Saving Star Wars one episode at a time.

Warning: Spoilers
IG-11 killing every stormtrooper in sight while baby yoda giggles on his lap may be the best thing I've ever seen on a TV show. Thank you Mr. Favreau, you're killing it.

Humor was used perfectly
georgellama27 December 2019
Not only was this a great story but the humor was natural. There wasn't an out of place one-liner or a character doing something stupid just for a laugh. The speed bike troops at the beginning were hilarious, but the humor was not forced or silly. Now that the Skywalker saga is done, let's see more ideas based in the Star Wars universe without a planet destroying weapon being used in every story.

This is the Star Wars fans wanted
Kingofnarwhals27 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Mandalorian is one of my favorite things to come from Disney. It's probably the best written Star Wars content to come from Disney Star Wars (I loved Rogue One as well, but this might top it).

This was the best episode in a show with 8 great episodes. The writing, acting, soundtrack, directing all feeling like the Star Wars we know and love. My only real problem with this episode and the whole show really is that it did such a great job of compacting a story into 8 forty ish minute episodes that I wished they were longer, but that's not really a major complaint, if anything, I'm just feeling excited for what's to come.

Giancarlo Esposito absolutely crushes his role as Moff Gideon and I'm super happy that Jon Favreau did us Star Wars fans a solid and gave some fantastic character building.

The action scenes were tense and were thrilling to watch, as I'd expect from Star Wars but the ones showcased in this final episode were truly the best in the season.

I don't mean to spoil too much but my favorite parts of the episode was definitely two scenes. The heroic sacrifice of IG-11 and the very final scene with Moff Gideon on top of his personal Tie Fighter.

Overall, an amazing end to a very promising show that I cannot wait to see more of, this is the way.

The android had more character than the whole trilogy
ilcool9028 December 2019
I enjoyed the whole season, and was smiling all the way through the final episode. It's as dark as parts of Revenge of the Sith. Also it is very down to earth, and I really cared about all the characters and specially the Android.

Disney hurry up and release toys of this show, I want them all.

Warning: Spoilers
A lot of spoilers ahead you've been warned.

Since the very first scene with Mando aka Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the bar I knew this show was going to be special. And man was I right. I appreciate every aspect of this series. I mean this wasn't even hyped that much and I think that's what made it so great. We live in a world saturated by multiple trailers and leaks that it takes the magic away from the story. It is nice to be pleasantly surprised. Every Episode was very engaging. Each episode will leave you wanting more and more. This was mainly due to the great acting from Pedro and his supporting cast. It is very difficult to invoke emotion while wearing a helmet 99.9% of the time. But Pedro Pascal nails it as the Mandalorian. Emily Swallow "The Armorer" given her appearances are very limited she also did a stupendous job at captivating you through her mask. I was also very pleased to hear Nick Nolte as Kuiil. Honestly one of my favorite characters this season was Kuiil. He was the moral compass of the series; very useful character also very well written and charismatic. Cara Dune of Alderaan (Gina Carano) is without a doubt the best thing on the show besides "Baby Yoda" aka the Child. Her and Mando are perfect for each other. They compliment each other very well. They have such great chemistry due to their military backgrounds that it almost feels like they've known each other for a long time. That goes to show how good the writing is for this series. Taika Watiti is great as IG-11 a hunter droid later turned nurse. Carl Weathers delivered a stunning performance as Greef Carga. But the man who really stole the show is Giancarlo Esposito as Mof Gideon. He probably had no more than 30 minutes of screen time but let me tell you those are the best 30 minutes by any villain in all of Star Wars specially the very last minute *wink wink*. And of course The Child "Baby Yoda". Not only is he going to be the face of The Mandalorian as far as toy sells go but he's also a very useful character and adds to the story. I'm glad they could come to the conclusion that you can have a best selling toy but also make them pivotal to the story. All in all this show deserves a bigger budget so they can truly have no limits on what they can do. I recommend watching even if you're not a Star Wars fanatic. May the force be with you, I have spoken...

Mandalorian isn't a race, it's a creed!
jdgtc127 December 2019
This 8 episode first season, is better than the entire "new" Star Wars Trilogy. This episode is everything Star Wars movies could have been this decade, and sadly were not.

Kudos to Jon Favreau and all of the other writers and directors who made this show EPIC! Thank You!

This is the way! This is Star Wars!

This is THE WAY, This is THE STAR WARS WE WANT
nihonjin-6303127 December 2019
Let Chow, Favreau and Filoni take care of every Star Wars movies from now on. The Mandalorian just washed all sins from the last three movies. Every second gives the action that EVERY Star Wars fan wants and needs to feel The Force.

If i could give a rate of a 100 i would have give it. It deserves it.

Taika Waititi dumbs down the franchise
scott-donaldson29 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is Waititi's only episode as director, and his signature comedy is all over it (for better or for worse). A cursory review of his bio in IMDB returns the link "How Taika Waititi Balances Emotion and Humor on Film". Not a bad thing, but I'll get to that later.

Perhaps the Disney executives received feedback from their focus groups that "The Mandalorian" was considered too serious, and more humour was needed to avoid alienating a younger audience if season 2 was to be a success. Whatever the reason, it is noteworthy that while directors like Dave Filoni and Deborah Chow were entrusted with several episodes (which they delivered impeccably in terms of tone, pacing and narrative) it was left to Waititi to end season 1.

In my opinion, Waititi has delivered an easily consumed crowd-pleasing finale to season 1 (demonstrated by episode 8 having the highest IMDB rating so far), but his use of cheap gags and cartoon-like fight scenes disappoints me; I remain hopeful that this is not a sign of what to expect in season 2. Meanwhile, the beautiful cinematography and attention to small details -- all delivered in an understated manner -- in episode 1, reminds me of what could have been.

Positives Favreau's writing continues to be magnificent.

Negatives -The Stormtroopers are comical, and not in a good way. Easily killed, and when IG-11 goes on the attack, it seems likely it will be able to kill all of them by itself. Yet later IG-11 considers it necessary to self-destruct to destroy a platoon of them. -The dialogue and interactions between the bike scouts was so laboured, I was waiting for canned laughter to come in. -None of the stormtroopers can hit Mando, yet Moff Gideon casually knocks him down with a single shot, then shoots an explosive to incapacitate him further.
  • Moff Gideon, the most significant villain scripted so far in the series, and the casting of Giancarlo Esposito. This appears an error when his lightweight onscreen presence is compared to that of Werner Herzog (The Client).

On a separate note, one of the aspects I enjoyed most about the episodes prior to this one, was the sensitive characterisation of the non-human roles. I would include Mando in this category, for the simple reason that his concealed identity, and limited dialogue, made him enigmatic and "machine-like": yet we could relate to him as a person through his memory flashbacks, observing his frailty in battle, the misfortunes that befell him, and his occasional sighs of resignation. All directed with a light touch, to show glimpses of his humanity and makes us care about him. Perhaps greater care was made to characterise Kuiil and the robot IG-11, than the other human characters: certainly Kuill and IG-11 are probably my favourite characters in season 1. It is ironic that it is Waititi who provides the voice to the IG-11, and for me that is probably his greatest achievement in the series.

Stupidity overload
YourAverageReviewer27 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So many cliches, so many overused tropes all in one episode. They threw the entire book of Disney in one episode.

Villain needs to capture the kid? Send two storm troopers in which we show how stupid they are with no instructions on what to do with it. Okay, fine. I can live with that.

Villain needs to kill the Mandalorian? Goes as far as killing his own men to get to him. Then tells him he can decide by nightfall because he wants to "talk".

Mandalorian magically gets out because AI robot 360 no scope hype and a pretty dull action scene commences. Villain has open shot on Mandalorian, takes two shots. Watches him get dragged to safety and... waits. Looks over and says, "Burn it down!"

Are we serious right now? This is the worst villain and storytelling I've witnessed in a long time. It was a comedy for me.

The only people could rate this 10/10 is a cult following who are drooling at the mouth as they screech "this is the way".

I'd prefer a different way.

All that The Rise of the Skywalker should be
dpasaric27 December 2019
The last episode of The Mandalorian concludes this brilliant series in most satisfying way. It's hard not to compare this already epic series with the last Star Wars movie failure. The Mandalorian has it all: vibrant storytelling, tension, suspense, great editing and rhythm and, most importantly, the characters that you can connect with. I was on the edge of my seat so many times during The Mandalorian that the last Star Wars movie feels like some generic fast-food-movie-making instead of an original saga ending. For me, this is the real Star Wars, it's so enjoyable and done with great care and love. This is the way!

Phenomenal
rjkeenan27 December 2019
The first 3 episodes and episode 7 were great, but the finale was perfect. Waititi's comedic sense was noticeable from the first scene, but there was also a great deal of heart and tons of action with a nice pace. The acting was good- a few episodes in the middle suffered from poor casting, but this one was done right in every sense. Maybe Waititi should just direct all of them next season. It was definitely a pleasure to watch.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is everything, action, acting, story. The villain was good, we finally see Mando liking a droid. We finally see his face, he gets his jet pack. And we learn how he became a mandalorian. The ending was also great, the dark saber. This show is so great, only eight episodes and it's already one of the greatest shows of 2019.

Terrible End to a Formerly-Great Series
SamJohnsonWayneright12 January 2020
Were they just trying to pad the runtime for half of this episode? Wacky stormtroopers spend an eternity blithering on with a half-baked comedy routine. An artfully told backstory is retold, as if by an idiot, explicitly showing what had already been implied, shoehorned into a scene where it had no business being. Then we spend even more time on expository dialogue which excrutiatingly tells the audience even more of what it already knew. Tick-tock. Hope you didn't like Werner as a villain, or find him at all menacing. He's an idiot, now. Worse, a dead idiot. It's a good thing that the bad guys are all morons in this episode, or our heroes might have been in trouble. You have until sundown to surrender, now that I have you trapped like a rat in a snare. I hope you don't use all that time to escape. Why did we see his face? So he could have disinfectant sprayed on it? How dramatic. Disneytroopers show up to be scary for a couple minutes, in case you were nostalgic for Disney's Star Wars, a Disney Story. Stormtroopers are idiots made of cardboard who we've been tearing through all episode long, better kill myself to kill six of them.

The biggest idiot in all of this is me, because I got invested in this series, and really, really liked it. Ha.

Thanks, Waititi.

Silly plot
thibault-li22 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Despite high production value as usual, plot is very stupid. Star Wars was never known for its smart plot or character development, I didn't expect much on these aspects but "enough is enough" :
  • One droid killing half of the stormtroopers (they are useless as usuals) in town on its own
  • Mandalorian's brotherhood massacred by the same above stormtroopers
  • The Mandalorian in love with the droid
  • Not finishing Gideon even knowing that his ship didn't explode (professional misconduct)
  • Cara and Greef choosing to stay on the planet after having killed several imperial officers
It was OK, I didn't get bored but it's sad that a TV show with Game of Thrones budget is such an insult to our intelligence

Botched finale of a great season. This is the way now I guess.
afr_frnk28 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was really excited to watch the finale, having really enjoyed all previous episodes. Starts off good, we see a bit of humanity in the stormtroopers, kind of unusual for starwars, but cool. Moff Guideon, the antagonist's threat is real, whatever a E-web is, I'm scared. But then, the non-sense starts...

#1 For some unforeseeable reason, Moff looks back at the sun and extends his grace to sundown?? What??? Did he have to take an important call back to his ship? If only...

#2 The killer robot says "my mission is to protecc this kid". Proceeds to run into a platoon of stormtrooper on a speedbike. Brillant

#3.1 The Mandalorian is bleeding; wants to be left behind at the cantina. Denied #3.2 The Mandolorian found some helmets; wants to be left behind. Denied #3.3 The Mandolorian likes it a the blacksmith; wants to be left behind. Denied.

#4 Then we get to rewatch The Terminator scarifying himself into lava. Would have been humoristic to raise his thumb up and say "Astalavista" before blowing himself up. Coincidentally all the stormtroopers are within the explosion radius.

#5 Moff, armed with an imperial spaceship, can not, for the life of god, aim at his enemy.

#6 Mando takes him down, but even if he's the fiercest killer in the galaxy, doesn't think to check if Moff is actually dead....mmmmmk

10/10 for this episode? Seriously? Are you all deprived of common sense?? Please rewatch.
