Gutsy filmmaking pays off!
Wilygoose18 December 2018
I approached this film with some dubiousness. A low budget film based on a stage play could've been one step off a live screening of a theatre performance. Red Call, I am pleased to say, avoids this but keeps a feeling of danger about it, like something could blow up at any minute.

The opening sequence, a colourful, somewhat indeterminable melees of images pertaining to an act of terror, sets out the film's stall - this is cinema, not theatre - and the kind that will require some interpretation from the audience.

The story follows the questioning of Samaritan councelor Fran, who took a call from a terrorist committing suicide whilst on the line (Red Call is the term for this). But what should be a routine line of enquiry has the dark edge of an interrogation that leaves you unsure whether it's the police or our main protagonist with something to hide.

As the plot unfolds, so do the layers of this story and the result is a taut, smart thriller with a wistful, poetic edge.

In less delicate hands this film could've been discardable or melodramatic. Steve Gough took a huge risk making something as highly sensitive and resonant as Red Call on such a low budget, but the compelling performances, writing and direction prove to be all the budget required.

Red Call Drama

A return to real, intense drama. There are no wasted minutes, no padding. What you get is intense, breath-holding. The story is convincing, the performance by the tight knit cast flawless. It is a story of our time. At the end, you are still watching as the main character is still watched. Highly recommended.

A great film worth watching. I loved the storyline and the battle within the young woman which was acted with tenderness and class. I also loved the interesting twists and turns providing tension and culminating in a very inspirational way. Great script direction and performances Also dignified and respectful to the viewers.

A truly memorable and gripping film
rf-904941 December 2018
This is a taut psychological thriller which takes a terrorist attack as its start point but which reflects our current debate around the vulnerability of the individual when faced with possible distortions of the truth. We're never quite sure where that truth lies and, as rising tension in the dialogue of mutual distrust reaches boiling point, we're increasingly drawn into a claustrophobic, Kafkaesque nightmare of doubt and uncertainty. Wholly believable - and often very moving - acting combines to great effect with long takes, an unsettling mix of colour and black-and-white and great hand-held camera work, to create an atmosphere of immediacy and unpredictability. A truly memorable and gripping film.
