Well done
spmact27 October 2018
I don't know much about the Constantine character apart from the old Keanu Reeves movie which I saw a long time ago (and liked) and an appearance in Justice League Dark. I never watched the TV show or animated series.

Having said that, I thought this movie was good. It is adult themed, which fits the story, and apart from one odd way of sharing memories between Constantine and another character, I don't think the adult nature was over done.

It was well paced, had interesting characters and stakes, and surprisingly carried emotional weight at the end and showed what a toll this life takes on the titular character.

All in all, I was impressed. DC continues its record of well made animated features.

Good comic book movie and good example what's been missing.
FilmChamp209 August 2020
This is a great movie for people who grew up loving superheroes/comic book characters and learned a lot about life from them. Where the story was about about defeating an evil, learning that the strongest of us can overcome the dark, and gives an important moral message of how far love and friendship in life can go. Shows the burden of the hero and the sacrifices they make in order to make the world a better place, even if it means it won't be for them.

I may be too sentimental or dramatic, but it's been a long time since a comicbook movie made me feel good and the message received at the end of it, was a reminder of why I fell in love with comics and their characters in the first place. No political message. No hidden agenda being masked behind loved characters. Just a movie about John Constantine and how he makes the world safer without wanting recognition for it. A good man at heart and one who battles more of his own demons, than the true ones he sends to hell.

It's got the action, the mystery, the humor, the drama, and positive message missing from so many movies today. Hopefully for more movies like this in the future.

Constantine is back!!
mattd-120027 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Constantine: City of Demons (2018)

Director: Doug Murphy (Mighty Ducks the Movie)

John Constantine is visited by his childhood friend Chas Chandler, who desperately needs his help. Chas's daughter, Trish, is in a coma induced by a very powerful demon who is slowly feasting on her soul. They journey to Los Angeles to hunt down the demon but become tasked with killing five more along the way. They receive help from a few friends and enemies to save Trish and prevent the destruction of California.

Matt Ryan reprises his role as Constantine in this very dark and gory animated film from DC. I watched the majority of the Constantine show on CW and thought it was pretty decent. I enjoyed Matt Ryan's performance and that carried over with this film. It's been a while since I've sat and watched an animated film for the DCU and this was a great way to get back into them. This is by far the bloodiest and most demonic animated title they put out this far and I say the more the better. The film worked so well as an animated film that it had me thinking what would happen if it was live-action. I won't get ahead of myself but I will say I'm a fan of any Constantine movie if they keep up this formula. It's a mature and horrifying film that should satisfy the majority of fans and I would highly suggest giving it a watch. If you haven't given any of the animated films from DC a chance I suggest you start because they are far better than the live-action theatrical releases we've been getting.

I give this film 7.5/10

Most faithful adaption of Constantine yet
JMichaletos25 May 2019
That's a mini review about the movie, not the tv show (even if the show is part of the movie). I watched the film yesterday which contained the first 5 episodes of the animated show and took them further into a full, completed story.

I don't blame people who didn't like the show since the episodes were ridiculously short (only 5 minutes each) but the film is a different story. Matt Ryan shines once again as Constantine with good support from the rest of the cast. The story is probably the darkest story I've seen in an animated film and there are many shocking scenes and surprises. As I mentioned in the title, this is undoubtedly the best adaption of John Constantine. The character is actually a damaged character, haunted from his past, trying to find some purpose in life (at least that's how the original Hellblazer presented him to us) and the film captures that perfectly.

I liked the live action series, I loved the Justice League Dark film but City of Demons goes even deeper and gives us the darkest and more mature animated film/series in the DC Universe. Highly recommended.

Quite good...
paul_haakonsen7 August 2023
I am not particularly familiar with the Constantine character, as I never got into the comic books. But as I happened to stumble upon this 2018 animated movie, of course I opted to sit down and watch it.

Writer J. M. DeMatteis actually put together a rather good and interesting script and storyline for director Doug Murphy to bring to the screen. I have to admit that I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 90 minutes that the movie ran for. It was a dark and violent storyline, so this is hardly suitable for a younger audience.

With "Constantine: City of Demons" being an animated movie, of course having a good voice acting cast ensemble is important. And they definitely had that here. I didn't recognize any of the voices initially, but it was nice to see the names of Kevin Michael Richardson and Robin Atkin Downes on the cast list, as I perused IMDb to check who voiced the various characters.

Visually then I will say that the art style used in "Constantine: City of Demons" was good. It was a very fitting drawing and art style used for the animated movie, and it complimented the atmosphere of the dark storyline quite nicely. Plus, the animation itself was also quite good.

Without being very familiar with the John Constantine character, I will admit that "Constantine: City of Demons" proved to be an entertaining watch nonetheless.

My rating of "Constantine: City of Demons" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

Do yourself a favour mate and watch this movie over the mini series.
WeAreLive31 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have just watched this movie and I enjoyed it.

If you watched the the mini series this movie adapts on too it and goes further on with the story.

Animation wise it is definitely high quality.

It is funny that Damian O Hare the voice of John Constantine is work with Matt Ryan the true John Constantine actor. With the great recurring voice talents Laura Bailey as Ash the Heeler and Emily O'Brien as Chas Chandler's wife makes it even. The rest of the voice cast was good.

If you want explore more about John Constantine and his life then this series is worth the watch. I would highly recommend this movie and on that note this movie is not for children.

See also Freedom Fighters the Ray and Vixen for more animated DC projects from the CW network.

And another reason to hate him
Sh31kh_H0kv527 August 2021
Good Griff this just keeps getting better and better, just with every intro of John comes chaos, and people suffer cause of him.

That's just another deadass reason his sole existence is all about.

But I guess I enjoyed my self.

Constantine is always great
aadityaprakash0714312 February 2019
This movie gripped me whole time. Best part is twist in last minutes. It was great, now just plain action. At last Matt Ryan is always best suited in John's character. I wish WB will continue to re-live this horror-thriller genere in future also. Love from an Indian.

Hey

November 25th 2023

Soild hour and a few minutes

Suitable for children:

No. Children could not handle some of the scenes. Very graphic for them maybe.

The story and the production overview:

Interesting piece of work. It's like a hand knit quilt.

Constantine is Back!
killazak5032 January 2021
City of Demons was very good! With that said, the horror story theme really made the movie extremely interesting, along with great story telling. DC and WB did a great job with this movie and the character of Constantine! We are all are begging for more!

Providing a paranormal experience
Mysterygeneration20 March 2024
The 2018 R-rated animated film Constantine: City of Demons - The Movie, or just Constantine: City of Demons, is based on the DC character John Constantine. This is a synopsis of the film:

The occult detective John Constantine is plagued by an old error. In an attempt to preserve his friend's daughter's soul, Constantine returns to the realm of demons and black magic after she enters an enigmatic coma. Along the journey, he meets a variety of people, such as an angel, an enigmatic nurse, and even an Aztec god.

Critics gave the film positive reviews overall, praising the eerie and moody images, the voice acting (especially Matt Ryan's return to his role from the live-action Constantine series), and the fidelity to the original work. The plot could occasionally be predictable, according to certain assessments.

Some viewers may find the plot formulaic, and not all audiences may be appropriate for R-rated content.

Good stuff ! Need more
varunmirasdar7 May 2020
It's really one the best outing for Constantine ! Superb animation a bit over the top gore but really like how his character is shaping up. And it looks promising too, he shaping up to be an important character in the larger scheme of things. Looking forward for more movies on him and would like Zatanna with him too and her own movie of course.

Outstanding
ashfordofficial20 June 2022
The twelfth entry in the DC Animated Movie Universe and the 34th overall entry in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Originally premiered as a web series and later released as a feature-length film on DVD and Blu-ray.

A much darker tone than the rest of the films. Solid animation, outstanding voice cast, fantastic direction and a well written engaging screenplay.

What a movie. Amazing. Masterpiece. A very powerful movie. Great story. With great characters. Especially John Constantine and Asa. John Constantine I hope to see him soon at DCEU. A very fun movie. And an unspeakable visual masterpiece. The plot was good.

Thanks DC.

One simply just can't hate John Constantine
darapjohnson11 July 2023
I have said this already in one of my other reviews but i'll gladly say it again... John Constantine is such a well-made character in all aspects, even his damn british accent fits so well. What this guy lacks in power, he more than makes up for in brains.

Anyways, enough about the character, let's get into the movie. "Constantine: City of Demons" evolves around John Constantine and his best friend Chas who are on a mission to save Chas's daughter, Trish from a demon. They run into lots of trouble underway. It's a fun premise and executed brilliantly. I loved especially the goryness of it all, especially the hell scene, that was creepy in its own right. Definitely recommended.

Great for Halloween
torgis14 September 2021
I got a solid Halloween vibe throughout the movie, but I'm not complaining. There were some strange or awkward scenes, but overall still an interesting movie.

I will always love Matt Ryan as Constantine.

Painfully average Constantine.
thisseatofmars20 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Constantine is a hard-rocking, chain-smoking dude who drinks a lot and has a lot of random sex. Constantine's like a less psychopathic James Bond, British accent included, except that he fights the occult. That's why adapting Constantine is challenging; it's hard to connote the grit of the Constantine universe, even in comic book form. This cartoon does not adapt Constantine well, and its attempts at grit and horror are equal parts painful and laughable.

The movie feels like it written by people who have read maybe two Constantine comics and instead watch a lot of Oprah (or something). There is nothing gripping about the scenes where Constantine has to witness the tortures of Hell (whip stock sound effect) has sex with a spirit (not as cool as it sounds) or his repeated flashbacks to that tragic night long ago (lady scream stock sound effect, which is also very, very annoying).

The animation is stiff and the characters, especially the demons, look stupid. Constantine's design would work as, I don't know, an action figure maybe, but he is not expressive. Always the eyebrows drawn together in a tough-looking scowl. But guys, tough is boring.

The way the characters talk to one another is stiff as well. Early on, Constantine summons "Nightmare Nurse," someone Constantine used to work with, and within the first 30 seconds she's talking about how Constantine is not great in bed. (This paragraph is going to make me tick the spoiler box for this review. Jeez.) I guess they're trying to show how mundane fighting the occult has become for them, but that could be communicated a lot more subtly, like Hellboy cracking jokes in the presence of elder gods. Even in a realistic setting, if you ran into an old flame, would she bring up the sex you used to have? Does *anyone* talk like that? Bringing up sexual performance in the first 30 seconds? After years of silence? There's that hamfisted attempt at grit, yet again. Constantine: a swing and a miss.

Is it completely horrible? No, but it's certainly a waste of time. I was busy with something in my home and put on this movie as background noise, but despite my productivity I still feel guilty, like I still wasted my time and energy with this movie.

Awesome!
LuisPunisher24 December 2021
This movie is amazing, or as John would say, bloody amazing! I loved the tv series, but i would say that this is even better. So far, this is the best Constantine adaptation that i have watched.

The movie is pretty brutal, full of gore and amazing art direction, and it has Matt Ryan back as Constantine. I loved the movie with Keanu, but i have to say that Matt is the best Constantine.

The movie answers some questions from the tv series, and it's a non stop action fest all the way.

Constantine est très super que toujours
Puroo17 June 2021

At The Bottom of My DC Animated Movie Rankings.
koltonbrett4 January 2022
DC fans typically like that DC is darker than Marvel, but this is dark on a whole other level. I think most people would agree that it is a bit much. The violence and gore is extreme and even disturbing at times. The material was too dark and depraved to be enjoyed by me, but even the story was not all that interesting. I was quite bored and due to the unpleasant nature of this movie, it is the only DC animated movie that I started and didn't watch 100% of. I was ready to move on from the demonic and get back to superheroes vs supervillains.

A great Constantine animated movie
guisreis25 April 2024
Constantine: City of Demons is a violent, gory and very atmospheric horror and adventure fantasy adult animated film. The movie is full of interesting characters (mostly demons) besides John Constantine. I loved particularly Nightmare Nurse and Angela! There is some dark humor, but also a lot of pure good-quality horror, with several remarkable situations, places and creatures. It is an animated DC Comics movie that engages spectator throughout the story, until the bright ending. The portrayal of Los Angeles was very innovative. Good script and nice animation constitute a formidable combination.

The best adaptation of Constantine so far
qsknphqyc8 February 2024
When I first watch it I don't enjoy it very much since I'm not used to this much violence in DCAU film (In that times) but after I watch Justice League Dark : Apokolyps war and I rewatch this flim, I have to admit that there's a lot I missed out.

First..this movie really did Constantine right if you actually know about him more now. This movie portrays his backstory so well, as much as his character and his mental mindset. He is the Constantine I want to see, it's like he jumps out of the comics, his accent and his power..including his fighting style. I like the way he defeated the main villain, I like the way how story ends. It's dark, it's mysterious as it should be.

The atmosphere is on point, the dialogue is great. The action maybe not that sparked since his fighting style is all about witty and con but overall it gives us excitement.

It should be more Constantine animation in this style. I love Matt Ryan as his voice actor and I love this animation styles. It's classic, it's dark and mature. I really want more of this.

Really Good. The Demons Were Truly Evil
jiszmo-1319017 May 2023
I was not that familiar with Constantine, before this. I do slightly remember a somewhat boring movie with Keanu Reeves. I was pleasantly surprised by this though.

The film follows a magic user, John Constantine. He has to rescue the soul of his friend's daughter, who is in a coma, with her soul captured by demons. That's the basic plot. There are a few subplots too, that he has to do, in order to accomplish the basic plot.

The film is very adult. There is sex, nudity, tons of horrific murder and gore. The demons in this are the stand out part. Their world and parties, are insane. The one demon has a swimming pool full of dead bodies, that he swims in. In some ways it's reminiscent of Clive Barker's depictions of demons.

Anyways, a bunch of stuff happens. There are alot of cool secondary characters, particularly the females.

I strongly recommend it for anyone who hasn't seen it. It isn't super hero, at all. It's basically an animated horror series. I wish there were more Constantine animated films. There are a couple of Justice League films with Constantine in them. I've seen Justice League Dark, which has a heavy focus on Constantine, and is decent. It isn't the same level as this one though.
