A less vulgar "Les Kassos"
hidore28 October 2019
It's like "Les Kassos" had a baby with "Bob's Burgers". It's half decent. I'll keep watching it.

Amusing.
icelandknight11 August 2022
Confession: I did not "LAUGH" (so far)... but I repeatedly was "Amused". I can image it will be a great show for lovers of (old) monster movies. (Of which I am one.) Its an interesting premise: "Therapist of Monsters", and one that could be made great.

A lot of people compared it to "Ugly Americans" (tt1621748), if one has seen that, but also the "Therapist" part could remind some of the crazy patients of "Dr. Katz" (tt0111942)... which is also a cartoon.

However, after watching a few episodes, then the "Trailer" randomly came up, it did show how the episodes seem to be written around one liners. So, the trailer was full of episode SPOILERS, since each episode is short, and the one liner WAS kinda the whole episode, and even some of those seemed to be somewhat "cheesy", when one looks back. So, although they were great when one herd them the first time, they did not age well, when revealed the be the whole point of each episode... So even though one wants to love the show, one starts to understand some of the negative reviews. Possibly not all of us were as star struck (seeing our favorite monsters), and saw through the Emperor's New Clothes?

Personally I loved every episode, and hope there will be loads more. We still have plenty of monsters to choose from.

Reminiscent of Ugly Americans
mindyfrostbite14 October 2019
These short, bite-sized little episodes remind me of "Ugly Americans" - which was a great cartoon we lost way too soon.

I would love to see longer, even 15 minute episodes of "You're Not a Monster". I don't know if the plan is to move forward with anything more than what's already been assembled, but I'm rooting for this little show to find its footing and give us more!

Yawn.
kepeb18 October 2019
Actively sought to find this as the concept sounded great. Unfortunately, it's yet another half assed attempt at humor by largely unfunny people. It's too slow, has predictable dialogue and uses the horrorconcept only as a means to deliver this. It's a great shame because there is a lot you could use and explore with the horror character set.

Hilarious new show!
sarahfgoldman12 October 2019
So many great people in this show! Kelsey Grammer is so funny as the vampire. I had to watch twice- it's so fast-paced and the jokes don't stop. I can't wait for more episodes!

Bland, short, predictable, boring
loocsinatas11 October 2019
Feels like a cheap knock-off of Ugly Americans. Animation, voice acting, and humor all sub par.

It's got that certain quality where you instantly realize it's not going to be that great of a show.

Frankly put, it's just not that funny or original.

Original and Fun
Anya89317 October 2019
You're Not a Monster is a fun comedy with heart. There are so many fun nods and allusions for horror fans. The storylines are unpredictable and grounded in relatable characters. It's easy to get engrossed in. My only problem is that there isn't more of it! Definitely check it out.

The worst kind of bad.
mortymortadella23 October 2019
There are different kinds and flavors of bad. But which one's the worst? Offensive? Incompetent? Cynical? Manipulative? Gross? I'd say the worst kind of bad is "DULL". And that's probably the most fitting word to describe this show - and one of the only fitting words as well. The setup - where classic monsters, ghouls, ghosts, etc are part of our society and they're having appointments with our lead, a psychiatrist - could be a fun one. Not a terribly original one, but it's not a bad foundation. Everything else about this show is executed on the bare minimum level. The jokes are lame, unfunny, barely there, but inoffensive, the character-design is the blandest I've ever seen, but at least it's not gross, the environments has just enough work put into them, so you can recognize what they're supposed to be, the voice-work is good, i guess? With scripts this inconsequential, it doesn't matter much. Storyboard-art and editing is absolute garbage. There are terrible jump-cuts, boring framing, but the errors and spacial problems are just on the brink of making the film confusing. "Fortunately", almost nothing matters in these stories and they're over really fast, so before you start thinking about it too hard, it's already done and gone. The animation is as cheap as they can possibly get away with. I hope they finished the whole thing in a week - in that case at least they've been efficient.

Original and hilarious
robertangier-5615825 October 2019
Honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this series. Took a chance on an ad, and I'm very glad I did. It's a brilliantly original idea with fantastically witty writing and whimsical characters, backed up with an excellent cast that any fan of the classic horror genre will enjoy. I would love to see more of You're Not A Monster in the future, hopefully in a longer format. I'm eager to get to know the characters and to have their universe fleshed out some more, as I have absolutely no doubt that Mr. Lesser has an abundance of interesting ideas that definitely deserve to be explored

Bad, bad, BAD show -- HORRIBLE, actually! And not because of the monsters, I've to say
martincigorraga7 November 2019
I'm always looking for funny shows like this, being a fan of The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Family Guy / American Dad or Bojack Horseman -- to name a few.

So when I saw this show was being broadcasted for free to "celebrate Halloween" (and also sell the show, but they don't say that, of course!), I gave it a try.

Dude! This is unwatchable, LOL! The jokes ara ugly, the characters have no depth, no point of connection, the dialogues are pretty shallow... I think I was able to make it to the fifth episode because each episode lasts ~5 minutes, since I was waiting for the moment the kicked off, but that never happens.

The shallow boringness you see in the first episode is the one that sets the mood for all the next episodes to come.

Only watch this if you are in for some morbid time, ajj!

It's basically Ugly Americans
amarbdmi19 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have just gone through few episodes, but I already felt a strong Ugly Americans vibe. In some sense this IS a shorter version of Ugly Americans, where a normal guy tries to live in a big city, but his job compiles him to meet and help various weird monsters. And needless to say, it's not nearly as good as the original.

Surprisingly Great - More Please!
muse_68817 October 2019
I'll admit: I'm not big into cartoons. However, I remembered LOLing at Lesser's "Sad Monsters" book from awhile back, and when I noticed his name listed as the show creator -- followed by a who's who of comedy listed as cast -- I gave the first episode a try. And then the second. And then the third. And then the fourth....OK yeah this is really funny stuff. I want more. IMDB are you listening??

The worst comedy can be - not funny
moviewatcher-268783 November 2019
This feels like baby's first comedy. The timings are off, the jokes are predictable and about as "good" as the ones in American Pie. Animations are subpar. The only things solid is the audio work.

Pretty creative and very clever. Warning: Spoilers
Love the dry, subtle humor. The repeated references to Dracula is one of my favorite parts.

Love it! Original and worthwhile!
downandoutdrifter19 October 2019
Love this concept and would love to see it in a longer form. The jokes are sharp, the idea is novel, and the cast is amazing! It's laugh out loud funny but there are lot of subtle jokes that reward the careful viewer.

Bite-Sized Fun
jeff-brewer18 October 2019
This is my first review, of anything, on IMDb. I have been using this site for years, but this is the first time I ever felt like doing a review of a show, so that should tell you something...

I am a sucker for witty animation, and this hit the spot! Episodes are on-point, and easy to digest (that's enough of that - on to the review!).

The writer(s) really know their stuff, and the cast are top notch. Each patient, and their issues, were spot on, pop-culture wise. The humour is a good mix: over the top sexual innuendo from Kelsey Grammer, and mostly dead-pan deliveries from the other regular cast. The guest cast are all great, with special mention to Patton Oswalt. Such a distinct voice. I would listen to him doing a reading of the phone book...

The ten episodes flew by, and it was over too soon. I hope there are more seasons planned, as I really want to see how the shock twist ending pans out. Also, is there a future for a Succubus and a therapist, and will he even notice?

I ship Max-Nia!
hkschwartz19 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Eric Stonestreet as Dr. Max is a great straight man to all the mayhem around him including Kelsey Grammer's vampire great grandfather/ex therapist. I especially loved the ep Headless Over Heels specifically for the Kardashian gag. I ship Max-Nia!!!

I love this!
brumm-mike10 November 2019
I really, really enjoyed this. I started watching these not knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. The writing is super funny and clever, and I love the therapy angle. Also, I'm a big fan of Frasier, so it was nice seeing Kelsey back in a therapy role ... even as a vampire. I'd recommend! More please.

I thought this was a show about Monster Trucks!
DRenn1208 November 2019
But man was I otherwise surprised. Fantastic program. Voice actors are all perfect for their roles, animation fits the show well, stories are hilarious and incredibly well done. Excited to see what they have in store for season 2.

Hilarious show
kent_roberts8 March 2020
This show is hilarious, as expected from the creator and cast.

It is impressive to see someone who has been so political through *The Colbert Report* (where this series' creator, Frank Lesser, was a longtime staff writer) craft something so straightforwardly silly. I like that Lesser is expanding within this vein, having previously released the book *Sad Monsters* (Plume, 2011).

I have a theory related to the reviews here. On the world's most popular bookseller's site, *Sad Monsters* is rated 4 1/2 out of 5 stars -- and the humor should be very similar since it's from the same guy. The ratings/reviews on this show are extreme to both ends... people seem to either love or hate it. Some of the negative reviews are basically trolls, so here's my take:

-- Trolls are attracted to shows about monsters, being closely related creatures. -- Trolls are attracted to short-form, needing to quickly make mean little comments since efficiency is central to spreading bad energy effectively.
