the makers of the movie would have thought that irresponsible and insensitive, but no, they filmed it anyway. I was also bemused by the use of what looked like pub bouncers as security staff. None of the homes run by the organisation I work for have any security staff at all so that seems to me to be way too strong and more a movie trope than reality, at least in government funded aged care. Apart from these scenes it was mostly quite good. Jackie Weaver did well with acting as someone in the early stages of dementia. There's been a couple of good movies released in recent years about elderly women with dementia, such as Elizabeth is Missing, and Still Alice.

A waste of talent
dboakes24 July 2020
Such a shame this film was awful. So many good actors but the plot is so stupid and ridiculous. This could of been wonderful. A missed opportunity.

Best Aussie Comedy for 2020
waltermwilliams21 October 2020
Finally the best Aussie Comedy for 2020 has arrived! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll sigh! How good is this cast for starters? Academy Award nominees James Cromwell and Jacki Weaver head a strong cast in this hilarious and feisty film about four grumpy old Vietnam Vets who unite to re-enact the Great Escape. Toss into the mix Dennis Waterman...the man who wrote the theme tune & sung the theme tune. (except not on this occasion, but it is a banger soundtrack). Jack Thompson and Roy Billing also star in this 95 minute feature film, plus Max Cullen as the scene stealing Hank (even when he's dead) along with Shane (Full Monty) Jacobson. Together the old diggers are "The Chain Breakers" an elite squad in their day who escaped a torturous POW Camp only to end their lives in a new prison, "The Hogan Hills Retirement Home for Returned Veterans". A nice nod to one of the few Aussies missing from this ensemble, Paul Hogan. I loved the way this movie sensitively handles Dementia, PTSD, and many other mental & physical illnesses, yet lets you roar with laughter or wipe the salt from your eyes in the next moment. This is their last mission and you will cheer them on every inch of their journey. NEVER TOO LATE is a delightful Aussie comedy about love, family, friendship and determination. If you love the smell of mothballs in the morning this could be your next date night.

No nursing home.
jebradley09216 March 2021
I don't believe that the writers have ever been in a care facility or even read how one is run. Because of this, watching it is painful. No reality what so ever.

If nothing else - watch it for the pleasure of seeing our good actors
alex-27820 February 2021
The story is simple and problematic, but it really doesn't matter , it is just good fun with a little message of how age creeps up on you. If nothing else - watch it for the pleasure of seeing our great actors mucking around.

Great fun.

I only gave it a 5, because...
Australian12 August 2020
I wanted to like the movie, Australian actors who had been tops at one stage, but... It just didn't have the comedy. Being manipulated, chased by a Vietnamese in Australia didn't appeal to me! One actor needs to disappear from TV and movies and that is Jacky Weaver! Can't stand her, never did! Yet she seems to snake her way into many shows!

Beyond Stupid
drednm29 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The plot of this mess veers from lame comedy to idiotic drama trying for pathos. The basic plot is that a bunch of veterans from the Vietnam era are locked up in an Australian institution where they are medicated against their will, locked into their rooms, and roughed up by staff. The head of the institution is the daughter of a guard who was blamed for their escape from a war prison camp 50 years earlier. Oh please!

So the plot has the vindictive doctor mishandling senior citizens who only want to live out their days without being prisoners. Why they are prisoners is anyone's guess. The old "it's for your own good" is thrown in but it makes no sense. Apparently Australia has no laws that prevent the torture of patients in veterans' hospitals.

Into this mess comes the 50-year-old "love Story" between the American (James Cromwell) and the Australian woman (Jacki Weaver) who were parted all those decades ago. Now she has dementia, but he's determined to complete his romance by marrying her. But she's in a different institution, hence the several attempts to break out.

On the few occasions when the guys actually get out, they are chased and caught by the doctor and her goons. Apparently they have nothing else to do and don't bother calling the cops. Even when the cops are called to help round them up, this never gets any press attention. Their whole story takes place in a vacuum.

Each of the vets has a mission. Cromwell wants to marry Weaver. The wheel-chair bound vet (Roy Billing) wants a reunion with his estranged son. The dementia vet (Jack Thompson) wants to be remembered for his glory days as a soccer star. The dying vet (Dennis Waterman) wants to literally sail off into the sunset. Blah, blah, blah.

The actors try hard but this is a mess thanks to the writers and the director. The screaming and trite music blasts from the 60s and 70s doesn't help any.

it had so much opportunities...
ops-5253525 July 2020
But they where all left in the frontal lobe or alzheimers dementia. the first 5 minutes give hope for a comedy buster, but it strands due to the way producers and directors chose to tell the story and lay the plot. its for sure gives you some kicks in the laugh gutter but its just spontanious and fades quikly, makes you feeling the prison feeling its to be in a retirement/nursing home, not just there but everywhere in the world.

its a film with a load of cookoes nest, but the love story plotted into the story makes it dull and just hoping a bomb would litteraly blast in the medicine room or whatever. the grumpy old man that has been working in the geriatrics and nursing homes for nearly 30 years do acknowledge the lazy and passifying days the elders have to adjust to, its not a film with high vibes, just a smile here and there. its a no recommend

I loved it. I took my 29 year old daughter. We laughed and we cried. One of the best Australian movies that I have seen. Would have liked my husband to see it too. The highlight for me was Max Cullen. Superb performance.

Missed Opportunity.
baldy_man31 July 2020
There are some great names in this movie, and sadly it ends there. This could have been a real gem but it missed a decent storyline. It passed an hour and half on a lazy day.

Anyone who has had aging family will appreciate this story
kinofan130 August 2020
I saw James Cromwell was in this, so I had to check it out. Maybe it's a movie for baby boomers, who have, or had, parents who no longer had much to look forward to in life.

I enjoyed the comedy, and the feeble attempts at escape. I've known people who tried to escape nursing homes, and it is painstakingly bittersweet. Everyone has a history, and bringing "the old gang" back together with dozens of challenges, trust and mistrust, lies and truths - it really warmed my heart. And I laughed. A lot. Good dialogue. Nothing wasted.

High recommend, and if you think you don't get it because you're too young, remember, everyone will become elderly at some point. There are some lessons to learn!

Appealing Cast Gets B Script
DKosty12314 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The cast here is talented. There is some cute humor though some of the laughs come cheap from stereo type characters being given lines which make things seem stretched. While I liked the film, it was a trite too predictable.

For example, when a gun shows up, it is so easy to predict that it would soon be fired by accident and that happened in less than a minute after the gun appears, I do like the Aussie flavor this one gets from the filming locations.

The chemistry between the cast members is the strongest part of this film. The plot is sort of a sentimental reunion between 4 guys who have not seen each other in years since being prisoners of the Viet Cong. This reunion is bitter sweet. Sweet is the reunion of a man and woman who missed each other many years before when he left to serve his country.

It's focus on happy endings is trite and predictable. Still, if you want a sort of happy ending, it is here for you. Sadly the journey there needs some script tuning. A better script might have arrived from the men's room, but did not arrive on time.

The End Of An Era
dcarroll7410 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
James Bond is finally dead, long live James Bond. Who's idea was it to make the intro in a foreign language?

That has NEVER happened in the previous movies.

What happens to the viewers who will never get to see the movie in a cinema? When the subtitles will not work?

The longest Bond movie ever created, will become a dionsaur, all because some fool changed the opening sequence, using a language other than English.

Recommended for anyone who remembers the 1960s.
-6286 November 2020
Never Too Late - Reactions to this movie were mixed, so my expectations weren't high. However, I'm with those who really liked the movie. The first 15 minutes were outstanding. The pace did slow for a while but overall the movie was funny, moving and contained some great music from the 60s, which is ideal for the target audience. The acting is top notch and, while the storyline is a stretch, that's what makes for some great humour. Recommended for anyone who remembers the 1960s and the music of that era - and for anyone who enjoys great acting and humour.

The start was quite captivating and expectations were high. As the film progressed further, expectations were disappointing. Dear Actors, the script lingered towards the end.

The characters were a complete mix and very relatable. Lots of funny moments and the musical mix was top notch. An unexpected twist in the tail made for a great feel-good ending.

Romantic comedy with seniors shining
meryltheboss10 November 2020
A lovely romantic comedy where the stars deliver great performances.

A sweet funny film, a rare occasion in Australian films telling senior aged stories as the lead.

An enjoyable feel good comedy.
