Don't be hatin, worth a watch!
info-21523-4524224 November 2023
Annoys me when people give low ratings for no reason, or after just 1 episode!

Anyway, this is a decent sci fi, good claustrophobic in space vibes, and Lena Hadley is brilliant as always. If you liked the Expanse and generally like sci fi, give it a watch.

I wonder sometimes when there's low reviews if it's targeted to try and tank a show, which is pretty lame isn't it. I hope that doesn't happen to this show, the characters are likeable, I'm intrigued as to what's going to happen, the effects are good and the world they've created has been well thought out.

I hope this review has encouraged you to give this show a watch.

What is the point and why should it interest me?
1ch03 December 2023
As an ardent admirer of Lena Headey's work, I embarked on the journey of watching this new show with a heart full of anticipation and high expectations. Lena's previous performances had set a benchmark, and I was eager to see her magic unfold once again on the screen. However, after dedicating my time to three full episodes, I find myself in a state of confusion and disappointment.

The plot seems to be wandering aimlessly, with no clear direction or purpose. It's like being lost in a maze with no exit in sight. The storyline, which should ideally be a roadmap guiding the viewers, appears to be a tangled web with no discernible path. I am left questioning the ultimate goal of the narrative and the message it intends to convey.

The crux of the problem, I believe, lies in the emotional disconnect I am experiencing with the storyline. A truly engaging narrative has the power to draw in its audience, making them feel a part of the unfolding drama. It should be able to evoke a spectrum of emotions, from joy and excitement to suspense and intrigue. This emotional investment acts as the glue that binds the viewers to the characters and their journey.

Unfortunately, this show seems to lack that vital hook. The storyline fails to captivate, leaving me as a viewer feeling detached and uninterested. The narrative lacks the compelling factor that makes one eagerly await the next episode. It's like reading a book where the characters fail to come alive, and the plot fails to stir any emotion.

In conclusion, while I started watching the show as a fan of Lena Headey, the lack of a captivating narrative and emotional engagement has left me quite disappointed. I hope the forthcoming episodes bring about a positive change and manage to reignite the spark that seems to be missing currently.

I think I know why there are bad reviews
uberdonkey626 March 2024
The actors aren't a problem, they're all pretty good. Male lead is actually impressive. Story iis interesting and develops.. it goes somewhere and is somewhat original. The sets are good and though (necessarily) a bit limited, it's fine. I liked watching it but it wasn't 100% gripping.

So what's wrong? Well.. there is no subplot. While the dialogue isn't bad and the script is fine, it loses tension because there is no sufficient subplot to create enough dramatic tension. Yes the lead went AWOL, but his feelings and the tension not built into the story in an effective way. The focus on the main story and lack of subplot significantly reduces the tension in the series. Despite this, I enjoyed watching it, but it's something I could watch while ironing or washing up because really all I want to do is find out what the plot conclusion is, and I'm not heavily invested in the characters. Worth a watch of you like scifi and some interesting ideas but don't expect it to be the next Battlestar Galactica, or Moonhaven (yes I loved Moonhaven even though it has a bad rating for some reason).

Too many flaws
tknmzombie13 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
MGM made a wise decision in hiring Lena Heady and the set designers for the space lighthouse, as the premise of the show is intriguing. The isolation of being in the middle of space, similar to a lighthouse keeper's assignment, can lead to mental instability, especially when combined with the lack of trust towards a new team member. The addition of alien rocks adds to the excitement of the series. However, the lack of continuity in Lena Heady's hair and uniform changes from scene to scene is a major flaw. The inconsistency in the uniform's design and Heady's hairstyle is a clear oversight by the hair and costume department. Additionally, the concept of future medicines being called "prints" requires them to be printed every time, but the show forgets this detail, leading to a lack of continuity. Furthermore, Lena Heady's English accent is inconsistent, which may not be a significant issue, but it is still a flaw. Lastly, the show blatantly ignores Stephen James' character being stabbed, which is a significant plot hole. MGM's decision to release the first episode on Amazon Prime to attract new viewers is not a good move, given the show's flaws.

What is going on?
Henry722714 April 2024
The first season was pretty good. It followed along with the book enough that it held my attention. Just tried watching the second episode of the second season and I gave up about three quarters of the way through. I have no clue what is going on anymore. It is as if the writers are on drugs. The long plot is gone. There may be a secondary plot going on but it is not realistic and little to do with the long term plot.

The acting is ok. I could not see any problems with the CGI. Sound and background music is good. None of that matters though without a decent plot.

Watch the first season and think of it as a mini-series. Skip anything after that.

Interesting Enough for a Plan to watch Episode 3. But It must Hook Me Better by Then
tdwillis-2627313 November 2023
The opening scenes drew me in immediately. I love Lena and always enjoy her acting skills and the other actors did admirable jobs.

The setting is interesting and futuristic appearing.

I think where this series may be off putting to some is the story. I'm really hoping that future episodes gives us some more character depth. I've watched the first 2 episodes and am interested enough to continue but I'll be needing a bit more action and/or something that makes me feel like I know the characters more intimately.

So far it's borderline for me as to if I'll make it thru the whole series. I am pretty patient and actually prefer character driven stories but admittedly It drags a bit.

Monumentally dumb
BLAlley17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Beacon 23 is yet another science fiction show that thinks adding holographic displays and control interfaces serve as an adequate substitute for the "science" part of the genre's name.

A beacon in space serving as the eventual evolution of present-day lighthouses to aid space travel is an interesting idea, until it becomes obvious that is as far as the idea was developed before this train wreck was greenlit and put into production.

I seriously doubt the book it's supposedly based on is this bad. Five minutes in and I had to turn off this minimum-effort train wreck.

First we start with a flash forward where three characters stand and watch something bad (?) happen without taking any action, then we jump to "earlier" because the writers apparently never bothered to plan out their timeline, or learn how to establish their setting.

Next we see a ship that seems to be engaged in some form of FTL travel, yet it approaches the beacon at a normal rate that allows them to use radio communication and visually see the beacon.

That's because the titular beacon turns out to be a literal beacon of light (LOL). Good luck picking that out of the vast blackness of space, especially as slow as it's rotating (when the effects team remembered to make it rotate). It's also rotating on a two-dimensional plane. A two-dimensional plane. In space.

Even worse, the beacon is supposedly warning that there is "too much dark matter" in the area. Did someone dump the dark matter before jumping into hyperspace, or was the dark matter always there and the reason for the beacon? Funny how they can detect the dark matter and even display it as random blobs around the sector (on the aforementioned holographic display), even though there doesn't appear to be anything nearby with which it can interact in order to be detected.

Of course the computer suddenly malfunctions for no reason, projecting the "safe" white light instead of the red "danger" light that would be even more difficult to see in space. The communications are also magically malfunctioning so the caretaker can't warn the ship as it slowly approaches at light speed (?). In response, we get a scene involving gravity that defies physics. Forget science and logic as long as it looks cool, right?

The hilariously bad choices continue when the caretaker reaches the actual light, which is alternately rotating and stationary depending on the shot. His solution is to take a space prybar and wedge it between two big gears which presumably are part of the mechanism rotating the light, yet his actions instead cause the light to flicker between white and red. Seriously? They wrote this on a machine that has access to the world's knowledge yet couldn't be bothered to look up a single detail

The entire idea is moot, of course, since ships would navigate via mathematics and computer tracking of the stars. If you needed a beacon to warn of threats it would would emit a constant radio signal at a standard power level that would be picked up and processed automatically by every passing ship, and there would be multiple redundant systems to ensure reliability. More likely there would be multiple beacons surrounding the entire sector at a safe distance to warn ships away, not wait until they are close enough to see a light, which would place them inside the sector or even past it.

Storytelling and science fiction in particular have gotten so brain dead to be unwatchable save for the very rare exception, and Beacon 23 is definitely not an exception.

It's a slow start, but it's worth it
subpardaemon4 December 2023
At least so far. Five episodes in, I'm more than ready to forgive the first episode, which was not even a little bit of a mess. Maybe the in medias res attitude was necessary -- and looking back, even warranted -- but it sure did not make it easy to get hooked.

The show gets its footing by episode 3, and is not quickly becoming a very low-key but high-concept thing. And it's not even cheating, as a scifi mystery show does not need huge set pieces, just something to make you think about things.

The well-contained setting of an interstellar lighthouse might seem dire or uninteresting, but the characters here, their stories and their choices make this thing worth the while.

My suggestion: keep watching (survive EP1, I guarantee things get better as soon as EP2) at least until EP5, if you're still not convinced, then OK, this show is not for you. As for me, I'm hooked.

Philosophical Sci-Fi mystery
info-617517 December 2023
This isn't your ordinary day-to-day sci-fi, it's more a slow drama on the same road as Stargate Universe - but without the incredible cast. Don't get me wrong though, the cast is fine, the characters are just less interesting and un-useful.

The story is the main focus here though, it starts simple but becomes more and more complicated. The outcome is not as predictable as one may think at first. The pacing is very slow though, they should have built out a much more thorough story so there's less fillers.

I did like the conclusion though but I hope there's a second season coming, this one isn't enough.

A mess of characters and convoluted plot
fivish-119 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched all 8 episodes, I have no idea who these people are why they are there and what the artifact has to do with anything. People arrive, kill or be killed and we dont know why. The beacon puts out a beam of light which a person can stand in front of! You would assume it was very powerful and able to reach light years and its on a linear plane in 3D space! There is a drone AI and an AI hollogram in human form. Their presence and roll is unexplaned. Suddenly, after the MacGuffin consolidates outside the beacon they know its moving between universes or something. They know when its going to return, based on what? The last two episodes I thought would make some sense of the previous six episodes but it was a mess of.exposition and morality I think. Overall a waste of my time. Series 2 might be worth avoiding.

Excellent!
dalescotbates16 November 2023
OK, a lot of negative reviews on here and the majority seem to be from people who have read the book. I get that but I accepted a long time ago that books/novels and films/TV series are completely different ways to take in a story. For example, Frankenstein the book, and the 1930s film bear almost relation to each other but are wonderful pieces of art on their own. Game of Thrones was a better TV series than the book, in my opinion.

Well, having never read the book, and only being two episodes in, here is my tuppence worth. The first episode is a slow burner and seems to be about setting up the characters who seem to be and interesting little bunch. It has haunted lighthouse feel to it and the look to the show is pretty damn good.

By the second episode, things really take off. And I have to say I am on tenter hooks. I only give it 8 because I don't normally review until I have finished a show. But this looks to be going in the right direction, to me. It's no Expanse (also a book I have never read), but it looks pretty damn promising to me.

Great sci-fi. It deserves better reviews or a better audience...
AttitudeInc24 December 2023
I don't get the bad reviews. This show has a great story that unfolds a bit more every episode. The acting is very well done and the two leads are excellent. The dialogue is sometimes simplistic in that it's there to move the story, not hit you in the feels or expand your mind but it's there to give you information so that things that have or will happen make some sort of sense. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of great dialogue, it's just used where it's needed, not to add flourishes to something that doesn't require it.

The script that everyone is dunking on manages to make you feel the vast space of the universe they're building. From the disparate types of people, languages and motivations to the thoroughly believable advanced tech.

Visually, they've done a great job. When appropriate, the CGI is well done and not overly flashy. Just solid and believable. Overall production design, sets and wardrobe are all great as well. Nothing about the show feels cheap or skimped over.

I feel like people are just mad because the writers aren't handing you scenes that show whether a person is good or bad. There's a lot of ambiguity going on but the show manages, if you give it a chance, to answer many of the questions that arise. That said, I also feel like the show has a lot more to say about a lot of things. Things like where AI is leading us and how we might interact with it. Whether some knowledge or "progress" is too expensive or dangerous. If humanity forcibly evolves itself are they still human? And of course, what's going on with the weird rocks?

They've obviously left room for more answers in a (thankfully) renewed second season and I look forward to more thought provoking, enjoyable and sometimes beautiful episodes.

If you're looking for non-stop action or nail biting suspense, this ain't it. If you're looking for good, solid, moderately hard sci-fi with some decent but infrequent action sequences and a bit of philosophy thrown in, this might just work for you.

Good setting, bad story telling
LuckyPaddy20 November 2023
This show is very appealing at first glance. A lighthouse in space. Very interesting concept. So many ideas flood my mind. I can't wait to meet/learn about the characters that will guide me into this world.

But there's a problem. EVERYTHING in this world(universe, i guess) is a black box mystery. The reason for a lighthouse in space, the characters and their motivations, the quest, the rocks(talisman). You end up asking yourself what is going on half the time. Why do I care for these people, who's the hero? Who's the villain? Why are they doing all this. Even glowing rocks have a mysterious purpose. I guess if you like knowing nearly nothing after 3 episodes. This is your type of show.

I'll try and revisit this show after the first season is complete. Black box story telling isn't interesting if everything is a black box.

lead cast good, writing & production - high school bad
spasticfreakshow14 November 2023
Agree with others who question how this script was greenlit. Lena and Stephan are above this garbage and I have to hope future episodes will redeem their choice to participate in this trainwreck. It's reminiscent of a Doctor Who episode that takes place all in one room. It's not about special effects, it's not about any actual plot line (the plot that is there is such unoriginal derivative tripe let's just pretend it's not there), it's not even about character development, which is also nonexistent. No: everything around them in this one setting is just there to spin very pointless and monotonous dialog. One has to wonder if some studio exec had a child, grandchild or nephew dreaming of become a television producer. It's inconceivable how else this script didn't get edited and rewritten prior to filming. If episode three isn't drastically improved, this will be a single season dud. This is a shame, primarily because we're always happy to have more science fiction series being produced. What a waste!

Wanting it to just get Better
trail196510 December 2023
I tend to rate things on watchability, wanting the next episode straight after the last, I will watch this but it is almost out of hope that it will get better.

The Acting is ok, I do not even mind limited cast and location, but the story line does not hold me. I love syfi, but I also love it for originality, this lacks, and I hope it will just get better. On the first episode I gave it a 7, but having watched 3 episodes now I have degraded this to 6, anyway the entire series will be watched and lets hope it will be something that improves and does not leave me regretting and not taking it down another notch.

Hoped for something good. Got... this.
jhuebel19 November 2023
Just to start... I haven't read the book (books?). So, I come into this series with no preconceived notions about what the show should be. I only knew that it was based on a book by the same author who wrote Silo, which was made into a series I enjoy very much.

Anyway, the first 30 seconds of episode 1 had me hopeful. The Crest flying through space looked interesting. The idea of a beacon steering ships clear of dark matter storms could have been good.

Then the dialog and plot started. That's when it all came crashing down. There are so many things in this series that are just completely off.

Halan is a painfully bad character, as is Aster. For starters, the trust that Aster puts in Halan seems very misplaced.

None of the secondary characters have been any better. I particularly dislike the two AI characters.

The apparent story arc for the season doesn't make much sense. I won't spoil it here. But it's dumb.

Anyway, I tried. I've watched the three current episodes and the show isn't improving. I'll give this a couple of stars for the visuals of space and the ideas of space beacons and dark matter storms. But that's a generous 2 stars.

Hard watch
john-43991 January 2024
This is not an easy watch but I feel many reviewers have been too hard on it. Many of the actors (especially Lena Headey) and special guests have put in strong performances. I cannot comment on suggestions of scientific accuracy that many have brought up but I don't think that is really the point and I am sure most sci-fi can be accused of that to some degree. It is a complex plot with a timeline that is not immediately intuitive to follow. You will not be able to watch this while chatting with friends as you won't follow what is going, it will require your full concentration. The question is whether all that hard work is worth it? For my part, I largely enjoyed it and it certainly gets better from about the third episode but I wouldn't watch it a second time! Why the makers made it so difficult to follow in such a non-addictive fashion is beyond me. I presume it was a style thing - taken a bit too far IMHO. There are some interesting ethical questions asked for this day and age and the story, once unravelled, isn't bad. Production is also pretty good. In short, don't sit down and expect a nice easy plot like you might get in Star Trek!

Like a bad Syfy channel show
morganparker212 November 2023
I was hoping for a good new sci fi series but its pretty awkward and the effects are really off-putting. This is a long way off from Silo, another Hugh Howey based show. I have never read that book but so far I don't care about anything going on and it just sounds like sci fi nonsense from people who don't know anything about sci fi. I turned off the second episode during a terrible zero gravity fight scene, that was all I could take. Anyway I don't think I'll give it another go, the visuals are a big problem for me, it just looks like a bad Syfy channel show that will be cancelled soon. I'm happy Silo exists but it's too bad we can't get more decent space sci fi.

Liking it
annebouscal22 December 2023
Not sure why all the terrible reviews. It's a sci-fi mystery. We don't know anything about the lead characters, their location, their purpose, or their respective affiliations when the series opens. I couldn't wait to learn more about them. I've only watched the first two episodes, but I'm definitely hooked on the series and the protagonists.

As even the haters noted, the actors are very solid. They portray credible individuals experiencing a range of emotions. I like the droid and AI with their blend of human emotion and machine logic. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I'd say give it a chance and decide for yourself.

Continuity...
davidjdoyle-140-89233514 January 2024
Continuity... or a lack thereof. This show suffers from so many continuity breaks between scenes that makes watching very frustrating.

So many scenes pieced together seemingly out of order... characters that were just arguing or a tense scene to the next where everyone is as if it never happened or a long time has passed when it clearly hasn't. It takes you out of the story every time.

Every episode seems to have several of these continuity breaks and at first I thought it might be some oddball plot device to move through the story but after the E03, it was clear it's just poor production and editing.

It's a shame as the original story by Hugh Howey has been ruined here.

What the hell is this?
ash-cpo22 April 2024
As Peter Griffin would say, "What the hell is this?" The whole show is is so slow in developing the story and the characters.

Note for the creators/writers: The content is saturated with average to above average shows. If you can't create above average content, don't waste people's time.

Since IMDB wants me to waste more time writing about how this show is average, I should say that after watching two or three episodes, I don't know where it is going. I don't know what is the significance of the lighthouse in the space and the sea and the painting. Those of you who watched some early episodes would know what I am talking about. This show is a waste of time.

Remember there is no clear timeline for this story yet
PaulEndymion29 November 2023
Watched 4 episodes and I am really into it.

I really don't get the current reviews of this title. People talk about writing and how the plot does not feel real or accurate. People, no timeline has been set yet, so everything is possible in a certain way.

Not everything has to be explained like in japanese anime. I believe if you are a science fiction veteran, you will find you own landmarks until the plot unfolds, if it does.

I love that each episodes brings a new science fiction theme, but most of all I love the mystery aspect of each characters. Characters don't have contemporary behaviors, so in my opinion that is another set of clues to make hypothesis about the "outside world of the beacon".

I also think the script is good, interactions between characters feels weird and out of this world, but again, it takes place in a fully unknown world. Even AI are cool and weirdly designed which brings something new to AI driven stories.

It reminds me of some K. Dick. Work, or a mix of shows like Altered Carboned and Nightflyers (the latter was not that good in my opinion).

Had a beacon of hope
mcintyre-161038 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This was so promising, then they started doing too much. I'm not really into sci-fi shows to begin with but the first episode was really good! I liked it before they introduced the giant thing she could talk to. The first 3 episodes had me hooked then I kinda lost track of the storyline. The actors are great so I will return for season two. Halan and Harmony are my favorites, they really bring the show to life. I just hope the writers don't get too crazy this time around. Develop 1-2 stories at a time or return back to the original plot of it being a lighthouse where people drop in from time to time.

Why pretend this show is based on a book of the same name?
glenster111116 November 2023
Why do these production companies do this?? They buy the rights to a wonderfully written, subtle, cerebral, quirky, humorous book, and then proceed to write and produce a show that has NOTHING to do with it except that it takes place in a "space lighthouse"? Seriously???

I'm not saying that every show or movie should be a verbatim copy of the written version, but vaguely CLOSE might be nice. And if you're going to depart from the book so completely, and so immediately, then at least make it unique! Or coherent! Or with stunning visuals! Or fascinating dialog!

This felt like bad low budget stuff from the 80s. Good grief! I couldn't even go for the 2nd episode, I was so disappointed. 😕😔

Once again, every bad SF trope, just with a budget
shoobe01-114 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Good production design, everything intentional is in focus, some good actors. And that's it. What have we done to anger the gods of good SF to get so many shows like this:

  • A new element
  • Gears control electricity
  • Future power sources explode catastrophically
  • Mercenary team
  • Everyone on the mercenary team has a distinctive hair style
  • Everyone on the mercenary team hates each other
  • Transparent displays
  • Gravity... but sometimes not
  • Hacking!

  • Give away the action in the cold open
  • Everyone is a jerkass
  • Space is small

I mean, lighthouse and victorian mansion in a storm (maybe bonus: the bridge is washed out) are the classic isolation for drama or monsters, so spaceship in space (or mining colony etc) is the modern version. Lighthouse in space needs to go above and beyond not to be just tropes upon tropes.

What really annoys me about this and much other bad SF is the lack of world building. We didn't get 2 minutes of just how the place works, even if not explicitly explained, before it goes straight to acton and conflict so we're not oriented to these truths, and instead everything that happens with future stuff seems like it's a macguffin.
