Awesome, if a little fanficcy

Warning: Spoilers
Let me preface this by saying MLP FIM is one of my favourite shows of all time, right up there with Avatar The Last Airbender and Once Upon A Time. However, as much of a fan as I am, even I can no longer deny that I feel like the show's been going a bit downhill for a while. I do like season 8 overall, but I think it's one of the weakest. Also, this is a review for both parts.

Now that's out of the way, onto the review! So, as you can probably guess from the rating and headline, I think this was a great premier. But it certainly wasn't without its flaws. All the premiers have felt like this for the past few seasons, and it's hard to explain, but everything feels a little unprofessional. Some of the lines feel unnatural and certain scenarios are a bit out there. Also, a lot of stuff in the beginning and end felt a little rushed. That's a big reason this isn't my favourite premier. The set up towards it and the climax itself wasn't as satisfying as some of the other ones. Like the one this episode's main villain was first in, the crystal empire. Everything was really well paced and tense throughout. Also, I think Sombra was a weaker villain here than in his episode. His whole concept basically got changed around from an imposing force/presence to a typical in-your-face bad guy. And I'm not that big a fan of his new voice. I really don't think it fits him. However, he is sometimes amusing with how much of an in your face, typical villain he is. He's almost comedic, but it's played straight, which makes it even better.

However, this doesn't mean I don't love this premier. Cause I do. I was so hyped when all the old villains joined together initially. Also, Twilight taking over the kingdom seems like a logical next step. And Twilight's "Twilighting" was hilarious throughout. Speaking of hilariousity, Discord had a really strong performance in this episode. I liked him stepping back and letting The Mane 6 handle things, and I really liked him faking his injuries to boost their confidence (which, in theory, seems counter-intuitive, but it worked). Though, I'm a bit curious about the one moment when he looked remorseful when Twilight said they couldn't do anything without him. It could just be him wanting Twilight to be able to do things on her own, but I feel it could be something else. Hmmm...Moving on, I think all the characters were also handled well, from the Mane 6 dealing with Twilight like it was nothing, to Starlight not saving the day for once, Celestia and Luna actually helping, Starswirl being supportive and awesome, Cozy being her usual over-the-top cutesy self (which is why I love/hate her), Tirek and Chrysalis having some great banter, and Grogar promising to be an interesting villain, the character work here was really impressive. Also, this is kinda a weird thing to bring up in an episode with no song, but I really liked the music in this episode, especially the tracks with Sombra.

So overall, even though this episode had quite a few problems, most notably the fanficcy feel and Sombra becoming a worse villain, the positives more than made up for it, and I think this one of the best premiers, and a great way to start the final season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.

One last time

Well, here it is everybody, the final season of "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic", one of the most popular things that we as humans have ever created. Here we get to see a new villain called Grogar summon the other My Little Pony villains. We get King Sombra, Queen Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Heart gathered together. What's great is that everybody stays in character. King Sombra wants to go back and conquer the Crystal Empire on his own. He actually does seem to do that!

I just love how fast paced everything is in this episode! There's also the other plot about Princess Celestia and Princess Luna giving up their ruling title to Twilight and her friends. I would like to see if they inherit their powers too. The animation is probably the best it's ever been at. Only appropriate for the final season. Thanks for the memories! ****

A very promising beginning
TheLittleSongbird3 January 2022
Seasons 1-5 had their misfires, but their best episodes were some of the best of the whole of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. Season 6 was very inconsistent, with a good deal of average or less episodes and no masterpieces (though some great episodes as well). Season 7 was an improvement, with the least number of misfires (only one was below average) and two of the show's best. Season 8 was every bit as uneven as 6, with sporadic great episodes but also too many real low points.

"The Beginning of the End Part 1" was watched with quite high expectations, considering that Season 9 was 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's' final season. Was really hoping that it would be a breath of fresh air after being generally disappointed with the previous season and also on the whole the show had a decent track record with their season openers (less so finales). Luckily, "The Beginning of the End Part 1" turned out to be great, a very promising start for Season 9 and one of the better episodes of the season (which actually could have been better than it turned out, but generally an improvement on the previous).

Not an awful lot wrong, though some of it is familiar ground and some of the pace early on could have been tighter.

On the other hand, there are so many brilliant things in "The Beginning of the End Part 1". The animation went from strength to strength with each season and it is excellent here. The colours are vibrant and atmospheric and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is so rich and varied. One is very immersed in this vividly rendered world, built up beautifully. The music once again is dynamic, with a lot of character and also in good keeping with the tone. Sombra's music agreed really stands out. The voice acting is without complaint all round.

Really liked the Mane 6 and how all served a purpose, even if other episodes do better at fleshing their personalities out, while still being likeable and in character. Discord would be even better in the second part, but after being messed up so badly in the previous season's "A Matter of Principals" he is thankfully back to the funny Discord any fans of his know and love. Celestia and Luna are more than just there plot devices, but it's the villains that make the biggest impression. Grogar is suitably sinister, but Sombra makes the biggest impression. He has personality and is both entertaining and formidable, this time the interesting villain that he should have been but wasn't in his introductory episode Season 3's "The Crystal Empire" two parter.

Writing always intrigues and has entertainment value and emotional investment. The story is nearly always involving, despite starting a little slow, and doesn't feel like there is too much going on or like the episode was trying to cram in too much.

In conclusion, great and promising start to the final season. 9/10.
